Parents bought their house for 11k on a combined salary of 20k. Same house now worth 1m
That generation got hit with massive interest rates but there's no couple on a combined 2m a year looking to get the equivalent.
Studio flats going at 1500 a month to rent, no wonder young people not from London are struggling to settle here
----------------------------------------------------------------------
tbf I am charging 1500pm for a 2 bed flat in finchley. so its not that bad on rent side unless you want to live very near to the city.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Private landlords are also to blame J99
----------------------------------------------------------------------
market forces m8. but since all the brexit malarkey took off i haven't raised the rent in any of of my flats.
Finchley and anywhere north of that is awful if you're a woke warrior who doesn't drive like my good self
Three new apartment blocks went up near here last year.
When they were finished, there was a whole row of 'TO LET' signs outside. Not a single one for sale.
Housing crisis solved...

west finchley, woodside park, northern line less than 10 mins walking distance.
Finchley is well catered for those who like public transport or bikes. and its still green!

Aye the friggin bought in the planning stage by property funds.
Still all that has slowed drastically now. May actually see real price falls this year.

if someone is sitting on a £1m house and they are retired why wouldnt they just sell up and move to the country where you can buy a really nice house for £400k?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
you mean isolated, open to burglars and miles away from decent health care?
10min walk/ bus ride twice a day every day just to get to a station to take you somewhere
Long

Would think it was easier for burglars in cities and towns, than villages and places like what where Pete lives 'n that.

Everyone thinks they're gonna downsize when they get to retirement age, and that is their retirement income plan. But then they realise they are quite used to their house, where they have everything how they like/know it, quite used to their community neighbours, live near their friends - and moving house is a big hassle when you're in your 60s...what if you don't like your new neighbours, what if you don't have a good pub nearby, what if you can't get around anymore and there's no local transport?
That's why the equity release market has been doing very well recently. Turns out it's much harder to downsize than people think.

"open to burglars"
sorry, forgot this isnt an issue in london
----------------------------------------------------------------------
it is but they don't go on killing sprees unless you live near a council estate. and those with 1m+ houses don't tend to live near council estates.

pretty sure the police up here have a lot more "free time" to investigate burglary than police down in landaan who have a lot more issues on their hands
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nah they leave the druggies to it. Its why you hear abt so many stabbings. They know better than to get the middle and upper classes angry.
