gears of war 2 - hadnt heard of it but my 1st 360 died...wifey got me a new one a suprise this what part of a game bundle very enjoyable
Splinter Cell. All the games I'd played prior were either sports sims or naff platform games. A mate lent me his when I first got a PS2 as I only bought the console and had nothing to play. I was hooked from the start. I still go back and complete it every couple of years for nostalgia.
It was the catalyst that stopped me playing nothing but Championship Manager and launched my gaming 'career' in earnest.
Prince of Persia, the first 3D one.
A mate gave it to me claiming it was terrible but I got really into it.
Arkham Asylum - All superhero/batman games were pash up till this so expected more of the same.
Virtua Fighter
Virtua Racing
Most don't remember but they both started on the 32x add-on for the Sega GENESIS and arcade. One spawned many sequels and is still amazing. The other introduced 3D gaming into households. Both looked like utter crap but the amount of pixels and playability were unreal at the time.
Many if these games are not underrated tho! Splinter cell was critically acclaimed.
Enslaved is a game which will I will never forget for as long as I live. The story wipes the floor with anything I've EVER PLAYED. One of those games where if I win the lottery I would fund the sequel it deserves. Simply stunning game production.

I'll mention pretty old -yet supreme- games:
Friday 13th
Footballer of the Year
International team sports
These were C64 games. Flawless stuff.
Vandal Hearts on the Playstation 1
I rented that game from Choices (remember them) and was just blown away by it. Never completed it and I just couldn't find a copy anywhere in the shops until some time later when I saw it in a store in France and bought it.
Never expected it to be so good yet story wise it was fantastic and it was just so damn enjoyable to play.
Its still one of my all time favourite games, mainly because it surprised me so much
-the warriors
-007 nightfire
-kane and lynch 1&2
-freedom fighters
-dungeon siege III
-battlefield bad company 2 - it's superior to 3 imho !
theres probably some more
army of 2 maybe?
with OP on Enslaved.
Stunning game with great gameplay and amazingly vibrant environments.
Its a shame, it really didn't get the sales it deserved.
A couple other underrated games: Silent Bomber and Fear Effect on PS1.
Different styles of game, both brilliant.
I always liked Resistance: Fall of man even though it got poor reviews and was generally expected to be horrible.
