His contract is running out at the close of the season. If he doesn't sign a new contract, would his depature be a loss or a gain?
................
Why are you assuming he will depart?
If he is going to stay he would have signed the contract or opened negotiations.
Can’t remember the last time I saw him play and thought,’ wow, he’s some player’.
If he left I don’t think it would weaken your defence one bit tbh. Smalling and Jones are both young but they’re got lots of experience already.

I suspect he will be offered a contract on a yearly basis like Giggs.
Going by the quotes in the paper the other day, if he goes, he'll retire. I dont think he'll join anyone else.
In terms of his influence - he'll be a much bigger loss than people are expecting I think.
Didn't he say he isn't thinking about anything until he knows he'll be fit enough? He's waiting for the Christmas fixtures (when they're coming "thick and fast" ) to see how his fitness is.
He might quit, that`s what he is saying... but if he doesn`t, he will stay at United until he is booted!
Experience in defence is more important than midfield, watch Evans and smalling and you can obviously see the amateurish mistakes they make compared to someone like Rio or vidic.

Be a huge loss. Still our eat defender.
Think he's already come out and said it's a load of cobblers that he'd be going anywhere else

Yep. And you can see how much more comfortable they both look with Rio or Vidic next to them.
I could see him going to the MLS, not too demanding on him, big pay and can expand his other interests out there.
Would be a loss as he offers great experience, I know many would disagree but I would say Rio is arguably the best defender in the world over the past 10 years.

I find it bizarre how many people (and even United fans) don't realise or appreciate how good he still is.
Rio, Vid...uno dos...but getting older like us all...but no one should take anything away from him...he HAS earned his money NO?
If Vidic can go a year without injuries, then the lost of Rio won't be so big as Vidic could be partnered next to Smalling and Evans who are very capable defenders. The problem would be if Vidic is out, we won't have an experience CB with these guys. These guys are very good but lack experience. Maybe it would give them a boost. Maybe it might have a negative effect, we won't know. But I think, even without Rio, our CBs are good enough to hold their own in England (though I think Europe might be a problem).
