Just bagged his second.

It's impossible to compare players between eras.

Hope he scored 7 just to annoy Falcao

Brilliant - no doubt

Greatest - no

The best players perform at every club. He needs to do it elsewhere. He has scored a phenomenal amount if goals but he has world class players around him as well to get him the ball.

So you're saying it is impossible for the best player in the World to be dedicated to one club?

posted on 9/12/12

that sounds a bit nonsensical to me gary

the best players have also won world cups

Yes as far as I am concerned some players suit a certain club and its style.

Just my opinion.

Not on the same level but Heskey was unplayable when he was at Leicester but looks a complete donkey everywhere else.

He has never won the World Cup or Euro Championships

The standard of football at a WC is, at times, diabolical. CL is a much better competition of a higher standard and I will never judge footballers based on their performances for their national team.

I don't like Messi too much, however, this achievement is just incredible.

He's Argentinian.

People can use different justifications for what makes someone the best player ever, like stats, titles and awards, but for me it just comes down to his unbeliveable ability on the pitch.

And week in week out he does things that no player has ever been able to consistantly do.

I think a lot of people are starting to take what he does for granted, he barley gets credit for a hatrick now, or beating 3 - 4 men and dinking it over the keepercoz it's now expected of him.

I think he's the greatest off all time and that it's not even that close...

you can't fault players for not winning certain tournaments. Its a team game, not an individual sport. If you are surrounded by substandard players theres not much you can do about it. so saying he cant be considered one of the best coz he hasnt won the wc is redundant

posted on 9/12/12

And regarding the World Cup- in theory does that mean the country in which you were born could preclude you from being considered as the best ever?

Yes, Messi is from Argentina which is a massive country and is usually well equipped to compete at a World Cup.

However, what if there was this amazing player from Wales that was winning everything with his club. But in reality he's never going to win the World Cup, is he?

maradona did it twice at the world cup and with napoli

Henrik

I only threw in WC to get a few bites on my Euro Championship comments

Some players will never make the latter stages of the WC due to their country - Dalglish whereas other will single handedly drag their country to victory - Maradonna

So? Whats that got to do with the point I made?

you said If you are surrounded by substandard players theres not much you can do about it

and maradona had average players around him and yet won many trophies with napoli and also with his country
