The 2016 presidential campaign of Ted Cruz, the junior United States Senator from Texas, was announced on March 23, 2015. He was a candidate for the Republican Party's 2016 presidential nomination and won the second-most state contests and delegates. Cruz themed his campaign around being an outsider and a strict conservative. In the crowded early field, he chose not to directly confront the leading candidate, Donald Trump, who was also viewed as an outsider candidate. His cordial and sympathetic tone towards Trump contrasted with the more critical approach of rivals such as Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, and Rand Paul. Had Cruz been elected, he would have been the first Cuban American U.S. president and the first U.S. president born outside of the United States.

Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook has resigned from his position with the financially troubled club.

The 53-year-old was appointed in 2017 and led the Latics to promotion back to the Championship in his first season.

Wigan, who won 10 of their last 18 games in 2019-20, were relegated on 22 July after a 12-point deduction for entering administration - a sanction that the club is appealing against.

"It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to leave," said Cook.

Rangers got the Scottish Premiership season under way with a surprisingly comfortable win over Aberdeen thanks to Ryan Kent's strike at Pittodrie.

There was little evidence of the much-discussed intense rivalry between the sides until home defender Andrew Considine was sent off late on.

The hosts looked particularly subdued by the requirement for empty stands.

In a match of little goalmouth action, Kent calmly curled the ball home from Alfredo Morelos' 21st-minute pass.

The former Liverpool winger's strike was no more than Rangers deserved given their almost total domination of the first period.

Oldham Athletic have appointed former Liverpool and Leeds United winger Harry Kewell as their new head coach.

The 41-year-old replaces Dino Maamria, who was sacked by the Latics on Friday.

Kewell has previously managed in League Two with Crawley Town and Notts County but was sacked by the Magpies in November 2018 after just 10 weeks.

"The one thing I think this club does need is stability and if we can get that then we can start to grow things," said the ex-Australia international.

"We've got to get back to the basics and we're having a 'clean slate' here now.

"I think the fans, myself, the owner, everybody wants to start seeing this club progress because we all believe that there's big potential."

He is Oldham's seventh different boss since Abdallah Lemsagam became owner in 2018.
