Russia's military says it has captured a small town in eastern Ukraine called Niu-York, as part of its push towards big population centres in the Donetsk region.
Ukraine's military has not confirmed the loss of Niu-York, saying only that Russian forces are attacking close to the town and other areas. The army was giving the attacks "a worthy rebuff... and the fighting continues", it said.
Although only a small settlement, controlling Niu-York would represent another step towards the two Donetsk hubs of Toretsk and Pokrovsk.
One of the aims of Ukraine's seizure of territory in Russia's Kursk region is thought to be to force Russia to move some of its forces away from the eastern campaign.
There is no indication so far of that happening, despite Ukraine's commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi now claiming control of 93 Russian villages and towns.
President Volodymyr Zelensky described the situation in the east as difficult, but said Ukrainian troops were doing all they could to destroy the Russian forces. The military chief told a briefing that Russia was sending additional troops to the front line in the east.

Plymouth had two players sent off as they drew 1-1 with QPR at Loftus Road in the Championship.
The away side saw Adam Forshaw dismissed for a second yellow card less than 30 minutes into the game before substitute Freddie Issaka was shown a straight red in second-half stoppage time.
Michael Frey’s header had given the Hoops the lead inside three minutes before Morgan Whittaker scored a stunning 25-yard equaliser.
Forshaw received his marching orders moments later for a late foul on Jimmy Dunne, having been booked earlier for pulling back the impressive Karamoko Dembele.
The visitors weathered a second-half storm with 10 men and had a strong penalty shout waved away late on when Jake Clarke-Salter looked to have a hold of Kornel Szucs’s shirt in the QPR box, before Issaka was sent off for going through Hoops full-back Kenneth Paal.
The result means both sides remain without a win after three games of the Championship season.
Joe Root’s nerveless half-century helped England overcome some significant scares to defeat Sri Lanka on a tense fourth day of the first Test at Emirates Old Trafford.
Set 205 for the lead in the three-match series, England were wobbling at 70-3 following the dismissals of Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Dan Lawrence.
Root and Harry Brook were required to show the utmost caution as spinner Prabath Jayasuriya caused problems from one end and the seamers probed from the other. Brook could have been caught by flying sub fielder Ramesh Mendis on four when England had 78.
The Yorkshire pair added 49 for the fourth wicket, but England still needed 85 when Brook was caught and bowled by Jayasuriya for 32.
Root was immaculate, while Jamie Smith provided momentum with 39 from 48 balls. Though Smith was bowled with 22 required, Root was joined by the dependable Chris Woakes and the former captain was 62 not out when a five-wicket win was sealed at 19:16 BST.
All this after England endured a concerning morning when Sri Lanka looked primed to post an even larger target.
Kamindu Mendis moved to a fine 113 and Dinesh Chandimal 79, their stand for the seventh-wicket partnership worth 117 as England struggled without the injured Mark Wood.
The second new ball came to the hosts’ rescue, Sri Lanka losing their last four wickets for only 19 runs to be bowled out for 326.
Wood, who has a thigh injury, seems likely to miss the second Test at Lord’s on Thursday, leaving Olly Stone set for his first cap in more than three years.

Everton manager Sean Dyche has urged fans to recognise the struggle of managing a club who have "no money" and have sold some of their best players.
The Toffees suffered a 4-0 defeat at Tottenham after losing 3-0 at home to Brighton on the opening day of the season.
When asked about whether his team lacks quality and faces a battle against relegation, Dyche said: "It is a never ending challenge since I've been here, but it is all I've known at Everton Football Club."
The Toffees sold Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana to Aston Villa for £50m in July and brought in defender Jake O'Brien, forward Iliman Ndiaye and midfielder Tim Iroegbunam for around £40m combined, while Jesper Lindstrom and Jack Harrison have joined on loan.
"We've sold a player who is growing, maturing, and becoming a very good player and we've got to start the process again and make others grow and mature and become good players," added Dyche.
"It just keeps going and going and going, that's just the reality of the club. I work on realities and it is difficult at Everton Football Club. There are plenty of myths about it. The latest was a myth about us being in Europe. What happened in the last three seasons? Were we not trying to be in Europe?
"There has to be reality and I've tried to bring that and I am still trying to bring that. The fact is, coming here with a tough squad is tough, but that doesn't mean you accept it. Our responsibility is to take action when it is tough."

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed midfielder Matt O’Riley's move to Brighton is imminent.
The 23-year-old is absent for Sunday's league visit to St Mirren, with Rodgers telling BBC Scotland: "He'll be down in Brighton completing his medical.
"That move should be done over the course of the next couple of days."
O'Riley, who has two Denmark caps, has scored 27 goals in 125 appearances for Celtic, collecting six winners' medals, including three Scottish Premiership titles.
"He has been absolutely magnificent in this last year," added Rodgers. "He gave everything to the team and the club.
"Right up to his very last day he was out doing extra work. That shows the mentality he has.
"So, I'm pleased for Matt in terms that he gets a move to the Premier League - and for us, we push on. That's the model of the club."
The fee could constitute a Celtic and Scottish record transfer sum as the Scottish champions were insisting on surpassing the fees paid by Al-Ittihad for Jota last summer and for Kieran Tierney's 2019 switch to Arsenal.
It means Celtic stand to make a huge profit on the London-born player who joined from MK Dons in January 2022 and is under contract until May 2027.

The world's oldest living man has declared he has no "special secrets" to pass on about his longevity as he celebrated turning 112.
John Tinniswood, who was born in Liverpool on 26 August 1912, told the Guinness World Records he had "no idea at all" why he had lived so long.
The lifelong Liverpool fan, who lives at a care home in Southport, became the world’s oldest living man in April when 114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez Mora died.
He said he had been "quite active as a youngster" and did "a lot of walking", but believed he was "no different" to anyone else, adding: "You either live long or you live short and you can’t do much about it."
Mr Tinniswood, who was born the year the Titanic sank, said he would be taking turning 112 "in my stride like anything else".
"Why I’ve lived that long, I have no idea at all," he said. “I can’t think of any special secrets I have.
"I was quite active as a youngster, I did a lot of walking... whether that had something to do with it, I don’t know.
"But to me, I’m no different. No different at all."
Happy 112th Birthday John Tinniswood!
Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has died at the age of 76.
Eriksson, the first non-British manager of the England team, led the Three Lions to the quarter-finals at three major tournaments during his five-year spell in charge between 2001 and 2006.
In January, Eriksson said he had "at best" a year to live after being diagnosed with cancer.
His children, Lina and Johan, said on Monday: "Our father Sven-Goran Eriksson fell asleep peacefully in his home at Bjorkefors outside Sunne this morning. He has for a long time fought bravely with his illness, but now it came to an end.
"Dad told us at the beginning of this year about his serious illness and received an amazing response from friends and football fans around Europe.
"He was invited to several football teams in England, Italy, Portugal and Sweden. They shared their love for football and for dad.
"It was unforgettable for both him and us. He expressed his appreciation and joy and stated that such beautiful words are usually only uttered when someone has died.
"We hope that you will remember Svennis as the good and positive person he always was both in public and at home with us."
Eriksson managed 12 clubs, including Manchester City, Leicester, Roma and Lazio, winning 18 trophies.
The Swede also had spells in charge of Mexico, Ivory Coast and the Philippines.
After retiring as a player at the age of 27, he began his managerial career with Degerfors in 1977 before joining fellow Swedish side Gothenburg, where he won the league title, two domestic cups and the 1982 Uefa Cup.
He then went on to enjoy two spells with Portuguese giants Benfica as well as managing Italian sides Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Lazio - where he won seven trophies including the Serie A title, two Italian Cups and the European Cup Winners' Cup.
Following his diagnosis, Eriksson spent the year visiting some of his former clubs, including Lazio and Sampdoria.
In March the Swede, a lifelong Liverpool fan, helped lead a Liverpool Legends team which beat an Ajax Legends side 4-2 at Anfield.
He shared a poignant message at the end of his new documentary 'Sven', which was released earlier this month.
In the closing scene of the Amazon film, Eriksson says: "I had a good life. I think we are all scared of the day when it is finished - when we die.
"But life is about death as well. You have to learn to accept it for what it is.
"Hopefully at the end, people will say: 'Yeah, he was a good man.' But everyone will not say that. I hope you will remember me as a positive guy trying to do everything he could do.
"Don't be sorry, smile. Thank you for everything - coaches, players, the crowds. It has been fantastic. Take care of yourself and your life and live it. Bye."

Britain's Emma Raducanu says she is "feeling good" as she aims for her first win at the US Open since lifting the 2021 title when she plays American Sofia Kenin on Tuesday.
Raducanu, 21, meets fellow Grand Slam champion Kenin in their first-round match at around 23:30 BST (18:30 local time).
Three other Britons - Katie Boulter, Jack Draper and Dan Evans - also play on day two of the final major tournament of the 2024 season.
A lot of the attention will again focus on Raducanu, who stunned the world by winning the title in New York as a teenage qualifier.
A year later, Raducanu lost in the first round as she dealt with the scrutiny which followed her seismic success, and missed last year's tournament after wrist and ankle operations cut short her season.
She has moved back into the world's top 75 after an encouraging run to the Wimbledon fourth round in July, but has only played one tournament since, when she reached the Washington quarter-finals.
"I love this tournament and I have amazing memories from it. It's a great feeling to be back and to see my face on the wall and see name on the trophy," Raducanu said about her return to Flushing Meadows.
"I'm still only 21 so I have a lot of years to win this title and the other Slams. I'm feeling good."
Wolverhampton Wanderers' move for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is off.
The deal for the 26-year-old has proved too expensive for the West Midlands club and is considered over, BBC Sport understands.
Ramsdale is seeking first-team football after losing his place to David Raya and might still leave Emirates Stadium before Friday's transfer deadline, but it is unlikely a move to Molineux will be resurrected.
Last week Wolves made a loan offer with an option to buy for about £20m, and remained in talks with Arsenal over the weekend.
Ramsdale, who has five England caps, joined the Gunners from Sheffield United in 2021 in a deal worth £24m, and has two years left on his contract.
Wolves' finances are tight, despite bringing in almost £100m with the sales of Pedro Neto and Max Kilman this summer.
Boss Gary O'Neil warned, after Sunday's 6-2 home defeat by Chelsea, the club needed to be comfortable with their transfer business when the window closed.
"When it shuts we need to be comfortable with where we are," he said.
"There's a lot of work for myself and I need to get more out of the group we have. Then there's an understanding the Premier League is tough and if you sell good players it makes you weaker."
Their £20m offer for Burnley winger Luca Koleosho was rejected last week, and that deal is also unlikely to progress.
Ipswich have sealed the £8m signing of Luton winger Chiedozie Ogbene.
The Ireland international, 27, has signed a four-year deal at Portman Road and becomes their 10th signing since they returned to the Premier League.
The Tractor Boys had been looking for another forward despite spending almost £100m this summer, after winger Wes Burns suffered a hamstring injury in the 2-0 opening day defeat by Liverpool.
"I’m very excited and feel lucky to have this opportunity to play in the Premier League again,” said Ogbene.
“I’ve had very positive chats with the manager [Kieran McKenna] and for someone to believe in me, that I could play at this level again, means a lot to me and my family.
“I know what he wants from me and the role I will play and I’m here to be a positive addition to the squad as we look to achieve our goals."
Ogbene, who has also played for Cork, Limerick and Brentford, joined Luton from Rotherham on a free transfer last summer and impressed in the Premier League, despite the Hatters' relegation.
He scored five goals in 39 games in all competitions and was the second fastest top-flight player last season, after Tottenham's Micky van de Ven, having clocked 36.93kph against Fulham last September.
Ipswich, who travel to AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, also remain in talks with Chelsea for striker Armando Broja ahead of Friday's transfer deadline.
McKenna said: "We've spoken to him, I think that's well known. There's ongoing discussions with Chelsea but I've not been privy to them over the last 24 hours. We'll see if it's the right thing for the club and the player."
Made In Chelsea's Spencer Matthews says running 30 marathons in 30 days was "a humbling experience" after completing The Great Desert Challenge in Jordan.
Speaking to Amol Rajan on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he said: "I'll always look back at this time in my life. It's very special."
Running for Global's Make Some Noise charity, Matthews now holds the Guinness World Record for most marathon distances completed on sand in one month by a male.
He started his first marathon on 29 July and finished his last on 27 August, having run a total of 1,266km, with temperatures reaching up to 44C.
