We overpaid for Pepe and we would have overpaid for Zaha as well. Absolute no doubt.
Meh, who cares? Not our money.
That’s not the point. The point is Emery was not backed like Arteta
So Emery, a very experienced manager with proven track record (to a certain level at least) made less demands when he arrived than Arteta did?
Doesn't this indicate a lack of strength of character from Emery that meant it was never likely to work at Arsenal (or any other top European club).
Great that he's a 'nice' man. But he didn't even have the balls to choose his own captain...

Arsenal's spend on transfers and loan fees under Arteta, is approaching £200 million.
Players Arteta has chosen fill the spine - GK Ramsdale (coming soon), CB White & Gabriel, CM Partey, CAM Odegaard. Backed like this, he has to make it work. #AFC
-----------
Exactly my point.
Let's forget what happened last season and start from fresh.
Mikel, it is your time to deliver.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why wasn’t Emery, a far more accomplished and successful manager than Artitler, given this sort of backing?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We spent loads under Emery
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yea there’s a difference, Artitler has more of a day in transfers than Emery. We spent £100m in Emery’s 2nd season on Pepe who he didn’t want and Saliba who went on loan.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tierney
Luiz
Martinelli
Torreira
Leno
Sokratis
Gwen
Denis Suarez
He was backed plenty

Because he 'wasn't backed'? What manager comes in, cap in hand, and accepts that. We had an even worse squad then than we do now.

Emery arrived as head coach. His demands were noted but Raul did the buying.
Arteta's was made manager a season after being appointed as head coach.
2 summers for Emery 72m and 144m
2 summers for Arteta 76m and 107m
Compared for you thanks π
Would have wanted Emery to succeed at Arsenal. International experienced manager but his main problem was his communication. The EL final was the final nail in the coffin. Unfortunately. I liked him.

£100m on Pepe who he didn’t want and Saliba who went straight back on loan
Yeah bats, I'm with CEG on this. We spent a lot and brought in a lot of players under Emery.
And although he was doing well at the start of his tenure, the collapse from end of April 2019 all the way through to the debacle of the EL final which carried on into the next season (even after having had what most people at the time thought was a positive window) meant he needed to go.
Emery can't have any complaints really.

Exactly. I don't think we can compare Raul and Edu. One of them will bend over much easier than the other.
I mean, even Mourinho had to go along with what Levy wanted/could do.
I’m not saying we should have kept Emery. I was desperate for him to go long before he did. Probably long before most on here wanted him gone too. But there’s not denying that titler has been far more heavily backed and given far more control than Emery was

Exactly.
Emery was just a victim of a change of structure at the club, rather than someone that wasn't backed with transfers.
As I've said here plenty of times - and I find it remarkable people aren't questioning it more - last summer it was 'Emi or AMN if you want to sign Partey or Aouar', whilst this summer we can spend over £100m with only one significant player sale having been done.
Another shift in policy, or just KSE taking advantage of an ultra low interest rate loan deal?
