Three years in league 1, appointing Mclaren with out discussing the job with him, Platt, Megson, Kinnier, Calderwood all played bigger roles.

At the end of the day ND made the mistakes. He was the one running the club. If fans turned against him after 12 years of being average at best that's his fault.

Cloughie was very unpopular in some circle, particularly because of his brash style of management and dealings with the media. This is why he never got the england job. This day and age it would be unthinkable for a Englishman with 2 European cups to his name not to be considered for the top job. Saying that it would be a miracle if an Englishman won anything these days. I would argue that Billy Davies can be compared to Brian Clough up to a point. Clough first two years at Forest were average at best. We didn't threaten the promotion places, whereas under BD, we made third place once, and achieved playoff places on both occasions. It wasn't until Cloughies third year that we went up, and we didn't storm the league either. Fortunately for us, third place was enough back then to gain promotion automatically. If we had sacked Cloughie after his 1st two full seasons, then BD would have the better CV by some distance.

It makes me laugh when people talk about Cloughie as some sort of saint, before anyone jumps down my throat: he was the greatest manager ever, to lead two clubs to league titles, especially two provincial clubs like us and Derby is amazing; to win back to back European Cups has only been done by one other English club and even Fergie despite having something like twenty attempts has only won it the same number of times as Cloughie who had four goes. However. I remember reading in a book that two of England's most influential players at the time (Keegan and Brooking) both said they could never play for him, he signed Gary Megson but I don't think even played him before getting rid, he had major bust ups with the boards at both Derby (when he actually resigned) and Forest regularly critisizing them in the papers and on tv and as for people talking about a manager losing the dressing room - well this certainly happened at Leeds, We took a huge gamble back then taking him on..
If anyone thinks I am bad-mouthing the great man, I am not but it makes me laugh when people say Billy has baggage but had attitudes been the same back then as in this day and age, after being sacked by Leeds most clubs in the top couple of divisions wouldn't have touched him with a bargepole.

Ilko, about the differing views on Billy between Derby, Preston and Forest fans. All three clubs would love to have been in the same position as we were in the game before he was sacked or left. Sometimes a manager and a club just go together and click, I don't know your marital status but I'm sure that whoever you are with now is not your first love. People do it all the time - go from one relationship to another - an sometimes they go back to a former partner, when one of them considers splitting up was a mistake, to have another go.
