Former England manager Terry Venables has died at the age of 80 after a long illness.

Venables managed England from 1994 to 1996, most notably leading them to the semi-finals of Euro 96 on home soil.

A former England player, he also managed Barcelona and Tottenham.

"We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness," read a family statement.

"We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives."

Venables won La Liga and reached the European Cup final with Barcelona, and lifted the FA Cup with Tottenham.

As a player, he won two England caps and made more than 500 club appearances between 1960 and 1975, largely for Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers and Tottenham.

Former England captain Gary Lineker, whom Venables signed for Barcelona and Spurs, told the BBC: "He was not a coach or just a manager but a friend. He was charming, charismatic, witty but he was also tough - and that's what you needed to be.

Paul Gascoigne, who played under Venables for England and Tottenham, said: "Such a sad day, cheers boss."

Tottenham held a minute's applause before Sunday's home Premier League match against Aston Villa and both sets of players wore black armbands.

Spurs said they were "extremely saddened to learn of the passing of our former player and manager".

Current manager Ange Postecoglou told Sky Sports: "If you are asking about a person who embodies everything this football club has always wanted to be, it is Terry. It wasn't just about the way he managed or coached; it was the person he was.

"He influenced Australia as well. He was the manager for the national team and almost got us to the World Cup, but the biggest testament is that anyone who I have ever come across that has worked with him will say he is by far the best coach, manager and tactician they have come across."

"He understood football - he had an incredible football brain."

Ex-England skipper Alan Shearer, a member of the Euro 96 side, said: "Extremely sad news. The great Terry Venables has passed away. RIP Boss. I owe you so much. You were amazing."

Current England manager Gareth Southgate, whose penalty in the semi-final shootout defeat by Germany was saved, described Venables as "a brilliant man who made people feel special".

He said: "Any player will have great affinity with the manager that gave them their opportunity, but it was quickly evident playing for Terry Venables that he was an outstanding coach and manager.

"Tactically excellent, he had a wonderful manner, capable of handling everyone from the youngest player to the biggest star.

"He was open-minded, forward-thinking, enjoyed life to the full and created a brilliant environment with England that allowed his players to flourish and have one of the most memorable tournaments in England history."

Former England defender Gary Neville said Venables was "without doubt the most technically gifted British coach we've ever produced".

"A man who gave me a chance to play for my country and became without a shadow of doubt my number one England coach in my whole career," said Neville.

"England certainly needed more like him and it was a real sadness when he left at the end of Euro 96. I felt it never got as good again for England as it was under him."

Barcelona said they "deeply regret the passing of Terry Venables, who managed Barca from 1984 to 1987".

Aston Villa came from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur on the day they remembered former player and manager Terry Venables.

The ex-England manager's death was announced less than two hours before kick-off, and a minute's applause was held to pay tribute to a man who won the FA Cup with Spurs as a player in 1967 and as manager in 1991.

Giovani lo Celso's deflected opener looked to have got the early season pacesetters back on track after their unbeaten start came to an end with back-to-back defeats before the international break.

But Pau Torres levelled with a header deep into first-half added time before Ollie Watkins slotted in his 12th goal of the season to seal Villa's turnaround.

Spurs pushed for an equaliser but could not avoid a third straight defeat - and they have taken the lead in each one of those games.

Tottenham were top of the Premier League table after their first 10 games but are now below Villa after victory in north London sent Unai Emery's team above them into fourth place.

A dominant Jannik Sinner outclassed Australia's Alex de Minaur to help Italy secure their first Davis Cup title for 47 years.

Matteo Arnaldi beat Alexei Popyrin 7-5 2-6 6-4 in a nervy opening singles match to put Italy 1-0 up in Malaga, Spain.

Sinner then backed up his sterling week with a 6-3 6-0 win over De Minaur.

"It has been an incredible feeling for all of us, obviously we are really happy," Sinner said.

It is the second time Italy have lifted the Davis Cup, having previously won the title in 1976.

There were scenes of jubilation as the Italy team flooded on the court to celebrate with Sinner, who raised his arms in the air after De Minaur's backhand skewed wide to ensure victory.

Australia were bidding for a 29th Davis Cup title but have now lost back-to-back finals, having been beaten by Canada last year.

Terry Venables parents were very good singers, and encouraged Venables to also take up singing. At the age of 17 he entered a singing competition at Butlins in Clacton-on-Sea, though Chelsea did not allow him to compete in the final stages. In 2002, he recorded a single for the World Cup together with the band Rider. "England Crazy" reached number 46 in the UK charts. In 2010, he recorded a cover of the Elvis Presley song "If I Can Dream" in association with British newspaper The Sun. It featured a 60-piece Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with the video shot on The O2 Arena's roof while another video, used for the Sun's TV advert, featured Harry Redknapp and Ian Wright as part of the choir and was filmed at Wembley Stadium. The song reached number 23 in the UK charts on 13 June.

WWE legend Tammy Sytch has been sentenced to 17 years in jail for her involvement in a car accident that killed a 75-year-old man.

It comes three months after she pleaded no contest to the counts posed against her - including a count of DUI causing death.

Sytch, 50, also known as WWE Hall of Famer Sunny, was driving a Sedan in March 2022 when she crashed into a vehicle that was being driven by Julian Lasseter and had stopped at a red light near Ormond Beach in Florida.

Police said her blood alcohol level was over three times the legal limit. She has been behind bars since March 2022.

She has a 10-and-a-half year sentence for driving with a suspended license causing death and another seven years for DUI manslaughter. She also eight years probation and her driving license has been revoked for good.

She addressed the victim's family in the Volusia County courtroom, where she appeared in an orange jumpsuit, saying: 'I know my words are not enough but please know that I think about you every day.'

She added: 'I have done something horrible, but I am so much more than the worst that I have done.

'I try and think about the good I have done because when I sit alone and think about what I did to the Lasser family that tragic day, from a stupid decision, I feel the regret and remorse deep inside my soul.

'I know they don't get to rest knowing he is gone. When I was 20, I lost my father as well to heart disease and just last August, my 87-year-old mother passed away while I have been incarcerated.

'I never got to say goodbye to her, just as they didn't get to say goodbye to their beloved family member.'

The 50-year-old appeared in the courtroom in handcuffs and apparently broke down in tears during her speech.

She has served time behind bars before. She served 114 days in jail in Connecticut in 2013 after being arrested for assaulting her boyfriend and then violating parole conditions.

A tribute service for Rosalynn Carter took place today, as politicians and public figures gathered to celebrate the former first lady’s life following her death last Sunday.

Former president Jimmy Carter, 99, attended the tribute for his late wife of 77 years, traveling from his hospice care at home to the Glenn Memorial church in Atlanta. His attendance marks a rare public appearance for the former president, who has been in home hospice care for 10 months.

A funeral motorcade left for Glenn Memorial around noon, with the tribute beginning shortly after 1.30pm ET and ending after 3pm.

Military guards transported Rosalynn’s casket from the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, where the former first lady was in repose, to make the trip to Glenn Memorial church.

Tributes to Rosalynn were delivered by the journalist Judy Woodruff, longtime aide and friend Kathryn Cade and Rosalynn’s children and grandchildren.
