He climbs out of a small window pretty quick
Considering he was brought to replace Steinsson. He is no better. He is part of a terrible defence. Whether one goal comes from his side is irrelevant. He is poor going forward and defending is done as a unit.
I think you have to take the opinions of the large number of people who watch him regularly give the ball away put us under pressure. They also watch him get to the by line rarely delivering anything that can be classed as a decent ball. He may have had a decent game yesterday like many others but there have been no players in this squad who can currently claim to be better than average. Even Eagles who Watson fire at the start of the season has shown why he has not cut it at the top level as he is totally inconsistent.
If you go to the majority of games it is fairly clear he is a bad player. He couldn't care less about bwfc lets be honest. The basics seem to be something he cannot grasp. Going forward yes he has pace but that is really it. Bad touch, I think his positioning is no better than steinsson, his passing is terrible for a pro footy player, 90% of the time he will pass back. Burnley away was one of the worse perfomances I have seen.
Normally I rate your posts HH. Please tell me this is a wum?
Primarily his job is to defend. How often is he beaten by a man or is a goal his fault? I take the point of defending as a unit, however, is it Mears fault that crosses from the right flank have been scored by strikers who Zat Knight was marking poorly.
I don't think Mears is that great going forward, he isn't as good as Steinsson or Ricketts, but he is much much better defensively. People don't get past him.
He gives the ball away far too much. I would rather have someone with better control especially going forward like Ricketts or even Alonso. Crosses happen regardless of opponents but the pressure having a poor player like Mears puts on a defence is huge. I doubt he stops crosses as its not something I have noticed watching him and I suppose you have to give credit to the centre backs for defending them.
Not a single defender at this club could complain if they are sold or dropped for someone else. None of them have been good enough! I would be happy to see 4 new defenders brought in. We have never defended well when Mears has played so I seriously doubt you will find much support in your defence of Mears.
Im just interested to hear peoples views. Im not proposing he is a superstar.
But whenever ive seen him play, ive always thought, solid.
People dont get past him, and first and foremost, thats his job.
Yeah, going forward he offers less than other players...but id rather have a full back who does his job and stops players getting into the area, or crossing, than getting forward too much and ignoring his original responsibility.
If he was constantly at fault for goals like Steinsson or Robinson were last year, then fair enough, but he isnt imo.
Last few times I've seen him he's been solid defensively and useful going forwards. He doesn't always know when to overlap his winger or when to hang back, but for the most part he's been decent in recent games.
I suppose he deserves a special mention for that cross yesterday. Brilliant. Perfect for our new striker, Alonso. What a header.
I like Alonso but his distinct lack of pace worries me at full back. Last season he gave a far worse display at Fulham than I ever saw Robinson give. His size might make him an option at CB?
This article seems like a bit of a knee jerk reaction to what was admittedly a very good performance from him yesterday. It's very easy to forget how poor someone has been in the past in the feel-good atmosphere following a win like yesterday's. Darren Pratley also had a really good game yesterday, but that's not going to provoke anyone into making an article questioning why we ever doubted him.
zat knight is the real problem with this defence jimmy phillips knew it and i thnk df knows it now.all bets are off for me regarding other defenders until knight is dropped.
Zigic out jumped him for the goal yesterday (well maybe not out jumped). He's not been to bad defensively but that is in part to there being a complete lack of pacey/tricky left sided wingers in the Championship. Passing is poor bordering on woeful and yesterday was probably the first time he has put anything like a decent cross in (Alonso made it look better by attacking the ball).
Was glad to see Joe Riley on the bench yesterday.
I wouldn't bet on that Mr. T.
Someone told me he was the best player in the championship when at Swansea.
Not a knee-jerk at all re: Mears.
Everytime ive seen him play i was happy with him...but always seemed to be so many who were quick to criticise him.
Alot of BWFC fans in general are quick to criticise certain players for giving it away...but i bet they ignored that KD gave it away 10+ times yesterday, whether it was due to a terrible first touch or a extremely poor pass.
The problem we have with SKD is that he is one of the few players we have that actually care about our club. He therefore leads by example in terms of the grit and effort that needs to be put in in this league. The downfall though is obviously that he is less than half the player he used to be.
Also, i dont think Alonso lacks pace...he is just the most chilled out player i have ever seen, he just glides and never pushes himself to a full sprint unless he absolutely needs to....but i've always liked Alonso, i thought he was fantastic yesterday. Truly Superb. He is like Ream in the fact that i think they are good footballers, but they were not used to the rough and tumble side of the game, both being young, inexperienced and coming from less physical nations.
Im not sure how much of his effort makes up for the fact he is a horrendous footballer. It makes up for it, but i feel if KD hadnt been at the club for 10 years, he wouldnt get the praise he does.
Did you see who played the pass to put through CYL yesterday. I would rather he gave away the ball ten times and plays the ball for the winning goal.
Alonso is slow. Dress it up how you like Burke beat him many times yesterday.
You're talking some absolute garbage in this thread, HH. On what planet is Kevin Davies is "an horrendous footballer?" He was fantastic yesterday. He has been our best striker this season. He is a legend at our football club. Go and WUM on a rival team board, your views are really ill-informed and irritating to me, quite honestly.
PS If you can't see why Mears is having a bad season and attracting criticism for his performances, you know nothing about football.
Mr. T I agree with your comments about SKD. I actually feel sorry for him in that he should be allowed to phase himself out slowly at 36. It's embarrassing that our so called younger strikers aren't able to oust him. We shouldn't have to rely on him. Asking a 36 year old to run for 90 mins up front on his own is harsh. SKD will do it because he is that type of guy.
Is he? Oh well makes little difference in the sentiment of what I am saying!
