There was a good article a couple of days ago that made the point that whilst Davies may not be as good, and not as much of an attacking threat, his place in team doesn't leave our left hand side exposed. It said verts seems a lot more comfortable and has better games when rose isn't sat mainly in the final third.

Can't say I noticed the difference in Vert's performances.
What I would say is that we were conceding just as many goals when Davies was preferred to Rose at the start of the season and during the Europa games Davies played. No doubt though that some will see the clean sheet today with Davies starting and use that as the confirmation they need that Davies is better than Rose.
If the truth be known neither Davies or Rose is good enough for where we want to be IMO
Don't know if I'd say that grand. Rose has been very good for us this season overall. We want to be a top 4 team right? I think we'd make top 4 with him playing a large part in that.
Asking any more of us than simply a top 4 team, and his quality may be questionable, but one step at a time.
Rose has been very good for us this season overall.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Defensively I think he is dreadful so I cannot agree.
Yes he works hard but he makes so many basic mistakes its like watching an under 11 play. How many ridiculous free kicks does he give away when there is no need whatsoever? How many times does he let a player turn and face him instead of staying tight to prevent the player turning and getting at him? How often does he get forward when we do not have good possesion and then cant get back when our move breaks down?
Thats just a few of his problems without his tendency to give away the odd penalty or needless free kick.
I dont grade players by the odd good thing they do I pay great attention to what they do wrong and Rose does far to much wrong to be considered a good fullback.
The only thing I will say in his defence is that its not unusual for him to get no cover in front of him but not good enough in my eyes and I would argue that the majority of goals we conceed Rose contributes to the goal one way or another
Agree to disagree then. I think you're being incredibly harsh and make him sound like Alan Hutton. He's certainly better going forward than he is defensively, and offers more than Davies. Even defensively he does good well a lot of the time, but is always prone to the odd mistake. I do feel like some of his critics focus on the latter more than when he makes great covering tackles, or blocks.
Do you think he's at least an upgrade on Benny?
I think you're being incredibly harsh and make him sound like Alan Hutton
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am often surprised when people say things like that lol.
If I was unlucky enough to be driving a FIAT 500 my defence would not be its better than the Lada I used to have
Hutton was dreadful and yes Rose is better than him but that does not make him good enough. IMO Walker is not much better but his pace gets him out of trouble most of the time.
Both of them are poor when it comes to crossing a ball and neither is particularly great at their defensive side of the game how on earth can they be anything other than average under those circumstances
And yes I know some bright person will remind me that Walker made a good cross for one of the goals today but that does not make me forget the other 500 crosses from both our full backs that were pure and total crap.
IMO for every good thing Rose does he does 3 bad things and thats not a good average for somebody who plays football for a living.
I dont know what you do for a living but if you had a success rate of 1 in 3 your boss would hardly cry when you decided to move on in life and thats exactly how I feel about Rose.
As for his blocks and tackles most of them are because he let his player get away in the first place.
We lost against Newcastle last week and how did the winning goal come about? Oh I remember yet another needless free kick given away by Rose for handball.
Look back at our games and take note of how many of the goals we conceed come from our left back position then try again to convince me that he is a good player.
As for Benny I dont actually see that much difference between the two to be honest he might be a slight upgrade but it is only very slight.

I'm with Grand on Rose, he is not a good defender, ok going forward, but he gives away far too many needless free kicks. Davies may not be the best, but I rate him better than Rose.

All this talk of who is better Rose or Davies will go on and on and different people have their own ideals in a player.
For me the defence isn't a problem, (joint second best in the league) and we conceded on average less than one a game. We haven't had a defence collectively as good as this in the 28 years i have followed Spurs.
I still believe its the other end, not taking our chances and putting other teams to bed when we are dominating.
We gave ourselves a reasonably comfortable lead by quickly going for the kill when we went one nil up today.
Against Newcastle we sat back and didn't take control and Newcastle smelled blood.
We have scored 3 or more about four times this season which has helped our goals for count considerably. In the other games we have struggled to score more than one.

What team will be:
Lloris
Walker Toby Vert Rose
Dier Alli
Lamela Dembele Eriksen
Kane
-----------------------
Without getting in a Lamela discussion has Eriksen ever played of the right wing?
Surely in your team Eriksen & Son should swap sides?
=======================
Why even mention Lamela, he isn't the only player ommited from my starting XI?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes he is?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You do realise our squad is bigger than 12 don't you?
Anyway, good result today. The first 20 mins looked tricky but we looked ok from when we scored. We still looked weak in 1 or 2 positions but it's no point talking about them because some players will never be dropped regardless of form.
A much needed 3 points. Onwards and upwards.
Agree re Rose & Walker, both have been improved a bit under Poch but I've been saying for a while that the fullback position is out weakest. Was hoping the signings of Davies & Trippier would usher in a new era but not to be.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree totally with this and whether our goals against stat is good or bad thats not always a reflection points lost from winning positions is also extremely important.
The system MP plays relies heavily on the full backs supporting the midfield/attack by bombing on. One of our biggest problems is that neither Walker or Rose has a brain and they rarely make the correct decision on when to go or stay. Rose is definitely more at fault than Walker on this. Both of them rush into the back of players giving needless free kicks away. Neither of them gets tight enough they just rely on their pace to get them out of trouble and this is ok if you are facing an average player but its costly when you are facing a good player.
Maybe I'm missing something here. I've thought Rose has been solid this season. Had a poor first game in Europa, and his last game was mixed. Other than that he's done well. Both full backs have for the most part. And as Dont cry says, the defence as a whole has been as good as it ever has. I'm not seeing this constant mistake-prone full back that is being mentioned.
Benny was good as well, but could be far too casual at times. We got to top 4 twice in 2 years and reached the CL QF while Benny was playing. In terms of where we want Spurs to be at short term, that's it isn't it? That's why I bring him up in comparison with Rose, who I actually think is performing better, though not by great distance.
Also not sure I agree that Corluka is any better than Walker, as much as I like Corluka. Is it not nostalgia talking with Corluka? We used to love his link up play with Lennon and the fact he was part of a successful Croatian contingent, but was he always so solid defensively?
Didn't see the game yesterday but caught the highlights.
I see some claiming Davies brought stability, but we were under pressure early doors and Saints had two good sniffs....
Once was when Davies got too easily hustled off the ball just shy of halfway and left on his aris, Verts got drawn out to close down Davies space, and when the ball got played in behind Toby had to make a last ditch tackle.
The other one was Davies switching off and not tracking Mane's run when the ball got played across the D.
If you aunt had knackers and all that, luckily they didn't end up in goals. But that was two defensively poor bits of play, when he is supposed to be the dependable defender of the pair
I think Rose and especially Walker annoy a lot of us at times
However, I do feel fullback is a demanding a position now, especially in our system, than it ever has been
You wouldn't be able to name many better fullbacks who aren't already at a bigger club

I'm afraid so.
I just see him as such a weak link - it does my nut in how much he plays, and how many chances he gets. And it can’t just be me as I read the morning papers just to give myself peace of mind that I’m not missing anything or being unjustly biased, and the last 2 games he was rated 5/10 and 6/10 respectively – being the lowest rated player in the match day squad - so it cant just be me who sees it this way.
