Yes, Thierry killed Wrights legacy. Plus, as you say, his personality pushed him further back in our minds.

Also worth noting that when we signed him we had just won the league title. By 97/98 he was a bit part player, replaced by the likes of Vieira, Bergkamp and Overmars in our hearts.
Wright even managed to miss the Cup Winners Cup final success.

Time only remembers the winners when you have the success we had before and after Wright. Cesc will go the same way once we start winning things.

I see your point D'Jeezus but I dont think you can compare it to the Cesc situation. Wright was our top over scorer and a scorer of great goals and through not fault of his own Cesc could never reach these hights while in a Arsenal shirt. I suppose it just having grown watching him as a kid he will always kind of be the man in my eyes (I try to ignore anything he says or does in the Sun or anthing the Sun says or does to be honest)

Thing is, Wright was our top scorer for less than a decade. We quickly found someone better, thus damaging Wrights legend.

If we win nothing of note for 10 - 15 years, the legend of Cesc will grow. People will lament over what could have been. However, if we do win a few trophies people will quickly forget Cesc.

Wright in many ways was the figure head of a poor Arsenal team. People tend to forget the poor teams and the players in it, once a team that wins doubles and goes through a season undefeated in the league takes over.

As for Ian Wright memories, his flicks over Matt Jackson (I think) then finish v Everton stands out. However the biggest memory I have of him was before he even signed for Arsenal, when he came off the bench in the 1990 FA Cup final to score 2 goals for Palace in their 3-3 draw with United.

Wright, Merson,Limpar - ah them was the days.
My favourite Ian Wright goal was against Everton.
Flicked it over the defenders head twice without the ball touching the ground, then lobbed Big Nev Southall.
What a moment.
I think it really is just a case that hes been eclipsed by Henry. It's a unique situation.
How many clubs sign their all time top goal-scorer the year after they get rid of their all time top goal-scorer?

Henry has not damaged Wright's record in the slightest. When you mention the Arsenal greats you have to mention Wright. The fact he left over 15 years ago has meant people have forgotten about him just like most members of the 97/98 team. How many people talk about petit? or Overmars nowadays? Not many.

I think it's because during the mid 1990s we were a pretty average team. 1993 we finished 10th in the league but we fon the league cup and FA Cup. 1994 we finished 4th and won the Cup Winners Cup. 1995 was a disaster ended up finishing 12th but around February- March there were 12 teams including us who were all in a relgeation battle. 1996 we finished 5th just about.

Disagree. People are always talking about the likes of Seaman, Adams, Keown, Dixon and Winterburn.
The difference? No-one has outshone them. Wright on the other hand has been eclipsed by Henry, so people forget him easier.

Alan Smith was the top scorer in 2 league title winning seasons, scored the winning goal in a European final (and what a goal it was) and yet is hardly ever mentioned in terms of a legend. I would put him above Wright.

How many people do you hear talking about Dixon and Winterburn? I've never heard them brought up in a convo and people only talk about Keown because of Match of the Day and other shows he goes on.

As I said Petit, Overmars, parlour, Winterburn even O'leary have all been forgotten.

I always hear people talk about Winterburn and Dixon.
And Parlour. Parlour has not been forgotten, he is often put forward as someone we could do with in the team.
Overmars forgotten? Well he was only here for a couple of years and got outdone by Pires.
Petit is another I hear being talked about a lot, despite his short spell at Arsenal.

Probably more to do with the fact that Wright has spent the last decade or so making a total nób of himself on various television shows.

Well this is going to turn into a debate on opinion not fact, one that neither of us can prove. You state you hear people talking about petit and Overmars and Parlour and I state that I don't. Just looking on these boards when people talk about ex-Arsenal players that we miss, Admas name is mentioned a lot as well as Campbell's. Vieira's name is probably the most mentioned but never do I hear anyone say we need Parlour back in the team or that the team misses the speed of Overmars. How many people do you hear talk about David o'leary? He has made the most appearances for Arsenal (722) yet he is a forgotten man. I expect most people don't even know he played for Arsenal.

People don't talk about Wright for the same reasons that Overmars is never spoken about or Winterburn or parlour or O'leary. That reason is that football moves on and people forget about players who played 15/20 years ago. Sol Campbell in my view is one of Arsenal's greatest defenders but in 10/15 years time he will be a forgotten man. Nothing to do with a better defender coming along but more to do with time.

That goal against Everton was something else to be sure.

For me his hat trick(s) against the Saints meant allot (only cause I come from Southampton). Also I remember him scoring a screamer from about 40yards but cant remember the game. I do remember he did not even celebrate as he was so shocked it went in.

A member for a day but I have been reading these boards for longer than 2 years. used to read when it was the old bbc 606 years ago.

This hasn't been here for 2 years.
And I also posted on BBC606. I have heard a lot of people talk about the players you mention...

To be fair lads, I doubt ja606 and the old 606 boards are that accurate a barometer of " real life ".
Depending on age, footballing taste etc of your regular contacts it's perfectly plausible that you have both had very different experiences when discussing ex players.
Personally, I know a lot of people who long for " that " back 5.
I also know a few younger lads who don't even remember Winterburn playing for us.
I would love to say Winterburn, Keown, Adams, Dixon, Bould and Seaman will be forever idolized ( and I know among my generation of fans they will be ) but younger fans have shorter memories and different idols.
I also know Arsenal ans adamant that Patrick Vieira was aworld class " DM " when playing for us, so, ya know ,memory is a tricky thing.

OK we can all p1ss as far as one another.

How about some more Ian Wright memorys. I wrote this to try and give us all something positive to think about for a little while.

why dont you post the full quote where I mention when it was the old bbc606.

But I think it is irrelevant who has been on these sites the longest anyway and is a bit of a childish argument.

Bets Ian Wright memory is him being in the Bot Bar in Belfast the night N Ireland beat England at Windsor.
He took some abuse that night I can tell you.

It is relevant when someone claims that people have or haven't said something over the years...

How about when he thought he'd broken the record for Arsenal and whipped off the shirt with the printed vest?
Hilarious.
But he got away with it - because it was Wrighty!!

I think your scraping the barel here. Have a quick search of the last 5 pages of the JA606 Arsenal board. Any mention of the players you talk about? Have a look through the last 10 pages, 20 pages etc etc. You might find the odd comment but it will not be the norm.
