He has one of the worst squads in the league and continually keeps them up, the guy is a class manager.

They've had all their defenders injured at some point or another too.

bruce had nzogbia at his best and rodallega

Didn't he have Valencia too?

Him and his team are pure garbage. They belong in the bummy lower leagues where only racists and losers care. Dude only gets props because suckas like underdogs. But underdogs are always wack. Thus the reason why suckas like them. They relate. It make them feel better.

Anybody with half a brain would just support a better team. Wigan fans are some dumb people swear down. Martinez is a horrible manager. Just horrible. Real talk.

It's a good point. He's an decent manager but I don't think he's as special as people make out.

You have to ask yourself why he's got so many crap players when he signs them? I know he hasn't got that much money but signing good players for your team is a sign of a good manager, even without huge funds.

And Palacios when he was actually good!

OP, you are I obviously disagree on what constitutes talent. I think the Wigan squad is, with the possible exception of Reading, the worst in the division. Martinez does a fine job and I would be very interested to see how he does if and when he gets a club with cash and ambition.

I remember when we were looking for a new manager and it came to a shootout between Martinez and Rodgers.

I thought it was strange that people claimed that Rodgers just piggybacked on Martinez's work, when Swansea comfortably outperformed Wigan last season despite Wigan being in the Prem for a number of years (and, as ttliv says, being more comfortable under Bruce than under Martinez). The idea that Martinez's work at Swansea was so good that it outlasted his work at Wigan and allowed him to be outperformed by an inferior manager only promoted from the C'ship is a bit ridiculous.

I think Martinez has some good ideas, but there's no doubting that he struggles to get consistency from his Wigan. They have some good players, but they really are a rabble for much of the season.

he basically started swansea off on their current journey aswell, he changed the footballing philosphy of the club

Wigan's team probably cost more than mine, but I think he's still a good manager.

If McDermott keeps Reading up then it will be as good an achievement, if not better.

People say Wigan hasn't got any money but when you think about it, they've had the best part of 6 years in the top flight which helps bring in all kinds of revenue. They should be averaging about 60ish mill a year and with wages of players probably the lowest in the top 17. Where's the money going?

They have one of the smallest stadiums and they also charge the lowest prices, I think, so they are at a disadvantage there.

If his name was Robert Martin he'd have been sacked years ago.
So relieved he turned us down in the summer.

Where's the money going?

That's a good question, especially when you think they've had cash on selling the likes of Valencia, Palacios and N'Zogbia.

Fletch - maybe he is responsible for the signings but he's not exactly had the means to fight for top talent. He basically relies on cheap buys and good loan deals. One of those loans I believe benefited both Cleverley and United.

and hopefully young henriquez as well, looks a quality young player

posted on 19/1/13

Why would he have been sacked if that was his name?

Wigan's expectation is to stay in the league- he achieves that every year, they have no reason to sack him?

Most managers that have departed Wigan have done so on their own accord, they haven't been sacked.

only chris hutchins has been sacked

Exactly, and he is awful.

It's true about where the money is going. Sold Moses as well.

Sterling, yes, but there's been other clubs that have been in a similar position and not signed as much crap as what he has.

Quite possibly. You'd have to ask yourself would Ferguson send highly rated players to a manger if he didn't rate him to aid their development.

exactly sterling

Fletch, well I guess this is a bit of a circular argument - is he rubbish for signing crap players or a genius for keeping them up with those players?!

posted on 19/1/13

They probably have a lot of debt (loan from Whelan?), and their gate receipts will be significantly lower than everyone else.

posted on 19/1/13

True. I don't think he's a rubbish manager, he's pretty decent, just not the miracle worker people make out. Which I guess was the point of the article.
