I agree. What on earth have Oxlade and Cleverly done to get in the England team? Had maybe one or two half decent games for a top side and they get in. Cleverly was awful in his last game for England.
If they were playing for Stoke or Sunderland they'd be no where near the the England team yet
Don't even have to be a squad player for a big club. You can be a squad player of an average club that the English manager has a hard on for even though he was sacked from there.
It's laughable isn't it. But then again international footba is a joke anyway so it's actually quite apt

Well it's clear to see that if you play for Liverpool it's easy. It's actually a joke that we to average players from mid-table teams to make up our national squad. It's depressing.

Sandy,
In the 50's & 60's there were possibly only a couple of internationals at most clubs & these were the star players.
With the expansion of football & "friendlies" caps were awarded to players who were to be honest not international players at all. Nowadays a player only has to have a run of 3-4 games in the PL & he is being elevated to international status.
Look at the England team, how many of the current squad would make a European Select Eleven, let alone a World Select Team? Possibly Joe Hart........................................nobody else is either good enough or consistent enough & yes I include Rooney in that.
PS: To qualify the Hart bit, I think he would not even be first choice but behind Buffon & Casillas!
Nugent & Kevin Davies Spring to mind!
I remember the days when it was big news if a new cap was awarded to a player & you did not get caps for games versus teams like San Marino. These were often classed as "B" Internationals. As were most friendlies!!
That is also the reason why so many players have got nearly 100 caps, so many unimportant friendlies. It would be interesting to see how many caps awarded were for meaningless friendlies, I think we might be surprised & even shocked by the findings.
Cyril Knowles only ever won 4 England caps, yet Kyle Walker already has 3...................................
Charlie George only played 60 minutes for England, which is a travesty.
Peter Osgood only had 4 caps
Alan Hudson only 2 caps....Ridiculous!!!
Lee Bowyer & Joey Barton both got 1 cap, which is i too many in my book!!
Just to qualify the caps thing, players do not actually have the number of caps stated. If they say play in a tournament like the Euro's or World Cup then they are awarded only one cap for the tournament irrespective of the number of games they play.
A cap is only awarded if you actually feature in the game as a player, substitutes must actually get on the pitch during the game to qualify.
Wasn't even Jermaine Jenas capped?
