How good are we?

Exactly, dunc.

Rotation at the begining of the season is pointless. The players benefit fitness wise from playing more games and therefore do not needresting as much.

Rotation is good when neccessary. Not for the sake of it.

I'd argue that one of the reasons we get so many injuries is due to rotation.

i'd actually agree with that

Really?

You don't think Kagawa is better than Young? Or Anderson is better than Cleverley? Or that Nani is better than Valencia? Or that Vidic is better than Smalling?

I'm not saying the 'first choice' players are miles better than their replacements but they'd make our style a bit better to watch and would probably cause more problems than the opposition.

In the the last half of last season we saw 8 players rotate a front 6 of Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Rooney, Valencia, Nani and Young.
So it hasn't always been change for changes

Park? Welbeck? Chica?

Fergie always rotates when he has a fit squad or injuries. It's his way of managing. It seems to be detrimental to the way we play though.

Yes but it isn't by a margin so great that we should turn into an awful footballing side. The fact is, regardless if our side, we rarely dominate games and play great football. We have our moments, but not enough.

Rotation is why we're top of the league!

Look at Chelsea and Arsenal. They kept the same team for most of the beginning of the season and then 'hit the wall' in Arsene's own words and then dropped off.

Is it a coincidence that City and United are starting to move away from the rest even though they have been the two teams that have rotated the most?

The EPL is a far more physically demanding league than any other in Europe and players get burnt out here far more than anywhere else. The rotation might not make for a pretty team week to week but you can understand why it happens. None of our team looks at all tired and we're winning games nearly every week.

Compare that to Arsenal and Chelsea who are in freefall and you can see why the boss rotates.

It's sad that we'll rarely see that OP team much but I guess you can understand why.

I meant to put Welbeck there as there was only 7 names, not 8. And Park only played once in the run in I think. I can't remember Hernandez playing much that second half. But I remember it was mainly Welbeck and Rooney.

Rubbish, we are the top 2 teams because we are the best top teams. We are top inspite of rotation rather than as a result.

Xabi Alonso said that he was shocked at how much more tired he was after a La Liga game than a Premier League game.

Which also kind puts a hole in this lazy cliche about the prem being the most physically demanding.

Arsenal and Chelsea are in freefall because they aren't very good. Nothing to do with rotation.

i agree there.

in terms of physicality the PL will probably be the toughest, but in terms of stamina la liga will be much tougher as teams keep the ball so much better, and you use more energy when you dont have the ball than when you do.

Not using rob's theory about it being more tiring to attack than defend for a whole match.

C'mon mate, Chelsea players were knackered by October and then they brought in a couple of players for Mata and Terry and have struggled.

City and United have got the best squads out of any team in the league but we are using those squads to cover for the injuries and tired players.

Chelsea have had to use the same team for league, cup and CL and that is taking its toll. In the 3 competitions we've played this season we've been able to rest certain players and its helped.
Arsenal too. They have flogged Cazorla and Arteta to death and aren't looking as good as they did earlier in the season.

like i say, i agree with rotation to a degree.

if fergie wants to rotate, then fine, do 1 or 2 per game, not 4 or 5.

We're top because everybody is else pants.

The rotation of scholes and giggs in particular is why we have list three times this season...

It depends on how you attack mate. If you pass the ball about around the oppositions penalty area then it isn't as tiring as constantly attacking down the wing like we did for the first 30 mins of the Chelsea game.

Hence why we tired in that game. It's our all or nothing counter attacking style which tires us out at tough away ground.

If we kept possession and passed the opposition to death (like in the second half of the Spurs game) we'd conserve a lot more energy.

It has had an affect but it is not the reason they're doing so badly. They are just in very poor form, and that's what happen to teams that aren't that good.

Like I said, we are top in spite of the continual rotation.

I'm not saying we should have played the same 11 every game. But for the majority and rest accordingly.

If you can't see that rotation is detrimental to the way the team plays then I give up with you.

You need to stop making excuses for the team and just accept the reasons for why we are seeing what we are seeing.

Macca wrote a fantastic article yesterday about square pegs and round holes, and it sums up our predicament nicely.

We weren't tired after half an hour against Chelsea. Please stop with these fabrications. They are boring.

dunc. I'm sure you've written many. But that one stuck in my mind as it was recent and also applicable to what we are talking about.

Fergie doesn't know his beat 11, plain and simple. It's not as though he picks similar teams for all the big games is it?
