The Eurovision Song Contest 1997, was the 42nd edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Dublin, Ireland, following Eimear Quinn's win at the 1996 contest in Oslo, Norway with the song "The Voice". This was the seventh time that Ireland hosted the event, and the fourth in five years.

The United Kingdom won the competition, thanks to Katrina and the Waves, led by American-born Katrina Leskanich, making it the second time that the British won the Eurovision on Irish soil (after 1981). It also remains the last time the United Kingdom won the contest (as of 2019).

I think cancelling the season would be the worst option and most unfair overall. 78% of the season has already been played. I could possibly understand this being a serious option if only a quarter of the season had been played. Id much rather games be played behind closed doors if it meant the matches were played.

The Wii U had lifetime sales of about 13 million, in sharp contrast with the Wii, which had over 100 million over its life. This financially hurt Nintendo, with several financial quarters running at a loss through 2014. Nintendo had anticipated the Wii U would sell similarly to the Wii. Nintendo officially discontinued the Wii U on January 31, 2017, about a month before the release of the Nintendo Switch.

It is believed that Cheesy is Maasdam Cheese, a Dutch cheese. As mentioned in the Inanimate Insanity Secrets video, Cheesy and Balloon weren't originally going to be in Inanimate Insanity II. Coincidentally, the two got 13th place in the second season and the first season of Inanimate Insanity in that respective order.

Elections to the Labour Party's Shadow Cabinet (more formally, its "Parliamentary Committee" ) occurred in November 1989. For these elections the Shadow Cabinet was expanded from 15 to 18 seats and, for the first time, MPs had to cast at least three votes for women.

The first woman in space was a Soviet cosmonaut. Valentina Tereshkova launched with the Vostok 6 mission on June 16, 1963. The second woman overall to go into space was also a cosmonaut: Svetlana Savitskaya in 1982 on the Soyuz T-7 mission.

Nicholas David Pope (born 19 April 1992) is an English professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Premier League club Burnley and the England national team.

Pope started his career in Ipswich Town's youth teams and after being released aged 16, he joined Bury Town. He signed for League One club Charlton Athletic in May 2011, before having loan spells with Harrow Borough, Welling United, Cambridge United, Aldershot Town, York City, and Bury. Pope joined Burnley of the Premier League in July 2016.

Jay Hanna "Dizzy" Dean (January 16, 1910 – July 17, 1974), also known as Jerome Herman Dean (both the 1910 and 1920 Censuses show his name as "Jay" ), was an American professional baseball pitcher. During Dean's Major League Baseball (MLB) career, he played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Browns. A brash and colorful personality, he is the last National League (NL) pitcher to win 30 games in one season (1934). After his playing career, “Ol’ Diz” became a popular television sports commentator. Dean was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953. When the Cardinals reopened the team Hall of Fame in 2014, Dean was inducted among the inaugural class.

Marseille and their club president Bernard Tapie would later be found to have been involved in a match-fixing scandal during the 1992–93 season (in which Marseille allegedly paid Valenciennes to lose a match), which saw them relegated to Division 2 and banned from participation in European football for the following season. As the scandal affected only French league matches, Marseille's status as 1993 European champion was not affected.

Kawakawa is a small town in the Bay of Islands area of the Northland Region of New Zealand. It had a population of 1,218 in 2013, down by 132 from the 2006 census. Kawakawa developed as a service town when coal was found there in the 1860s, but coal mining ceased in the early 20th century. The economy is now based on farming. The town is named after the kawakawa shrub.

Genesis P-Orridge, founding member of cult experimental bands Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV, has died.

The musician and artist, who had been battling leukaemia for two-and-a-half years, was 70.

With Throbbing Gristle, Genesis helped pioneer the genre of industrial music. In later life, they became a "body evolutionist", proposing a new gender that was beyond male and female.

The death was confirmed by Genesis's daughters, Genesse and Caresse.
