Non-league Alfreton Town's FA Cup second-round tie with League Two side Walsall was called off due to a frozen pitch just minutes before kick-off.
The match was scheduled to be broadcast on BBC One with a 12:30 GMT start but the match officials deemed the Impact Arena surface to be unplayable.
National League North club Alfreton are attempting to reach the third round for the first time in their history.
The game will be rearranged for a date yet to be confirmed.
The ground had filled up with fans after volunteers and club staff had worked hard to roll off covers they hoped had prevented the freezing temperatures from affecting the pitch.
However, referee Sam Allison made the decision to call the game off just after 12:20 GMT, less than 10 minutes before the scheduled kick-off.
Allison told BBC Radio Derby that the covers had been kept on as long as possible to give the game a chance of going ahead.
"It was too hard in too many areas of the pitch, it seemed like an ice rink in some areas," Allison added. "Player safety has to be the priority - it was too dangerous and too unsafe."
The decision was met with boos from the home supporters who had turned up hoping to see a cup upset but Walsall boss Mat Sadler felt the correct call had been made.
"As soon as I walked in, I thought this game is going to be off. It was rock hard and I knew it wasn't going to get any warmer," he told BBC Match of the Day Live.
"I know they've tried to wait as long as they possibly can to see if we can get it played but I don't think it was ever going to be played - it just looked dangerous to me.
"We all wanted to play because we don't want a logjam of games but I think common sense has prevailed. The goalmouth is rock hard - it wasn't safe and it was the right decision to call it off."
Alfreton boss Billy Heath said he understood the decision but felt the game could still have gone ahead.
"I get the reasons why but it depends what era you're from - we didn't have a problem with the pitch, we would have been quite happy to play it," he added.
Crewe's FA Cup tie with Bristol Rovers and several National League matches had already fallen to the cold snap, along with several games in Scotland.
Actor Nigel Harman has pulled out of Strictly Come Dancing just hours ahead of the quarter final after suffering an injury, the BBC has said.
The Casualty star had been due to dance a Charleston with professional partner Katya Jones.
A spokesperson said: "Unfortunately Nigel has sustained an injury which means he is unable to perform and has had to withdraw from Strictly".
It is not clear whether an elimination will still go ahead this week.
The remaining celebrities are actress Ellie Leach, tennis star Annabel Croft, theatre and TV star Layton Williams and EastEnders actor Bobby Brazier.
Asked what would happen this week, a BBC spokesperson said: "It's a live situation and the logistical details will be revealed on the show this evening."
Initial reports suggested Harman had suffered a leg injury, but it was later clarified by the BBC that it was a rib injury.
Arsenal moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League table with victory over Wolves at Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners, 6-0 winners over Lens in midweek, took an early lead when Bukayo Saka got the better of Craig Dawson in the penalty area before firing low into the bottom corner.
It was 2-0 not long afterwards, Martin Odegaard finishing a magnificent team move involving Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus to double the hosts' advantage.
Gabriel Martinelli struck the outside of the post with a low shot, while Leandro Trossard and Jesus both went close as Arsenal pressed for a third goal that would have put the result beyond doubt.
Wolves improved in the second half and Matheus Cunha tested David Raya's reflexes with a powerful effort at the near post, before curling a superb drive into the top corner to give the visitors hope with five minutes remaining.
Gary O'Neil's side were unable to complete the fightback, however, and Eddie Nketiah fired against the frame of the goal for Arsenal not long after Cunha's strike.

National League South side Maidstone came from behind to stun League Two high-fliers Barrow 2-1 in the FA Cup.
A total of 46 places in the league pyramid separate the two sides, but Maidstone made it through to the third round draw thanks to Bivesh Gurung's superb 74th minute winner.
Barrow threatened in the opening minute when Elliot Newby fired narrowly over the top and the visitors opened the scoring after 20 minutes when Ben Whitfield tapped home, after the Maidstone defence failed to clear Emile Acquah's flick towards goal.
The Kent side levelled soon after when Sam Corne pounced on a loose ball in the box before drilling past Barrow goalkeeper Paul Farman.
Paul Appiah was inches away from adding a second for Maidstone just before the break.
Barrow threatened first in the second half when substitute Sam Foley volleyed off target following Whitfield's pass.
However, Gurung smashed home from 20 yards to hand the hosts a shock win and a first place in the third round since their reformation in 1992.

Paul McCallum's last-gasp winner sent Eastleigh into the FA Cup third round and dumped League One strugglers Reading out of the competition.
McCallum put the Spitfires in front, sliding home Scott Quigley's low cross.
It looked as though Femi Azeez had salvaged a replay for the Royals with his left-foot strike to equalise with four minutes left.
But McCallum, the National League's top scorer, stabbed in his second to settle the tie in added time.

Former Labour minister Glenys Kinnock, an ex-MEP and wife of ex-Labour leader Lord Kinnock, has died at 79, her family have said.
They praised her political work, saying Europe, Africa and the UN were the "three great passions of her life".
Her family said she had "endured Alzheimer's" since a 2017 diagnosis and faced it with "innate courage".
Gordon Brown made her a baroness in 2009 so she could serve as a Foreign Office minister in his cabinet.
Her family, which includes Labour MP Stephen Kinnock and daughter Rachel, said they were "devastated" by her death.
In a statement they said: "Neil was with her in her final moments. They had been married for 56 years.
"A proud democratic socialist, she campaigned, in Britain and internationally, for justice and against poverty all her life."
Stephen Kinnock, Labour MP for Aberavon, described her as "a beloved Mum and Nain who was adored by her family and friends".
In a social media post, he paid tribute to his mother as "a truly formidable person in every single way, and with such a cheeky sense of humour".
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer called her a "true fighter" for the party.
He said: "She supported Neil through his leadership and went on to have an impressive political career of her own."
"Glenys was a passionate lifelong campaigner for social justice at home and abroad."
Former prime minister Sir Tony Blair said her death would be "mourned in many countries and corners of the Earth".
In a statement, he called her a "huge figure in progressive politics for decades: incredibly smart, brave, determined and resolute in standing up for what she believed was right."
He said: "Whether in fighting the cause of development, and the eradication of global poverty, social justice in Britain, equality for women or making the case for a European Union of weight and influence in the world, Glenys was passionate and persuasive.
"She was of course an enormous support to Neil but she was a leader in her own right."In her last years, as Stephen and Rachel have written, she took her illness with the same steadfastness which had governed her life."
The charity Dementia UK said that by publicly discussing their experiences of Alzheimer's, the Kinnock family had helped raise awareness and "the challenge that a diagnosis can bring".

Venezuelans have voted overwhelmingly in favour of claiming a disputed oil-rich territory long controlled by neighbouring Guyana.
More than 95% approved establishing a new state in Essequibo, officials say.
Caracas says the region has been part of Venezuela since independence from Spain 200 years ago, but Guyana says it was awarded to what was then British Guiana in the late 19th Century.
The dispute flared up again in 2015 after a major offshore oil discovery.
President Nicolás Maduro hailed the referendum result as an "overwhelming victory for 'Yes' throughout Venezuela".
Essequibo, an area of 159,500 sq km (61,600 sq miles), makes up two thirds of the land controlled by Guyana and is home to around a sixth of its population.
The status of the region has long been a source of tension between the two neighbours.
