The postponed Tokyo Olympics will be "scrapped" if they cannot take place in 2021, says Games chief Yoshiro Mori.
Tokyo 2020 is now scheduled to run from 23 July to 8 August next year after being delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Health experts have cast doubt on whether the Games could be held next summer without a vaccine or effective drugs to treat Covid-19 being found.
When asked if the event could be moved again to 2022, Mori replied: "No."
"In that case, the Olympics will be scrapped," he added.

Disney has been accused of trying to claim media ownership of popular hashtag "MayThe4th" on Twitter.
The company's streaming service, Disney Plus, encouraged fans to share their favourite Star Wars memories using the hashtag on Monday.
It followed up with a legal warning suggesting any user who tweeted the hashtag was agreeing to Disney's terms and letting it use their content.
It backtracked after a huge protest by fans and widespread mockery.
The hashtag - a play on the franchise's phrase, "May the force be with you," has been used for years to coincide with the made-up fan holiday.

Captain Moore, who was singled out for praise by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday, was hailed as a “true hero” by WWE star Drew McIntyre.

Alf Ramsey (22 January 1920 – 28 April 1999) was an English football player and manager. As England manager from 1963 to 1974, he guided them to victory in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Knighted in 1967, he also managed his country to third place in the 1968 European Championship and the quarter-finals of the 1970 World Cup and the 1972 European Championship. As a player, he was a defender and a member of England's 1950 World Cup squad, and a part of the Tottenham Hotspur side that won the English League championship in the 1950–51 season.
A statue of Ramsey was dedicated at the reconstructed Wembley Stadium in 2009, and various honours have been afforded to him for his eight years as Ipswich Town manager. He is the first person to be inducted twice into the English Football Hall of Fame: in 2002 in recognition of his achievements as a manager, and again in 2010 for his achievements as a player. The trial of German football legend Franz Beckenbauer on corruption charges has been ended without a verdict.
The five-year long trial, held in Switzerland, had been suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic and the statute of limitations has now expired.
Beckenbauer was one of four men investigated over suspected corruption linked to the 2006 World Cup.
The 74-year-old, who won the World Cup as a player in 1974, and manager in 1990, had denied the allegations.
World football's governing body Fifa said it was "deeply disappointed" that the trial would not go ahead.
In Switzerland, the maximum time in which criminal proceedings can be carried out on a fraud allegation is 15 years.
The courts no longer have jurisdiction over Beckenbauer's case as it relates to an incident in 2005.
Beckenbaur was the head of the World Cup organising committee when Germany were named hosts for the 2006 World Cup.
He was accused of making two payments totalling £8.4m to former Fifa executive Mohamed bin Hammam in 2005.
In October 2015, Beckenbauer said he did not give "money to anyone in order to buy votes".
Germany beat South Africa 12-11 in the World Cup vote, which took place in July 2000.
Jean Fergusson (30 December 1944 – 14 November 2019) was a British television and theatre actress, who was best known for playing the part of Marina on the British situation comedy Last of the Summer Wine from 1985 until it was cancelled in 2010, and her several guest roles in the soap Coronation Street.
Video chat is now the go-to outlet for many social distancers craving social interaction. But having a successful fête isn’t only a question of hopping on camera with friends and kicking off. Social grace is a big part of a successful virtual party – and etiquette doesn’t go out the door just because you’re in your pyjamas in front of a webcam.
This is the start, will be about 100k redundancies in the aviation industry, and millions elsewhere especially in service industries as pubs, restaurants, and hotels aren’t opening any time soon. Economic and social damage from this will be a lot worse than the current awful virus deaths.
Fifa's chief doctor has warned against restarting the interrupted 2019-20 campaign and suggested governing bodies prepare for action next season instead.
Michel d'Hooghe said "as a doctor" he would be "sceptical" about continuing leagues amid the coronavirus pandemic.
