According to the Daily Star, Arsene Wenger was convinced to sign Welbeck by Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker.

The 23-year-old sealed a £16million deadline day switch to the Emirates but not before words of advice from the Gunners stars.

It is reported the pair - captain and vice-captain - met in Arsenal's training ground gym to discuss Welbeck before urging Wenger to make a bid.

Wenger said he was only available for loan in the morning. And only available on loan because they signed Falcao (who was going to Man City the day before).

Wenger doesn't sign loan players unless they have an option to buy. Obviously sometime during the day Man Utd agreed to sell him to Arsenal.

The rumours coming out on deadline day was that they agreed to sell because Welbeck insisted he was only interested in Arsenal and that on a permanent move.
