So Hampden declining economys/ world slumps are ok when Labour are in charge
SuperAlly - I don't watch such drivel as the X Factor - strangely enough there was a thread about it last night - started by a bloke apparently
Hampden and what did Labour do for social housing?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Built them (pre-Blair)
Mibbees you could remember to answer the questions?
Cow is an outrageous word to use!!
Pre Blair - exactly!!!!! The labour you all talk of is dead a bit like the era you all remember! And the union thing is blinkered to the extreme!!

I stated this earlier history will shine a light on everything she was responsible for.
SuperAlly - you are quite extraordinary in my experience - I have met many Scottish Tories in my days - most of them with the exception of Michael Forsyth and Ian Laing long since disowned Thatcher- and for good reason. The Thatcher governments were the most idealogically blinkered government that we have ever witnessed

it's not a case of left vs right Super. To have a predetermined ideology before knowing/understanding the full facts is very dangerous and stupid. there are things I'm liberal about and there are things I'm conservative about normally the best solution towards issues are found somewhere inbetween.
fanaticism on any level should be avoided.
No, super ally, your problem is that you think I'm a Labour supporter but I'm not, so I don't have to defend them.
But what I will say is that the Labour Party that existed pre-Blair at least made some effort to protect ordinary people from the ravages of capitalism. New Labour on the other hand bought into everything Thatcher stood for. Including not building council houses.

I genuinely believe super actually thinks it somehow makes him more British/loyalist/unionist to support Maggie Thatcher and the Tories from the 80's. Really makes my heart sink.
I was on various miners pickets with my father during the strikes and it is some of the starkest memories of my life. Feelings of pride at watching the solidarity of the strikers tinged with despair at watching families and communities disintegrate in front of my eyes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Powerful stuff Curly--fair play to you for what you did there. I collected money for them, but wasn't as close as you to the people involved.
Anyone who thinks that strike was about the profitability of the mines, should read Seamus Milnes book 'Enemy Within' a book that inspires, makes you angry, and breaks your heart too.
I can't identify with any new politicians.
How can a career politician speak on behalf of working classes?
Never have they encountered what the majority freak with on an average day.
prescott was the man he was human.
All politicians should have to experience a healthy career in a relevant sector before making any decisions.
Did they not used to be chartered accountants and the likes?
Hampden57 - spot on
Any government that wilfully creates mass unemployment as a weapon to beat communities is a disgrace - sadly, Cameron, son of Thatcher appears to be repeating the failed experiment

I couldn't give a flying donald duck if he has a flat in the Barbican or not--that man is a total hero--he took on the whole of the British establishment and media to protect his members from a politically-inspired onslaught. If only his likes were leading the unions today
Good chat folks
I'm off to watch the history of the planet on BBC 1. Hope they don't mention Thatcher, though I think tonight is about horrible dictators
Curly, the author is Seumas Milne (I think I mis-spelt his first name) And the title is 'Enemy Within: Thatchers Secret War Against the Miners'

Hope you get the book, Curly. That's me off now.
One more thing Curly--no doubt me and you will be back arguing about the much-less important stuff on this forum soon enough.
But just remember that you have my respect, mate
