I'm well impressed with cape verde

You shouldn't be surprised pp, I told the Arsenal board to look out for them over a year ago.

yeh, i remember!
They don't have that african swagger but it's better than the so called 'big guns"

I didn't even know the Cape Verde islands were African until this tournament, assumed they were part of Portugal/Spain

Blue Kenyan
even i know that!

They basically have to fight with Portugal for their players, which is a bit harsh on them considering the population of the islands.

Most of their players play, or came through, the Portugese leagues.

posted on 23/1/13

those players wouldn't likely get chosen to play for portugal anyway!

pp

Nani comes from Cape Verde doesn't he? Talented player, maybe their recent improvement will attract more players to play for them.

Yeah, but they have lost a few to them over the last few years. Manuel Fernandes, Varela etc. Even Vieira and Henrik Larsson could have played for the Verde!

Yeah Nani could have played for them, think he was born on the islands.

Henrik larsson? what viera are you talking about?

posted on 23/1/13

Patrick Vieira.

Yes, Larsson the Swede who played for United and Celtic.

posted on 23/1/13

That's a great group of players for such a small country, though I guess most of them only have roots there rather than grew up there (bar Nani).

posted on 23/1/13

what have they got to do with Cape verde?

posted on 23/1/13

Vieira's mum is Verdian and Larssons dad also.

posted on 23/1/13

Coincidently both those players go by their mothers maiden name rather than their fathers surname.

Dull fact time

oh wow!! never knew that.

Going to try and avoid the Arsenal score until 1030 when the highlights are on... which means not watching Chelsea v Swansea or being on here... Don't think I will make it, especially as 2 of my brothers are WHU and they are sure to text me.

Having a search around, Jorge Andrade (former Porto and Deportivo CB), Rolando, Gelson Fernandes, and Luc Castaignos could all also play for them
