Think we need more than 1 striker to be honest.. Where's the creativity going to come from?
I'd forget Mellor too - he ain't gonna sign now.
It does make you wonder whether we should have kept hold of Heff, at least until the loan market opened up. I know he hardly ever featured and would probably have been on his way regardless, but at least we'd have had another forward ready to come on. Perhaps we were banking on getting Mellor and thought we might as well let Heff go, who knows.
UP THE OWLS!!!!
owlstom
I'd have sooner kept Heffernan and ditched Clinton Morrison.
Thinking about the players we've lot go.. They scored around 35 goals and we've not really replaced any of them so we need to find those goals just to finish in the same place you'd think. I'm being rather negative but I just think it's extremely worrying.
Someone made a good point yesterday about Mellor. Yes he may be being greedy with regards to money and we certainly don't want to be bankrupting ourselves for an at best decent Championship standard striker. But if the difference in wages offered to required was £1000 - £2000 then I'd stump it up, if it's not then end this wild goose chase now as it's getting us nowhere.
UP THE OWLS!!!!

Think that was me! Also worth considering is that if he signs for us it weakens one of our rivals - assuming we're gonna be anywhere near the top this season....
Reports are saying we fielded an under strength side last night to give some players who have not featured much in pre season a chance. The way I see the line up is that the team last night given a few suspensions and injuries could well be our starting 11.
Slightly worrying me thinks,
We do need a couple of strikers but we don't want to be panicked into betting the farm on Jeffers MkII. Personally I'm ambivalent about Meggy but I'm going to at least wait until we're hovering above the relegation zone in November before I start booing.
Suffering - will it continue
Yep, my thoughts also. If Madine gets injured we're ducked.
Dunno what's going on behind the scenes but it's a bit of a joke to be honest.
Mike Oxlong
Won't be booing at all - hence why I'm venting on here. Can't see us being near the drop zone, purely cos there's enough inept outfits to take points off. Mid-table mediocrity beckons.
Good point then Taut
Suffering, I agree mate. Some people have said not to get overly worried about pre season friendlies, and yes to an extent I can agree with that. However, if you are going to have a barnstorming pre season and get excited about that, then the opposite has to ring true if things go a little awry.
I'm under no illusions that the side I saw last night will not be our starting 11, but there was enough first teamers on show to warrant a better response. I know it was a different line up, but to go from playing as we did on Saturday against a far better side than last nights opponents to the display at Jokewell, is a slight cause for concern, especially if those on show last night were plan b.
UP THE OWLS!!!!
I'm not one of these JOC-haters but recognise he's not a good player so you have to question why he was offered a new contract. Megson seems to want to keep and sign battlers, which is all well and good but where's the good players we'll need to get goals and get us up?
I think the league is a lower standard this season but if you look at Brighton and Southampton's teams last year compared to ours you can only say we'er miles away from that standard.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Amen brother.
Everyone agrees then. Guess I should shut up.
Just a bit depressing. Wish we'd sign some younger players like Brunt, Whelan etc who will be proper Wednesday players and not just bods to fill the shirts for a season before moving on.
Apparently Megson has said we've bid for 2 Premiership players. One a youngster on loan & the other a fringe player on a permanent deal.
Who, I don't know!
BTW, nice to hear that we need a couple of new players. Someone should have said sommat earlier!
Wish people would forget about Mellor, if he wanted to play for us and if he loves us that much then he would've signed more or less after last season finished, he's only after a big wage and is holding out for a Championship team, surely we should only want players that are wanting to play for the shirt and not just to pick up a big wage, we've had too too many of those over the years, you get players taking wage cuts just so they can play either first team footy or to play for the club they love or both and where is he? Still sat at home in Preston counting his wages dreaming of bigger wages at a Championship team, sorry guys but I dont want him back if its money that he is bothered about, yes I understand that its a job to them, granted, but for the amount of doller they earn they shouldnt give two hoots about 1 or 2k drop in wages. If he loves us that much he would've signed e-ons ago!
Regarding lack of activity up top and on wings, yes I was a little suprised Meggy decided to go out for another defender, fair play there may be good cover in defence now but you would think that he would have concentrated on bringig in a couple of attacking players, just shows that he is very defence orientated, which is a good thing in a way coz the midfeild and defence needed sorting out badly after last season but having letting Heff & Teale go you would have thought that we would have signed their replacements by now
So Mellor's holding out for the best deal he can get at the highest level he can get it........so what??
Who do we think we are?? We'll be expecting players to pay us for the privilege of wearing our shirt next!
Yes, it's disappointing we haven't completed the deal yet (for whatever reason) but seriously why such venom towards a player for doing what (probably) any employed person in the country would do!
The other thing being of course that we have no real idea what has actually gone on!
All i was saying mate was that if he really wanted to play for us then he would have signed by now plus with the money he gets already surely money would not have been an issue either for him, look at JOC yes he's by far the worst player we have but at least money isnt an issue with him as he took a "significant" drop in wages to carry on playing for us, i'll say that about him at least. No ill feeling towards Mellor as such if he wants to play at a higher level for more money then good luck to him but Im just saying that I want players who want to play for Wednesday and not those who dont look intrested but still take a decent wage home with them
That's the issue though isn't it, why would players WANT to play for us ahead of clubs at a higher level??
If nothing materielises for him at a higher level then he might be quite willing to take the hit in wages to play for us.
We don't know what's gone on, we don't know if it's money orientated or standard of football orientated but we criticise him for it anyway!
It just seems the same old deluded 'We are SWFC, we are massive & everyone should want to play for us for nowt' attitude (that's a general view not aimed solely at you) & it's been a problem for years!
tbh I think JoC had a choice between 3k a week with us, 50 quid a game and washing the team kit with Elgin or retirement.
Mellor can do what he likes. Bottom line is 1k might not sound much but over the course of the year that buys A LOT of pies!
We should have had a backup plan in case of him not coming/getting injured/whatever.
Mighty Milan..
Think you're being a bit naive mate. O'Connor would've left if he could get a better deal elsewhere and Mellor would almost certainly be taking a pay cut if he signs for us.
I'm all for players wanting to play for clubs and I'm sure some do but the bottom line is they are professionals and do it for the cash.
I dont think for a second that players should play for "high & mighty" Sheffield Wednesday for diddly squat, and I dont regard us as a world class club or a massive club, yes we have a big stadium but thats about it, look at our infrastructure & the way we was run over that last 10-15 years, its been amaturish. these players have to earn a living and yes your right why should they choose us over a Championship team I agree with that. Just saying that if he loved us as much as he said he would then he would have signed before now, unless a Championship team came in earlier and yes he would have chosen them over us which you can understand coz he is a championship quality player in my eyes. If we was promoted last season then then he wouldnt have hesitated in playing for us, probably right club at the wrong time for him eh...
Mighty Milan..
Just comes down to money and as much as I hate to agree with i_monster - alot of what we think about his wages and motivations is down to press talk; we don't know the full story.
True about JOC i guess, who else would want to sign him? Think we offered a low wage to him as Meggy hopefully see's him as a bit part player next season if we are very short on Midfeilders <fingerscrossed>
"and as much as I hate to agree with i_monster"

Taut, so you had Brighton down as run away winners of L1 this time last year did you
