What possible connection do they have?

TRFC - In all seriousness I've wondered that myself.

I think if you look at the history of United, yes we were founded for the Irish immigrant population as an alternative to the "establishment" club of Dundee FC but we did quickly move away from that, particularly after the club nearly went broke and then we became Dundee United in the early 20s. We kind of broke away from our Irish roots at that point with the new name, new club colours (white shirts, black shorts to replace the traditional Irish colours) and a new attitude I guess.

I think more importantly there wasn't the same need for an "irish" club for the community in the east coast as there was in the west. Bigotry wasn't as much of an issue here and discrimination wasn't as prevalent. I would imagine the immigrant population of Dundee and Edinburgh perhaps integrated into the existing community better than they did in the Glasgow and surrounding areas?

They all did at one time but they all got grief over it, guess for some it was easier to conform than than confront

I hate Hearts far more than I ever did your old club

In the name of sporting integrity I say let the clubs vote just as they did with your new club.

Then we will see if the TheHearts chariman starts a no one likes us we don't care campaign

I would imagine celtic have more fans travelling from ireland to watch the club play than hibs or dundee united ever did.

Always see a tri colour or two at most EPL games every weekend, funny there isnt the same issue down there

Whats your source for all this Ivan?

Since we're on this topic, one of the things I've never really understood is why the people of Ireland have embraced Celtic football club so fully. It is after all a club playing in another country.

Like say there was a club playing in Holland that was founded by Scots and embraced it's Scottish roots, I'd maybe pay attention to them and look out for their results, but there is no way I'd be getting the ferry over to Holland every weekend to go and watch them. I know the situation over here is maybe a bit different what with folk having family and whatever here, but still I don't get why there is such a massive connection between Celtic and the Irish people who have never lived in Scotland.

Anybody able to shed some light? And this isn't a wum or anything, just a genuine question.

Think had Celtic not become such a big club it would have went along the lines you suggested. After all there are many clubs world wide established by Scots who no longer hold any link outwith obscure refferences within their history

Also I want to say that I don't want any other club in Scotland to go through what my club went through.

When the Rangers situation was at its most frenzied there were plenty of Rangers fans on her and on phone ins saying they hoped SPL clubs would go out of business. Many Celtic fans on here gave them stick for their view saying that was a terrible thought process etc

Any time the suggestion Hearts could go out of business (and Killie to a certain extent) there are some Celtic fans almost slavering at the prospect.

Why is it not acceptable for Rangers fans to have hoped for SPL clubs to go out of business but ok for some Celtic fans to wish Hearts to go out of business?
