Excitement kicking in!

Hi TYT.

Im knew to this game of forums, so just 'feeling' my way through the system/site at the moment!

Liking your 1st team, with a couple of slight alterations, and i have faith that they will do the job this year.

I think that Woods and Cooper are unknown quantities at the moment, but the news bouncing around seems positive that they are good acquisitions to the squad!

My team:

Smithies
Hunt - P Clarke - Cooper - Naysmith
McDermott - Johnson - Gobern - Ward
Rhodes - Novak

I must admit that it was hard to leave Roberts out, as in my opinion, he has been the stand out performer over the last 3 years hes been with us! Cooper gets the nod due the 'pace' factor and Gobern seems the 'ball player' we need in the middle of the park.

Up front, is the biggest debate i think. Cody Mac has been mentioned, although unproven at this level. Im honestly struggling to put out a name that i think is the answer though! Definately someone with some pace, but with slightly better skill then Theo!

The Arsenal kids may be the answer short term but im not sure they can handle the 'hussle and bussle' of league 1 . Do you think they can cut it for a whole season? Or do we need someone with experience at this level, but not 'over the hill', to spearhead our promotion push???

Welcome to the pleasure dome chaps....

Got to say after the annual devestation of the play offs, I'm really getting excited for this season.

Another convincing performance against Fleetwood tonight.

3 - 0 is a good score but by the sound of it we had a lot more chances, which just confirms, we are short of a quality loan striker and we're going to be 10 points clear by xmas...

Oooo Toooo Be Aaargh

Sounded good Myth Terrier from the obviously biased HTFC website!

Glad DM got on the scoresheet and DW seems to be on fire at the moment! Hes definately a starter for me come Bury!

Do we need another striker if that formation works???Doesnt sound like the slightly negative, but effective, 4-5-1 we played away last season. Much more of an attacking formation played tonight and look at the result!!!

posted on 22/7/11

I don't get the negative 4-5-1 comments that people keep saying.
We played 4-5-1 in our 28 game unbeaten run. This was in all away games and some home games.
So what is negative about not losing, we were the most successful away team in league one last year.
I say play 4-5-1 (which is also 4-3-3 when we have the ball) every game this season.

Our team is much stronger than last year too with Oscar, Wardy & the super Donaldo...

posted on 22/7/11

I take your point myth, but i dont think we had the attacking players to really make it 4-3-3 last year. We didnt have the person who would run through the middle effectively and we may have found that in Donaldo!

We finally look solid in the middle and if Osacr is also going to support through the middle, then we should hopefully see some of that free flowing attacking football we missed most of last season.

Jimbo, I totally agree with you..

Oscar and Donaldo will take us to the promised land...Alleluia... I believe...brotherly love...

Welcome

Thanks for the welcome guys, and hey jimbo! we can be newbies together!! I liked the sound of the shape of the team tonight. I no the official website had it town as a 433, and some see it as 451 but it looked to me more like the 4231 formation the likes of Germany, Brazil etc play! It could quite nicely work with johnson breaking up the play, Gobern dictating the play and Ward, Mcdermott and roberts (if he stays) causing havoc, and the new gary linekar, jordan rhodes (tounge firmly in cheek) doing what he does best.
BUT.... Why would LC come and say he wants one of novak, lee or cads to prove they should be partnering rhodes, and then play a system that plays 1 up top. Surely, if he's not going to sign another striker he should start working on partnerships!

With regards to the Arsenal Youth, I believe a 6 month loan for the pair of em, would suit both Town on Arsenal, we could see if Aneke could hack it, with the hope of extending for the full season, and Benik could start scoring goals for us, and get himself a move to the championship, just in time for Spencer to come back to us, after hopefully banging in a fair few for cheltenham!

Cheers myth, bit early for brotherly love, but im new so what the hell!!!

Cheers Wetherby!

TYT - Not quite sure we are Brazil but heres to believing!

I think LC needs options and these friendlies are a great way to try new stuff out. This might give him the 'plan b' some people shout about if needed and keeps quite alot of the attacking players on their toes!

I am partial to the 2 up front personally, but if this formation played tonight works, then im all for it! Maybe throw Chuks into the mix for 6 months to give competition up front!

Aye, and as for formations, I reckon the midfield diamond is a good basis start on. With Oscar at the bottom of the diamond, with Robbo & Ward at the sides & Donaldo at the point, with Rhodes & Novak up front. Mind you that kicks my 4-3-3 in me teeth. So on that formation it would be 4-1-2-1-2...
I'm sure that is a ball room dance too..

Joking apart the most important formation is your defencive stance. So with Novak up as a partner to Rhodes, he also has the energy & speed to help out in midfield, which is a 4-1-2-1-1-1 formation...cool...i wanna be a football manager now..

posted on 22/7/11

If we cant be Brazil ill settle for being Germany haha, strong and efficient throughout!!! o sshhhii.. just me dreaming again. Honestly though, i dont care what formation we play as long as we win. We have the attacking options to score goals by the ton in this league (minus maybe that 1 link) I just hope we can keep it together at the back. Like jimbo said earlier, Woods and cooper are unknown entitys at this level, heres to hoping they can keep it together and forge onfield relationships pretty quickly.

Myth, have you been playing Football Manager too much lol!

To be honest, the formations we have all given are a slight tweak or alteration to the stereotypical 4-4-2, 4-5-1 and 4-3-3 formations. LC just needs to tweak them to get the right result! Im sure he can do it though with the players at his disposal!

I see that Cooper got a full 90 tonight alongside Kay. That seems a good alterantive partnership at the CB positions to me, what do you guys think?

PC is a definate starter for me and its a fight between LC and AK for the 2nd slot at CB. Ill gor for LC but only due the pace factor i commented on earlier.

posted on 22/7/11

PC is the 1st name on the team sheet every week..
AK is a good CB, but poo in CM
LC (liam cooper) is the best partner for PC, based on Gateshead game only..
JM is on a par with AK as CB..
So all in all I'm at piece with our CBs, & FBs for that matter...

posted on 23/7/11

id PC is FN on the TS , whos the SN on the TS and which FB would you put on the TS and what about all the CM's we have and which CF's shoud go on the TS is it JR and LN or JR and AL , what about LN and AL

do we go with one CF with DM roaming behind with GR and DW on the wings if we do which CF , JR LN or AL ...and if we do that which holding CMs do we use TM and OG or DJ and OG ....will a more experienced TM and DJ work ....and where does that leave JG and SA

LC will really have his work cut out with the TS on game day
all sounds like BS to me right now though

( ale is going down well tonight lads )

Brilliant MN!!!! defo gave me a little chuckle, after a few of canadas finest and a few vodkas or "highballs" as there called out here, it took me about half an hour to decipher it all. As i have now forgotten all of the above, other than your 1st question, I believe Donaldo should be the 2nd name on the Teamsheet. But the question i ask is, who is the 3rd??

posted on 23/7/11

which part of Canada are you in Yapp
i'm always interested to get to know the Terrier ex-pats who come onto the boards ...especially considering you have also ventured to the frozen north like myself

to be honest i'm not sure who would be the third name on the team sheet but i like the way the team was set up yesterday it had a solid defense base with very fast and mobile attacking players . would be interesting to see how this formation performed in the league , i guess we'll fins out soon ....

the only changes i think i would make to the starting 11 from yesterday would be P Clarke for Kay ...and Maybe Johnson for MIller but thats a tough one we all know johnson is class at this level but Miller really hasnt put a foot wrong since hes been here

@Jimbo, the nearest AK should get to the TS is the stands... (preferably the stands of a different team in a different league in a different country...)

@Mnts, SA is an "attacking midfielder". That, for me, suggests that he would be "cover" for DM OR will play behind JR if GR leaves and DM will play on the wing.

JG will be cover for OG, he didn't pull up any trees for me last season, disappointingly, and I see him as more of a squad player rather than a FN on the TS this season.

@TYT, Crooks needs game-time, he needs a quality loan spell at a decent L2 side. If he plays a full season in L2 he will come back next season challenging for a place in the Championship first team...

Our team, come Bury is thus:

-------------- Smithies/Bennett -------------- (I prefer Bennett)

Hunt --- P.Clarke ------ Cooper--- Naysmith

--------- Johnson ---------- Gobern ----------

Ward ---------- McDermott --------- Roberts

-------------------- Rhodes --------------------

And I like it

in St-Paul Minnesota yapp

i'm very familiar with cold and snow , we had a bad winter last year , having a scorching summer too has hit 100 F a few times the past few weeks....

since the turn of the year we've had a over a 100F swing in temps in just 6 months...crazy

anyway back to footie

i agree that Arfield is an attacking midfielder but he really was disappointing last season. if some fo the key playmakers get injured and we have to rely on Arfield to be the playmaker i think its back to 4-5-1 hoofball i'd rather see a young un given a run out, but thats just my personal opinion

posted on 24/7/11

I think playing behind a lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 like above would demonstrate SA's natural position. His game and style of play is perfectly suited to the role, IMHO, and I can see him performing brilliantly there (if given the chance).
