How do you know we didn't try for both those players but the clubs turned us down?

Journos, and I don't mean Metro before you start quoting them, can only print when they have two or more sources. But when you are reporting in the middle of a deal there are a lot of slip ups which means they don't get done. The only thing we learned from the Lacazette, Icardi, Higuain rumours was that Wenger was desperately looking for a striker. If the only one he could sign was almost a last choice says a lot about Wenger's ability to attract and actually sign a top player. If you think Lucas Perez was our first choice you must be nuts.

It is a myth that these days, so and so manager can attract X,Y, Z players.

Fees attract players, as simple as that. If Wenger was willing to pay the asking fees for any of them, they would have been in the red and white shirt.

Same, if Mourinho and United had "only" offered £50M for Pogba, it is likely that he would have been a Madrid player now.

Look at the number of intermediaries involved in football deals. Agent representing a player, agent representing the buying club, agent representing the selling club, advanced scouts, middle managers handling the finances, club administration and even doctors given advanced notice of possible medicals. There are a hell of a lot of people involved before you even get to the negotiating parties, managers and CEOs.

To an extent. But if you are planning a Pogba type signing you have to convince him to sign. A manager with some gravitas helps a lot in that. You have to wonder how much effort Wenger made to convince Vardy for example.

Yeah, but it was feckin Jamie vardy.
Big names who recently signed for us all said the same thing. Wenger called them directly.

Vardy probably received a call from Bould or the cleaner..
