Perth is a wonderful city. There's a big ex-pat community if that's your thing. There's any amount of pubs, restaurants and a lively club/music/band scene. The people are extremely friendly. I found it a much more pleasant city to live in than Sydney. Get yourself down to the beach, take in a bit of Aussie Rules or get down to Freemantle. You'll have a ball. They are a very laid back folk there I thought.
Like any other city it has expensive/cheaper areas. I wouldn't class it as expensive as London. I was back for a trip in January and you can have a really good meal for 20-25 quid PP and 3 quid for a pint
if that was for me, we have the emirate cup here too but its a horse race
========
It was actually for abu (would've been so patronising otherwise).
Watch out for all the mossies, and deadly spiders, and deadly snakes, and giant crocs, and don't swim in the sea with all the deadly sharks, and those dingo's give a nasty bite, other than that have a nice time, just be careful of the heat and tropical diseases.
I was in construction when I was out there, far different to what it is in the uk. I imagine if you're working alongside oil and gas you'll be working out of Perth in the north of the state? Fair play on getting the job, it's something I contemplated before I came back to the uk, plan on returning to live and work in Perth
"Oil and Gas is booming out there just now."
Is that not a little dangerous?
One of my favourite things about Australia was watching the football. They show 3 Premier League games each Saturday so you'd go to a bar at about 11 at night and stay there until about 7 in the morning watching football.
Although in Perth I think the time difference would make the hours a little less unsociable.
Abu make sure you keep an eye out for any dodgy vehicle repair men!

I live in Aberdeen - A dodgy vehicle repair man would be a welcome change
Wolf Creek was a nasty business.
Nasty I tell you.
Last chance
sounds like it's got a bit cheaper, when I was out I was paying 12 dollars for a jd and coke in all places I went. Prefer it to Sydney, although Sydney is fantastic and it's nice with the Missus having family out there. As you say great people, freemantle is lovely, and if you get the chance head up to hillarys boat harbour on a Friday mid afternoon and have a few drinks in the breakwater. Hands down my favourite pub that I've ever been too

Yeah it is out of Perth. Not 100% sure if it is in the north of it or not. I'll go get the address see if you can tell me. I put my CV on a couple of websites just because and then got four responses in 2 days. They are screaming for people.
I know, and the salaries are monstrous. If it's the oil and gas business then most likely it's in the north of WA. Usually about 4 hour flight from Perth in most cases. I take it you're doing shift work, something like 2 weeks on and 1 off? What site did you put your cv on?

I told you to be serious

No i'll be running the show from the "beach" as we call it in Aberdeen. I'll only need to step foot on a rig/site about once a month. Hudson and they sent it through to their Perth office.
the Salary is good. I probably could have earned more going to Baku on a 6away 2 at home rota due to no tax but i've been there and done it. Never done Oz.

Like anywhere, it depends on where you go. We hit a good few of the Irish Bars and found it relatively affordable. If you're heading in the direction of the harbour then the prices were going up as fast as my blood pressure
Just do what all the backpackers do. Buy 4 litres of wine for $10 and get wrecked.

You spelt work shy students wrong
That sounds like a good deal mate, as last chance has said, Perth is a fantastic place. Is it a permanent postion or are you out there until the contract is finished?
Last chance
yeah I know what you mean, the house prices along the Coastal road are phenomenal, lucky to find one sub £10mil. I really think Perth is the place to be of you want to make some serious money!
"You spelt work shy students wrong"
Hey! When I was a backpacker I was a work shy ex-student thank you very much.
Although I'm not sure we can be to harsh on the work shy in that we spend all our days on here?
@The class behind van persies glass (ankles) (U8678) -
Definately. It's still somewhere I'd like to live again. If you are in the right line of work and get an opportunity, grab it with both hands. I was working there 12-13 years ago and was earning in a month what some of my mates were earning in a year in the UK
I'm in the wrong line of work. I earn sod all and have no prospects. Anyone want to offer me a job?
I kno, I was purely labouring when I was out there, and doing a bit of electrics and I was getting the equivilant of £16 an hour, over double uk rates. Gotta work on tw girlfriend that Perth would be the better option to Sydney!
I was over in January seeing a Dutch mate of mine. He has now his own electricial contractors firm and has being doing lots of work on the many new appartments/penthouses that have sprung up on the coast. He's moved to a flashy place with sea-view in Freemantle and drives a Porsche Cayenne jeep
He arrived in Perth about 10 years ago as a normal electrician living in digs with a contract for a year and a cuople of thousand quid in his pocket - not bad
I know it's lame but I just couldn't leave the football.
Yeah i'm lucky that i'm in the right line of work. Being from Aberdeen it was easy to get into Oil and gas. Then it was just hard work. The money in Baku etc is where you make it though. That's proper bucks. I was out for a total of 16weeks last year and i think i earned more in that time than i did in the rest of the year. The money they are offering in Oz is good though. It's a year contract with the possibility of a futher 2 depending on work scopes. Even if i'm there for a year its still a year.
If you are earning enough money in Perth you will have a ball. You'll find that the people are friendly and after a few visits to the pub it'll be no time before you're buying 'rounds' with people you've met just a couple of days before.
I don't know if you're single or not but the girls/ladies in Perth love a bit of an accent
Might as well make it a nice round 50
