A "significant number" of issues with the need for voter ID in local elections means the requirement for it should be scrapped, a campaign group has said.

Unlock Democracy said the efforts to introduce the scheme "went very badly", and that the requirement for photo ID was "not necessary".

For the first time, everyone voting in the local elections needed to show ID.

The Electoral Commission acknowledged challenges with the plan.

"I think it went very badly and what happened was highly predictable," Tom Brake, director of Unlock Democracy, told the BBC.

He said his organisation had been tracking social media throughout the day on Thursday, and that it was clear that a "significant number of people didn't know about the need for voter ID".

Other issues included people not bringing with them the correct form of identification - documents such as passports, driving licences and bus passes were required - as well as those arriving with photographs of their ID, which were not valid.

King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla have left Buckingham Palace in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach as the historic first Coronation in 70 years began today. The national anthem played and crowds shouted God Save the King as he started on his 1.3mile journey to Westminster Abbey through streets lined with 2million people and 7,000 British troops. The Diamond Jubilee State Coach, drawn by six Windsor grey horses, arrived at Buckingham Palace for the King and Queen at 10am. Members of the Mounted Division of the Household Cavalry have lined up at the entrance to The Mall ahead of the King's Procession to Westminster Abbey. A mile away from the Palace, Westminster Abbey was rammed with the great and good from Britain and around the world as Charles III 's day of destiny finally arrived and he will be crowned King today. More than 100million people around the world are about to watch the historic first coronation of a British monarch in 70 years - with an estimated 2million people on the streets of London to watch history unfold. Stars in the Abbey included Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stephen Fry, Nick Cave and magician Dynamo, while Dame Emma Thompson gave a thumbs up in excitement. Wigan Athletic have failed to pay all players on time on the fifth occasion this season.

BBC Radio Manchester understands some of the first-team squad have been paid for this month while others have not.

A club statement said chairman Talal Al Hammad had on Friday paid 'as many employees as possible within the organisation with the resources available'.

The remaining wages are due to to paid by Tuesday.

The Latics were deducted three points in March for paying players late three previous times in the 2022-23 campaign.

More delays a couple of months ago meant further charges were brought against the club for a breach of requirements set by the English Football League.

Players have been given Saturday off from training before the team's final game of the season on Monday at home to Rotherham.

The statement added that the owners 'are working hard to ensure that this is rectified as soon as possible and apologise again for the stress this has caused'.

Heavy Conservative local election losses represent a "clear rejection" of Rishi Sunak in his first electoral test as prime minister, Labour has said.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer claimed his party was on course to win the next general election, expected next year.

The Tories lost 48 councils and more than 1,000 councillors across England in Thursday's polls, exceeding their worst predictions.

Many Tories were angry at the scale of the losses, with some blaming Mr Sunak.

Labour says it is now the largest party in local government, surpassing the Tories for the first time since 2002.

"The British public has sent a clear rejection of a prime minister who never had a mandate to begin with," a Labour spokesperson said.

The Liberal Democrats had what their leader Sir Ed Davey said was their "best result in decades", taking control of 12 councils, mostly in Tory heartlands. The party gained 405 new councillors, compared with Labour's 536 gains.

The Green Party gained 241 seats - their best-ever result in local elections - and gained its first majority on an English council, in Mid-Suffolk, although they were overtaken as the biggest party by Labour in Brighton and Hove.

Sport has paid tribute to King Charles III on the day of his coronation.

Players lined up as the national anthem was played before football and cricket matches throughout the country.

Similar tributes were also held before Saturday's final round of games in the rugby union Premiership, which were put back to a 16:00 BST start so fans could enjoy the celebrations.

And there were special ceremonies held at the Newmarket horse race meeting, as well as at the Badminton Horse Trials.

Football's tribute to King Charles III started with Friday's Women's Super League match between Arsenal and Leicester at Boreham Wood, when players surrounded the centre circle to observe the national anthem.

On Saturday, Chelsea forward Sam Kerr, an Australian international, was chosen to carry her country's flag to lead the Australian delegation as they made their way into Westminster Abbey in London before the coronation ceremony.

The national anthem was later observed before four Premier League matches that kicked off at 15:00 BST, which included Manchester City v Leeds, Bournemouth v Chelsea, Tottenham v Crystal Palace and Wolves v Aston Villa.

King Charles has been crowned at his Coronation, the first in the UK for 70 years.

Shortly afterwards, his wife Camilla was crowned Queen.

After the crown was placed on Charles' head, cries of "God Save the King" were heard inside and outside Westminster Abbey.

Gun salutes were made across the UK, the abbey bells rang for two minutes, and corks were popped on the Mall in London where thousands had gathered.

After the ceremony, the crowds who lined the procession route watched the newly-crowned couple make their way to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach.

And on the Mall in front of the palace, the public peered from under their umbrellas to see the family's balcony appearance.

But the BBC understands Prince Harry - who was at the ceremony in Westminster Abbey - was not invited to join his family on the balcony.

The Duke of Sussex arrived at the abbey alongside his cousins Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice.

He was sitting two rows back from his brother, Prince William - the first time they had been seen together since Harry's memoir, Spare, was released.

Home favourite Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez beat Britain's John Ryder in front of 50,000 raucous Mexican fans on a historic night in Guadalajara.

The Mexican champion defended his undisputed super-middleweight crown on points despite a spirited display by Ryder at Estadio Akron.

Alvarez, 32, dominated the fight and dropped Ryder in round five, but the Londoner fought back well.

Two judges scored the bout 118-109 and the other 120-107 to Alvarez.

The four-weight world champion won his 59th fight since turning professional, with two losses and two draws.

"I'm happy with the fight. I won and I'm happy people had a great fight," Alvarez told DAZN. "He's a strong fighter. I knew that; I'm not surprised about it."

Ryder said: "I've dared to do and I've come up short. The overriding thing is I'm gutted."

Promoter Eddie Hearn told BBC Radio 5 Live: "John showed he was a world-class fighter but Canelo is one of the best ever. John deserves massive respect tonight."

The fight was Ryder's sixth loss in 38 bouts and he has now twice failed at world title level, after being defeated by Briton Callum Smith for the WBA 'Super' title in 2019.

Plymouth Argyle were crowned League One champions after coming from behind to win at Port Vale on the final day of the season.

James Plant gave Vale the perfect start when he raced through to fire past keeper Callum Burton in the third minute.

But homegrown midfielder Adam Randell restored parity with a low right-footed shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box before Joe Edwards fired the Pilgrims ahead four minutes later.

Substitute Finn Azaz made sure the title would head to Devon when his right-footed shot from the edge of the box nestled in the top corner.

The win meant Argyle ended the season on 101 points, three clear of Ipswich Town, who drew 2-2 at Fleetwood Town, to clinch a return to the Championship for the first time since 2010.

Vale end the season in 18th place, having won just three times since mid-January.

Celtic clinched their second successive Scottish Premiership title under Ange Postecoglou as Kyogo Furuhashi's 30th goal of the season helped overcome stubborn 10-man Hearts at Tynecastle.

The visitors were out of sorts and second best until the stroke of half-time when Alex Cochrane's yellow card for a foul on Daizen Maeda was upgraded to red following Video Assistant Referee intervention.

Kyogo made the breakthrough and sparked jubilation among the away support with his 50th Celtic goal before substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu steered in a second to ensure the club's 11th title in 12 years.

It is a 53rd league crown overall for Celtic and they can complete a fifth treble in seven seasons with victory over second-tier Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup final on 3 June.

While fourth-place Hearts were incensed by Cochrane's controversial dismissal, Celtic lapped up the celebrations of a title triumph that comes with four games to spare and has been a formality for weeks if not months.
