VVS- the most elegant batsman ever, you could watch him all day

posted on 21/12/12

was priveldged to watch some of his best batting moments. esp from 2008-early 2011, he was just too gd. saved so many matches consistently for india.

281 vs australia, probably the greatest innings ever played

Favs Hayden, Gilly and McGrath.

Non aussies; the little master, Akhtar, Bond and Waqar

Currently Steyn is the only bowling really worth watching.

Funny when there's no present bowler worth mentioning other than Steyn ....

Yet Anderson consistently ripped through both India's and Aussie batting in series he has played them, laughable. Multiple people have chosen sachin and he just can't play Anderson

Present defo Anderson, great bowler and match winner. Past agree with the OP that Thorpe was underrated batsman, very stylish and in a poor team, would rather watch him than Gower.

Akram, Younis, Thorpe, Ambrose, Gough, S Waugh, Lara, Inzi, Dravid... All awesome players.

Dravid good shout. I prefer him to Sachin all day..Sure Tendulkar has all the recods.. But Raul Dravid always comes across a genuine person ta-boot.. sachin to me comes accross as one eyed and greedy..

And i don't get this Laxman loving either.. Flat an slow track bully, bit like Sehwag.. Oh hasnt Laxman got all the time in the world to play his shots.. Yeah but 99% of the time you can play 3 shots to one ball on some pitches..
The likes of Thrope and Trescothick were good on the hook and the drive shots straight and through the covers.. But they will never get the credit for it. Because they are English..

I pushed the JA606 'Cricket' header on this iPod of mine by pure accident and arrived at this thread.

I have many favourite cricketers from the past, some of which are some of the most outstanding performers I have ever seen. Among them are:

Don Shepherd (Glamorgan)
Graham Gooch (Essex)
John Childs (Essex)
Malcolm Nash (Glamorgan)
Brian Davison (Leicestershire)
Paddy Clift (Leicestershire)
Alan Lamb (Northamptonshire)
Ian Botham (Somerset & Worcestershire)
Bob Willis (Warwickshire)

and the best fielder I have ever seen. A more safe pair of hands you will never find:

Alan Ealham (Kent)

Michael Vaughan. His 185 from the new years test in 2003 was a joy to behold. i could watch him bat, not all day but for an entire month.

How about an XI:

Dennis Amiss-The front-on stance, the aura of solidity and stoicism, almost nonchalance. The feeling that, but for Lillee and Thompson, he'd have been classed as an all-time great but wasn't, quite. A Warks legend.

Marcus Trescothick-England's left-handed Sehwag (sort of), only not quite as good. Watching him attack the Aussies in 05 was one of the best things I've watched.

David Gower-Classical, silky batsman, but infuriatingly fallible. Also a bit of a wit, a character, Sopwith Camel and all that.

Viv Richards-The 'Master-blaster'. Used to hate the fact that he was taking England apart. Again. But used to love watching him do it

Derek Randall-Did he ever stay still? Cap doffing live-wire who is STILL one of the greatest fielders I've ever seen.

Ian Botham-'81. '85. 86-7. 'Who writes your scripts'. 'Nuff said.

Imran Khan-Exocet inswinging yorkers. Tavare and Gower brought to their knees before him. Loved watching him bowl.

Alan Knott-Quirky wicket-keeping genious. Never missed a chance and could improvise with the best of them with the bat.

Malcolm Marshall-The pitter patter approach, the deadly release, the beaming smile when he got the wicket he wanted, the ability to do almost what he liked with the ball.

Richard Hadlee-The classical fast bowlers action? Bowled swing and seam with a gunslingers understatement.

Derek Underwood-Something about the way he bowled. He was like a cross between an accountant and an assassin. Businesslike, thorough, inconspicuous, deadly.

Dougie Walters...past
Sachin Tendulkar...present

I'd say we've never had a wicket-keeper of Alan Knott's agility and reliability since he retired. As for Derek Underwood, I think he was a slow left-armer (could be wrong) and pitched a full length with deadly accuracy. I'd have him in my England 12 today.

Favourite past: Sir Viv. Not just because of his ability but I've never seen a player before or since walk to the wicket with a swagger that says " I'm here to destroy you and you and I know it" . Dravid runs him close for his attitude of you shall not pass.

Fav current: Hard to look past SRT. However despite his lack of runs in many places against many good attacks, not many players can turn a game the way Shewag does, in form or not he can destroy you and turn any game quicker than most, for entertainment it's him, for sheer class and ability I love to watch Kallis bat, he, like Alec Stewart, never looks out of form, runs or not, they always look like they are in top nic.

.........

Great list of players there. Been very lucky to see them all Iand I can't disagree with one of them, in their own way.

Might suggest Roger Harper runs Ealham close as best fielder I've seen, along with Neil Fairbrother.

Trevor Penny was some fielder...
