A former police officer has pleaded guilty to running a “Ponzi scheme” in which tens of millions were invested by defrauding members of a horse racing betting syndicate.

Ex-Kent Police sergeant Michael Stanley, who headed the Layezy Racing Syndicate (LRS), misused his clients' money between 2013 and 2019, Sevenoaks Magistrates' Court heard.

The court was told the LRS started out with family and friends and grew to more than 6,000 members.

It had a waiting list of 3,000 people at the time it collapsed.

Dame Jacqueline Wilson has been reading to animals at an East Sussex zoo to mark World Book Day.

The former children's laureate read extracts from her best-selling book The Story of Tracey Beaker to the animals at Drusillas Zoo Park, near Alfriston.

The renowned novelist spent time with capybaras, lemurs, meerkats, monkeys, and sloths aiming to "inspire children to read their own way".

A zoo spokesperson said the author had "a natural way with the animals".

She added: "Capybara baby Tango demanded cuddles from the author, lemur Clementine happily settled down next to her, and meerkat Blossom sat on her lap to listen to the story."

Gemma Romanis, head keeper, said: "I grew up reading the Tracey Beaker books, and she definitely inspired a love of reading for me, so it’s wonderful with the help of Jacqueline to encourage other children to read by showing them that even our animals enjoy it.”

“Reading to the animals is of course a fun way to take part in a worldwide celebration, but it also forms part of our daily enrichment programmes for our animals."

Dame Jacqueline Wilson has written more than 100 children's books since her debut novel in 1969.

Tomiichi Murayama, who as prime minister issued a landmark statement of “remorse” for Japan’s actions in World War II, marked his 100th birthday on March 2, expressing his hope that the country will continue its postwar path of peace.

Murayama was born in Oita city on March 3, 1924. He served as prime minister for 561 days from June 30, 1994, to Jan. 11, 1996.

He became the third prime minister in Japan’s history to reach the age of 100. The other two are Prince Naruhiko Higashikuni, who died in 1990 at the age of 102, and Yasuhiro Nakasone, who died in 2019 at the age of 101.

With his trademark bushy eyebrows, Murayama acquired a reputation as a prime minister for common people.

In a statement issued through the Social Democratic Party, a successor of the Japan Socialist Party that he headed, Murayama said, “I hope that Japan will always remain a peaceful country.”

He added: “I don’t really feel that I am 100 years old, but I am happy to live naturally and spend each day with my family.”

As for his daily routine, he said, “I look forward to watching sumo on TV. I go to day care three times a week and continue to walk and do exercises twice a day.”

Mizuho F ukushima, leader of the SDP, said in a message posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Congratulations to you and your wife for turning 100 years old together! We will do our best to realize peace.”

Murayama is also the only living former Japanese prime minister who was born in the Taishō era.

The creator of Dragon Ball, one of the most influential and best-selling Japanese comics of all time, has died at 68.

Akira Toriyama suffered an acute subdural hematoma, a type of bleeding near the brain, his studio said Friday.

Dragon Ball is hugely popular around the world and the comic series has also spawned cartoon and film versions.

Fans have paid tribute to Mr Toriyama for creating characters that have become a part of their childhood.

The Dragon Ball comic series debuted in 1984. It follows a boy named Son Goku in his quest to collect magical dragon balls to defend Earth against alien humanoids called Saiyans.

Mr Toriyama had uncompleted works at the time of his death.

He died on 1 March and only his family and very few friends attended his funeral, according to a statement from the Dragon Ball website.

"He would have many more things to achieve. However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world," his studio said.

"We hope that Akira Toriyama's unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come," it added.

Fans offered their sympathies on social media.

"Thank you for creating a manga that represents my youth. Rest in peace, thank you for your hard work," read a post on X, which instantly got 500 likes.

"It's too soon, it's too sad," another Japanese X user wrote.

"His legacy will live on forever. Thank you for creating the most iconic anime character of all time Akira," another user wrote.

Born in Nagoya, Japan in 1955, Mr Toriyama broke into the comic book world in the early 1980s with Dr. Slump, which tells the story of a little girl robot Arale and her scientist creator.

But Dragon Ball was his most famous work. To many fans, Son Goku's journey from a kid who fumbles his martial arts training to a high-flying hero who can shoot bolts of electricity from his hands mirrors their own struggles against self-doubt as they grew into adulthood.

Dragon Ball inspired fan fiction writers and cosplayers who style their hair like the characters' sharp and pointed locks.

The cartoon version has been dubbed in numerous languages and Dragon Ball action figures are a staple in toy stores from Japan to China and Southeast Asia.

In a 2013 interview with a Japanese newspaper Asahi, Mr Toriyama said he had "no idea" how Dragon Ball became so popular around the world.

He described the series as a miracle, "given how it helped someone like me who has twisted, difficult personalities do a decent job and get accepted by society".

Marcus Smith kicked a last-gasp drop-goal as England stunned Ireland and ended their chance to win back-to-back Grand Slams in a Six Nations thriller at Twickenham.

England trailed by two points after James Lowe's late try before Smith's final act chipped the ball over the posts to send Twickenham into delirium.

In an action-packed second half, Lowe opened his account with an acrobatic finish in the corner before tries by George Furbank and Ben Earl gave a resurgent England the lead.

Lowe's second was an equally fine finish and appeared to clinch Ireland the title before Smith came off the bench to deliver the decisive blow.

Ollie Lawrence opened the scoring for England in a blistering start but Ireland, chasing history in their pursuit of a first back-to-back Grand Slam in the Six Nations, gained a foothold in the game through Jack Crowley's assured boot.

Victory for England keeps their faint title hopes alive while Ireland can retain their crown with a win over Scotland on the final weekend.

France overpowered winless Wales in an eight-try Six Nations thriller in Cardiff.

France scored tries through Gael Fickou, Nolann Le Garrec, Georges-Henri Colombe, Romain Taofifenua and Maxime Lucu, with Thomas Ramos adding 20 points.

Wales managed tries from Rio Dyer, Tomos Williams and Joe Roberts but were outmuscled in the second half.

France scored 25 unanswered points in the final quarter.

It was a highest points tally for Les Bleus in Wales as Fabien Galthie's side bounced back from a draw with Italy, lifting themselves to fourth in the table.

Warren Gatland's side, who are rooted to the bottom of the table, now face the possibility of a first Six Nations Wooden Spoon since 2003.

This was an 11th defeat in 12 Six Nations games for Wales - four during this tournament - and a sixth successive loss to France.

Wales play Italy on the final day of this year's Six Nations in Cardiff, while France host England in Lyon and Scotland travel to face leaders Ireland.

A huge search and rescue operation is under way in the Swiss alps after six skiers went missing.

The six set off from Zermatt, home of the famous Matterhorn, on Saturday, on a ski tour towards Arolla, along the Swiss Italian border.

Somewhere close to the 3,706m high Tete Blanche mountain, they went missing.

Local police say all available rescue teams on both sides of the route have been alerted, but severe weather is hampering the operation.

There have been high winds in the alps for some days, and over the last 24 hours, heavy snowfalls. Saas-Fee, a winter resort neighbouring Zermatt, is currently cut off by snow.

Anjan Truffer, the head of Zermatt's air rescue service, told the BBC the weather is currently so bad that "flying is not an option", with "very strong winds, heavy snow, high avalanche danger, and zero visibility".

Mr Truffer said he believes the six, whose identities and nationalities have not been disclosed, were overcome by the bad weather, rather than struck by an avalanche, because they went missing on a part of the Zermatt Arolla route where the risk of avalanche is low.

Ski tourers typically follow unprepared alpine routes, and should be equipped with location finders and avalanche shovels.

The last signal from the group was recorded overnight. It was "not verbal", Mr Truffer said, but allowed rescue services to get a rough idea of their location.

The route from Zermatt to Arolla is part of the famous 120km "Haute Route" from Zermatt to Chamonix.

It is very popular, but suitable only for the most experienced skiers, and can take several days.

The rescue services say there is a good chance the missing skiers can survive, despite temperatures of -16C and winds of up to 80km/h, if they have managed to dig themselves a snow hole.

The hope now is that the weather will clear, allowing the rescue helicopters to fly.

"We can land up there, that's not the problem, we do that all the time. But we need the flying condition," said Mr Truffer.

Portugal's centre right is leading a tight election race, but will struggle to form a majority in parliament.

The Democratic Alliance is aiming to bring an end to eight years of rule by the centre-left Socialists.

It is projected to win up up to 31.5% of the vote, ahead of less than 29% for the Socialists.

But the far-right Chega (Enough) party appears to have cemented its bid to be the third force in Portuguese politics.

An initial exit poll for public broadcaster RTP gave ex-football pundit André Ventura's party 14-17% of the vote, after a campaign focused on corruption and immigration. Results suggested it might do even better than that, a dramatic improvement on 7% only two years ago.

Chega has set its hopes on becoming a kingmaker, five years after it secured its first seat in parliament, and the party hailed an "absolutely historic" night.

But the main winner on Sunday appeared to be the leader of the centre right, Luís Montenegro, whose supporters chanted "Portugal, Portugal" as his face appeared on TV screens as the exit polls became clear.

Ten million Portuguese had the chance to cast their vote in Sunday's snap election, four months after Socialist Prime Minister António Costa stood down amid corruption allegations, even though he was never named as a suspect.

Turnout was set to be the highest for years, at almost 65%, even though elections were last held only two years ago.
