Good article, but the guy drives me crazy. He needs a boot up the behind.

My favourite Gervinho moments are when he bundles into an entire thicket of defenders, who surround him. He then emerges, ball still at his feet, leaving them looking very bewildered. He manages this not by circus trickery, multiple stepovers and the like, but by totally random and unpredictable movements. Houdiniesque wriggling. Then, rather than pass to a well-positioned team-mate he takes a wild slash at the goal which usually results in injured spectators.

I pee'd a little at "houdiniesque wriggling, wild slash and injured spectators"

I know exactly what you mean, AFL, and if I were a team-mate I would want to throttle him several times in every match.
BUT... if he can somehow get those contact lenses, and learn to play with more composed team-mates, not be such a loose cannon - he will be someone that opponents have good reason to fear.
As it is, it's mainly us that get afraid every time he gets the ball.

The only other consideration is that Gervinho has a highly developed sense of smell - for the ball, and to a lesser extent for the goal netting. His tactics consist of putting those two elements together - and that's it. Find the ball, put it in the net.
So all those hours, days and weeks of complicated diagrams, practice of set pieces, instructional videos, role plays etc are all wasted on him. It's quite probable that, like the genius or the dunce, he is not required to attend. At least, that seems the case judging by his performances on the pitch.
But once Wenger drives him down to Specsavers - then it will be time for another statue outside the Emirates.
