Realistic transfer targets.

The other factor is we lost good players who could still do a job for us now (Corluka, Krancjar) simply to allow funding for players who are not the calibre we should be looking at (Sigurdsson, Dempsey).
=====================

Im not quite sure that is true OP.

Niko and Charlie both left because Harry wouldnt give them a game. They werent sold to make a profit to allow us to get Sigg and Demps in, they were sold because theyd had enough of spending the whole season sat on the bench.

Maybe your right, but then that is Redknapp's fault. How we could have done with Corluka this season.

I would imagine it will be the same window as we have been accustomed to, with no big money arrivals and maybe the odd loan deal.

Last Minute Levy likes a bargain, which there are very few of in January.

We can all see what we need to push us on, I would love to replace Livermore and Huddle20stone with Moutinho and Willian...... but it wont happen in January.

Until we are in our new stadium and competing better financially, we will always be the `nearly men`.

I hope Levy proves me wrong, but I doubt it.

We are seriously missing the creativity of Modric and VDV. Surely Levy can see this. I see Chelsea have been linked with Willian this morning.

I've said many a times that Corluka is a miss for us. I'm getting increasingly frustrated with Kyle Walker and his sloppiness this season, but that will be resolved when BAE returns and Naughton can push for his natural RB slot.

I agree that we do need a £20m+ player of 2 to take us to top levels, but that will only happen if we sell our average/fringe players.

BaLennon, out of interest who would you consider our fringe players and how much could we expect to get for them?

posted on 23/12/12

We need Levy to miraculously somehow get £15m - £20m for Jenas, Bentley, Livermore and Huddlestone....... problem is shifting them as they will be on good contracts

Add Gomes to that....

posted on 23/12/12

Toda, I'd say the obvious ones like Cudicini, Gomes, Jenas, Danny Rose (I can't see him coming to us now to be honest). Average players like Demsey, Thudd and Siggy. To be honest, we can only sell the last 3 once we gain a couple of quality replacements. Also, I'm one of a minority that wants Bentley to be given a final chance when he returns, but if he messes up again then bye bye to him in the Summer.

As a team we need quality to progress, not average players. Otherwise we'll be stuck to hoping for a top 4 place, rather than knowing we should comfortably finish in it.

BaLennon I fully agree. We have to take it to the next level. At the minute we seem to be stuck in this mindset of replacing average with average.

And before anyone thinks I find Rose a bad player, I actually don't. But he's kinda like O'Hara, a decent player but never a regular first teamer.

Kinda worse for us Toda, we've gained average in Siggy n Dempsey since we sold better players.

I wouldn't even call Sigurdson average. I don't know what it is but I just do not rate him at all.

The truth is we have very good players already, players who have been integral in getting us in the top four twice before, and narrowly missing out another this time.

They need to be managed properly for one, and the need for another striker should have been identified by the coach in the Summer - he was in early enough.

Some of those good players who helped us get to the top 4 over the last few years have been sold - VDV, Corluka, Pavluychenko, Modric. Others have just been injured this season - BAE, Kaboul and Parker.

Players like Siggy, Huddlestone and Dempsey may be good players for teams without high expectations. Spurs do have high expectations but that's because we genuinely are that close to becoming top 2 challengers. But without quality additions to replace our average players, we will continue to hover about that 4th spot and no more.

I somewhat doubt he'd improve the squad... He literally has no pace to play in AVB's high line.

posted on 23/12/12

I think levy has no choice but to help avb strengthen the team with signings but i doubt levy will splash out. All the clubs around us are going to strengthen like chelsea, arsenal and even looks like Liverpool will to although i still don't consider liverpool top 4 challengers. My point being we will fall behind if we make the mistake we always do in the transfer windows.

AVB hasnt played the high line since september has he ?

We are nowhere near being top two challengers, not with our mid-table home form.

That was virtually a full-strength XI yesterday, with only Kaboul and Benny that would come in (and defending wasn't the problem).

Players going in the Sunmer keep getting mooted but the likes of Corluka and Pav people couldn't wait to get rid of in the Summer. Even Rafa had his critics.

People keep saying Dembele being injured was the reason we didn't play well, now he's back (and as good as Modric apparently). We also have a much better keeper according to most, an excellent young CB has come back and we have Vertonghen too. We are hardly bare bones.

Siggy, Dempsey, Hudd, Walker are good players that are suffering from the tactics. The whole team is suffering from them at home

hrh - i agree about pav, and even rafa, but i believe your comment about charlie is groundless. noone wanted him out.

posted on 23/12/12

and hudd suffering from the tactics ? you;re having a laugh. it wasnt the tactics which made him gift arsenal 2 goals on a plate !

The high line is paper talk guys

Last year at home we played what is known as the high line. In fact the defensive line was the furthest up the field than any team in the league. Higher statistically than avbs Chelsea.

How we play now is almost completely different....

When we counter or attack we switch to a 4-3-3 system with the defenders pushing further up the pitch (not as high as last year)

When we are defending we switch to a fluid 4-5-1 every man behind the ball and the defensive line drops deep to compact the space (hence so many late goals!)

Corluka simply isn't quick enough for the PL. Would be good cover, but there's a reason we sold him. Clearly not happy being on bench all season, Walker will always be first choice. 50k pw saved. Same with Niko, he coukdnt get in the squad.

I only want Llorente. Think he's be perfect gor us.
