Yes we were poor in the first half but I can't remember a time where we played so well like we did in that second half.
***************************
Against a team sitting on a lead, this is not special. Every attack they had they could have scored if they made an effort.
And if you want pass and move like today? how about 3 days ago? or this time last season. Nothing special if the right players are used.
funrob - Carrickschin (U9808)
It is a sad day because not one of the players was up for the game in the first half, not a single one even after going 2-0 down.
It has been happening throughout the season, Fulham got a lead, Southampton the same, Liverpool the same.
The players only get motivated once we are losing, where is the Man Utd tradition. I have seen us get beat by very ordinary teams at OT but more often than not they deserved to beat us that day, either they played out of their skins, or had gr8 quality or were simply lucky.
Spurs won because we were sleeping.
I wonder if we still had someone like Keano he would have battered the other 10 at half time.
I don't even mind this defeat so much. It is the manner of the defeat and the manner of our last six games.
Make no mistake, Southampton, Fulham and definitely Liverpool could have and should have beaten us, if they had more belief. Yes, prior to this game, we had been getting positive outcomes but the performances indicated our luck won't last.
I said it a while back that we were bound to be found out when a decent team with belief played us and i was right.
And wtf has happened to our defence?
funrob. I told you so. Everything I said yesterday was correct. You were wrong.
Anderson and Cleverley have both the energy and the quality to win midfield battles against teams like Spurs yet they sit on the bench and watch Scholes and Carrick get over-run, it's ridiculous.
Spurs sat off and allowed United to dominate, had they continued to be positive Scholes and Carrick would have continued to struggle.
Kagawa
Fair enough, Giggs was poor but so were plenty of the other players. Not one player showed up and to blame it on Giggs and Scholes alone is wrong.
What are your feelings on Scholes? I know Tomatoes wants him to retire but we do not have a player in the squad (or Premier League) who can pass a ball like that.
For everyone saying Spurs sat back and ALLOWED us to dominate then you are so very wrong it's laughable.
We forced them back. There's no choice in it. What about when Spurs scored their third goal. If it was just so easy to CHOOSE to get off the back foot then they would have done it. The fact is we should have had a couple of penalties and could easily have scored 3 or 4 more in that second half but once again Friedel played amazingly against us.
Giggs should retire before January and Scholes should retire at the end of the season.
We should move on and not get mired in the sentimental past. Yes, SAT-NAV Scholes still has some ability but at what cost?
My feelings are the same. When under pressure like the first half he's utter gash. When he's got time on the ball he's brilliant. This is all obvious and should not be forgotten just because he made some pretty passes against a team defending the league. I love Scholes. He is my favourite ever footballer. But I'm also realistic.
funrob
It's mental, Spurs choked and started lumping aimless balls instead of trying to play their way forward, Scholes and Carrick did improve but Spurs choked.
Kagawa
It wasn't just pretty passes. He didn't give (other than a tired pass or two) a sniff to anyone around him be they Dembele or anyone else.
Our first half would have been a hell of a lot better had we actually had some movement up front.
Red Con
Scholes should keep playing as long as he has the legs. You talk about the sentimental past but today he played as well as anyone in the league.
Maybe he should be a great impact sub but in no way was our loss down to him.
It was 3 reasons.
1) Rio having a poor game.
2) Poor finishing in the second half.
3) The ref deciding to deny us a penalty no matter how strong the claim.
funrob, i am not laying the blame at Satnav Scholes' feet, i am blaming SAF.
Scholes was allowed to run the show because Tottenham were 2-0 up, sat back and we were playing at home.
I reiterate Giggs should retire asap and Scholes should follow suit at the end of the season. No ifs or buts.
Red
It's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. Did Spurs sit back or did Scholes and Rooney force them back?
Giggs can easily do well for us as a sub till the end of the season (when I feel he will retire) but in no way should Scholes retire if he has that kind of game inside him. He's already come on as a sub and helped us win twice this season so without a shadow of a doubt he should stay in the squad for as long as he has that talent.
Giggs was not so bad that he needs to retire tomorrow FFS!
I reiterate Giggs should retire asap and Scholes should follow suit at the end of the season. No ifs or buts.
--------------------------------------------
Sadly I agree, the team has to move on and whilst they're available for selection it seems Sir Alex will continue to use them when he shouldn't.
Fergie should of retired giggs years ago.
Scholes passing doesn't make up for the deficiencies in his game any more either.
What deficiencies Stretty?
I'd say that all the weaknesses he had before are the ones he has now, but with a slightly less mobile team around him.
His biggest strength was his passing and he still has it. Today was his best performance in a long time and when we needed it most. Sadly for him our finishing was poor.
Scholes passing is absolutely ineffective. Only the nostalgics see something valuable in those long passes. The fact is they lead nowhere.
Scholes weaknesses: lack of pace, lack of strength, poor movement, fitness, tackling
Of all his strenghts, only his passing ability is still there. His late runs into the box are a rarity these days, he merely surges past the centre line, ic ould go on...
He is slow and unfit on a regular basis. Doesn't offer an overly defensive or attacking threat.
By and large he is poor.

I hope people do not get carried away a lot by the second half performance.
It was clear that Spurs were just scared of losing goals and were defending deep, it was more the circumstances of the match rather than our midfield that dominated spurs in the second half.
_____________
I totally agree. There was nothing special about that second half performance and I thought we were poor in the last 20 min. That second half performance should be the minimum we expect, not praised as if it was somethign to be chuffed about. Spur sat back and defended well and we had no idea how to break them down. I've never seen so many sideways passes when we desperately needed a goal or two.
Spurs were not dominated at all. They sat back and defended their lead well - like they should have done in previous games against us. They weren't even interested in hitting us on the break as long as they were winning.
And blaming Rio isn't right either imo. No CB could handle Bale's pace. FFS most FBs can't either. Where was our midfield when he was allowed to run at the CBs?And the first goal was more down to Evans imo. I'm not saying Rio played well but he should no way be singled out. Carrick was poor, Nani was worse, Giggs anonymous and Scholes played well for 30 min.
For all this dominating we supposedly did, what did Friedel have to do?
RedMisty
Friedel made 3 good saves in the second half.
So we made him work.
Do you honestly think we deserved to lose that match?
Yes. By miles.
It was a crap performance and selection.
