No way should Tommy Bowe be going. Hasn't played for 2 months and unlikely to play many matches (if at all) before the trip to Oz.

it'll be a real shame if that is the case because he's a class player who had a phenomenal tour in SA.

im going to keep my fingers crossed that he gets a couple of games in before the squad's selected.

if he's not available, then id say either Cuthbert or browne (I like browne a lot tbh).

When's croft due back ?

Obviously this line up was just based on who had decent game at the weekend. There's a lot there that won't be going.

That's right JPB but also Hamilton as well.

He was class on Sunday but one brilliant game won't get him picked - there's too much quality at lock.

A lot depends on the opposition and combinations. 4 years ago was 3 of the most physical test matches I have ever seen. We needed physical leaders and enforcers (see shaw and o'connel). Australia don't quite pose that same threat, however they do have a fantastic running game.

We need to play to our strengths and target their weaknesses: the scrum. A big tight 5 to give them a hiding and give us lots of good front foot ball. I'd love big jim to go, been fantastic for Gloucester, and to partner him I'd go for parling.

The back row will be interesting, on form both wood and robshaw should be nailed on starters, however with Lydiate due to return as well as ferris, woody will face some tough competition. At 8? Headlip, Toby, Big Ben, all very good options. Heaslip isn't on top of his game, Morgan's injured, and Toby is putting in top performances on a weekly basis.

As for the backs? A reliable goal kicker, and some powerful runners outside of him. Roberts, tuilagi, north, curthbert, there isn't a lot that can stop that. We have four fantastic fullbacks to choose from, plus a handful of others waiting in the wings.

It really is getting tough to pick a 15

no doubt about that.

England's test matches out there last year were pretty intense too (although obv not to the same extent).

Btw, incredible that it's 4 years ago. When I look at clips from that series, it looks like it was last week to me.

Verminatori reckon ur spot on mate. Reference Ireland v Oz in the world cup last year. We just battered the be-jaysus out of them for 80 mins. No trys scored tho, but never was a tryless game so enjoyable especially since before the game the Oz commentators were laughing at us. And making cheap jokes before the kick off about the scoreboard reading 0-0 and that Ireland should enjoy being so close to them before its too late.

there's certainly a few dilemma's, tbh i'd take 1 or 2 players on the lions tour who havent even made their international debut's yet in christian wade and jonny may who should be playing for england instead of the hapless ashton

trying to think of lions tourists who hadn't played for their country.

tom wood and robshaw have to play IMO, wood is englands best player and robshaw is the most improved and also a fantastic captain

================

ive just wikigoogled it, and no, he was capped for England just before his first lions tour in 89.

I haven't wikigoogled my 3 above, but I think they were all lions tourists before getting a test cap.

One game against Romania doesn't count in my book. Might not have been a cap international anyway. But I take your point.

I was wrong about john Bentley and Jeremy Davidson.

will greenwood was uncapped however when he toured in 97

Apparently Guscott was selected for the Lions before the Romania game, but played before the tour.
