Bob we seriously need to give Sammon a rest!! I've watched him and watched him, and he's not improved.
Look at yesterday's match, he didn't win one header against their two centre halves, it was embarrassing. Further more, most of the travelling 3,000 fans were disgusted with his ability of trying to be a striker. Fans were even arguing between themselves about him in the stands.
If I was Nigel Clough, I would get rid.
In my opinion he's not good enough for the championship, league one maybe, but not the championship.
I've watched football for a long time in my life. And I can't believe that some fans think Sammon is poor. He looks good to me compared to other strikers/target men we have tried.
He's not an out and out goal scorer but he has scored a few. But he's strong, tall and quick and very hard working. He gives all defenders a very hard time and creates opportunities for other players. Now, with Ward fit and on form it's a brilliant partnership.
We'd be mad to disband this pairing. Trappatoni also rates him
He reminds me of the role John O'Hare once had with Kevin Hector picking up the pieces.
I agree with you totally Wassa. Not good enough, end of. He's not going to 'get rid' though I imagine. That would mean admission that Clough's judgement (and the price we paid) was wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if Sammons shortcomings are actually starting to affect team morale. I've already seen signs of this on the pitch. Has he scored away from home yet? Don't think so.
Why did we let Tyson go, limiting options? I can only assume its his wages? Indeed it begs the question why did we bother signing him?
Some striking options/alternatives are definitely required on loan though, Bob. It would be great to see.
No idea on loans but good info CapnBob.
Interesting comments above on Sammon. Not sure myself, seen a lot worse at Derby, but rated by a lot of Sheffield Wednesday fans. http://www.owlstalk.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic/189895-conor-sammon/
Love football and they way one person can have one opinion and another the complete opposite.
Wednesday fans were also quite complimentary about DCFC.
Thanks everyone for their comments,
Football's about opinions, I probably lean more towards Ramdini's view regarding Sammon. I'd also say that the Huddersfield fans last week were fairly complimentary about CS.
We could definitely do with more options up front & at the back though.
Not happy about the comparison with John O'Hare.
Solly scored his fair share of goals, but his strength was that one touch - just one - killed the ball stone dead. He could cushion the ball with foot, calf, knee, thigh, chest - it didn't matter how the ball came to him. If John could reach it, then it WAS his - and Hector was the perfect foil.
He was nicknamed Solly because people reckoned that his was as skilful as Luis Del Sol Cascajares.
Brian Clough famously said that if he became manager of Nottingham Pork Butchers, the first person he would sign would be John O'Hare. He did - and he was.
Alan Judge aka 'The Irish Messi'
There could be legs in this one Capn and the Bavies swap certainly sounds plausible.
Oh, and Sammon IN... does a valuable job for the team, and Wardy seems to thrive playing alongside him.
Sammon, a poor man's O'Hare perhaps, but that's still better than we've had in a long time. I think wassa's started a campaign to get rid of him!
Ramdini, you don't do yourself any favours going over the top about Sammon. I appreciate some supporters do rate him but nobody would ever use adjectives like 'brilliant', albeit you were talking about his partnership with Ward.
In my opinion Davies and Hulse were far superior footballers and scored the goals as well. We didn't get £1.2 million for either of those players.
If we can recoup around £750k in the summer I would cut our losses and try again.
Also we are 'monitoring' Jacques Maghoma at Burton, according to The Football League Paper - another out of contract at the end of the season. Flair player in midfield, not really Nigel's kind of guy I wouldn't have thought so probably just an agent-fuelled story.
Somebody should start some sort of Mill for Rumours, in my humble opinion...
We've moved on now from Burton players surely?
Would be happy with Simeon Jackson

Simeon Jackson would be good, though, if he were available, I'd imagine there would be a long queue of Championship clubs after him chris!
Simeon Jackson is the one doing the rounds that I've heard.
Somebody mentioned keeping Tyson, he's done well as an impact sub but the games he has started he's not exactly taken his opportunities. Add to that he goes on loan and the injury jinx reoccurs. If he was cheap great to have as a sub but he earns a decent wage.
I'll think about the possible players but we need a defender, we're leaky at the back. Upson would have been ideal short term. A winger to cover Coutts, Townsend (Spurs to QPR on loan) looks quality for this division.
A striker - I can't not see Theo returning to the first team or pushing Sammon. If we could get somebody with more quality than Theo to push Sammon that would be as masterstroke by Clough, but I can't see that coming.
Could we not look at players in the Swedish league? They would be cheap and not struggle to adapt. Or possibly from the Belgium league. The quality of the players is improving, surely we could find a gem in the lower leagues?
dcfcChris and OOE. I understand what you are saying and I was trying a bit to compensate/cancel out too many adverse comments about Sammon. And yes it is the partnership with Ward that is brilliant.
OOE is quite right too in that O'Hare had a far better first touch. And that is where Sammon is at his weakest. 7 times out of ten his first touch is not good.
But he does have his qualities and they are of strength. speed, hard work and he is tall. He does give defenders a very difficult time.
Unfortunately we aren't currently in the John O'Hare price bracket
Oh and I also wanted to point out to Chris - 1. Steve Davies wanted out whatever for some mysterious reason and was at the end of his . Also Hulse had such a short time to go on his contract. It's the price of present football contract law.
But Hulse did little or nothing at QPR and is now trying at Milwall.
I'm going to give this article one star because it's a blatant rip-off of my seminal "The Mill of Rumours" article.
Jackson and Judge both good shouts.
Left back? Luke Garbutt at Everton has been linked in the past along with Robinson at Liverpool. I don't think Robinson will be allowed out but Garbutt is possible.
Waghorn seems to be perennially rumoured with us and it's doing the rounds again. I would have thought Leicester will want to keep all their strikers availalble for their run-in so unless they also get a loanee surely this is a non-starter. Maybe in the summer.
Capn out.

Mo I've been watching Derby County for a hell of a long time. First game 1971. I've said that before on here.
After watching Sammon for the time he's been here, he is not improving and is not good enough for Derby County.
This is the first time I have questioned him. He couldn't even win a single header against average centre halves. I'll give him his due, his work rate is fantastic, and that's why Nigel brought him, so he's doing his job that way, but we brought him to score goals. You've got to be in the area to score goals, or at least try and hold the ball up for mid field, but he does neither.
Lastly, Jake Buxton, I'll say again, hearts in the right place, good pro, but not good enough at this level.
It would be interesting to see how many clean sheets we've had since he's been in the side. He's already told us he can't head a ball.
"but we brought him to score goals"
That isn't actually what Clough has said, Wassa, he has said that he isn't an out-and-out goalscorer but that he is in the team to do a job for the team. He has scored a few goals, more than either Cox or Blackstock down the road I think, and with Ward alongside it seems to work pretty well.
About 9 years ago, we singed a player on a short term deal, he was Spanish, and useless. I used to wind WASSA up in the pub by telling him that this player was brilliant. His assumed name was MANEL.
Manel was twice the player that Sammon is!
Yeah, but don't you think Gary Johnson is a great manager, Mostyn?
