I think Welbeck is a decent player, but...
...he is no way a PL player, 12 goals or whatever it is in his first full season, fair enough! 2 goals in x amount next season screams that the player is a dud!
I am not sure positions played, but to be honest, if he was in my team, well basically he wouldn't be!
The penalty box is like kryptonite to Danny!
Wellbeck is a English player why would he be anywhere near as good as RVP?
No one is comparing him to RVP.
My point is no English player coming through at the moment could be considered to be coming close to being world class or even very good.
You either have it or not, he is still young and will become a very good player!
I am not talking about whether the player would be world class or not. I am asking (mainly other United fans) if Welbeck would be better than he is now if he was playing up front for us like he was last season. This season he has either played in midfield or on the wings more often than up front and only has two goals to show for it. Then we have posters thinking that 2 goals for a striker is poor return and forgetting or not knowing the fact that he has hardly played there.

3rd
How long would you give Welbeck to prove himself?
Is this not his third season in the first team? Seriously, if that was a player who was bought in, they would be gone by now!
Welbeck seems to be living off the fact that he was brought through the academy, not his fault, but he is patently not good enough at the moment! It's okay saying he scored x goals last season, but he should therefore progress from that, surely? He seems to have gone backwards imo!
He spent the season previous to last season at Sunderland. Don't see how this season can be counted as his 3rd for being in the United First team.
Actually it's not RVP's fault but Fergies. If he played Danny as a striker rather than a winger or wing forward, even with RVP at the club, he would score goals.
It really is that simple. Fergie is turning him to O'shea. Jack of all trades, master of none

I'm happy with Welbeck's development. He doesn't score prolifically at the moment due to largely playing on the wing and a lack of experience. However, he is a technically accomplished footballer with good vision of the game around him, strength and pace, and what seems to be a grounded and determined personality. He has also scored enough goals - technically difficult strikes and 'striker's finishes' - to demonstrate that the problem is consistency rather than ability. I'm confident he'll be a United player for many years.
I wouldn't say for the type of striker that he is that getting a bit of time out on the wing is bad for his development, it may even help him...
I remember MON played Abonglahor on the wings a bit to help his development (not that he's great or it worked brilliantly but he knows a little more about developing players than us lot)
Henry had a little spell as a winger, it didn't stop him becoming quite probably the best striker around at the time...
RVP isn't going to be around forever, if Welbeck is permanently pushed out of his favoured striking position then it will badly affect him but some time during his development playing other roles will not destroy him as a striker and may even improve him.
The witch hunt against Welbeck is getting ridiculous now. Seriously. I can't even be bothered debating it anymore. The people who understand football can see that Welbeck has huge potential. The people that watch United can see that he has started the majority of his on the wing (how many have Young, Valencia and Nani scored this year?). Any club bar City could only dream of having him as a 4th choice striker. Fact is he's played less games up front that Hernandez, Rooney and RvP. I literally can't be bothered trying to educate those who make blind criticism. His goal return is not comparanle to last yr, he's been playing on the wing and in midfield ffs!!!!
Hass he been playing well on the wing though? And when I say playing well, I mean is he a threat to the opposition? He works very hard, yes. But is there any tangible quality? When he gets the ball and attacks does he tend to create chances for himself or others? Not often enough imo.
And if he didn't come through our academy, we would not have rushed out and signed him.
merrysupersteve - I know you're a United fan but everytime I see your name I think you're a Liverpool fan...A bit like Maestro (who's name is similar to Metro a 'pool fan).

After sunderland were he was actually taught to be a striker and made the runs I just do not see now with him? He was a beast. Then he was 19, could play on the flanks and up front, built like a brick and packed with skills. We just paid 10 million for Zaha who has similar potential. The tendency to dismiss players because they are from our academy is way too high.
And if you watch his play from the flanks you notice a few things, he keeps possession of the ball, he can beat his man at all times and when he cuts in, his link up play is wonderful. It is not going to lead to the vaunted "assist" but it always opens up a chance.
I worry about fergies conintual rotation of him, and worry he is not getting the right instructions in training. At sunderland, he used to attack balls aerially, make runs to the near post, all the hallmarks of a good striker, these days, he halts his runs, does not come to the ball or attack it. I wonder if they know he is still a footballer learning his craft and needs to be taught.
Don't know about him scoring more goals but we definitely wouldn't be sitting on top of the league table.
To the user who made the comment about would we buy him.
We wouldn't have paid huge money for him but I certainly wouldn't be unhappy if we had bought him at some point. I am certain that if he didn't come through our academy but was available cheap and wanted to come to United we would have got him.
He is a very talented player for his age and I am more than happy to have him at United..
I just wish our 4th choice for every position was as good as Welbeck, that would be an immense squad.
Hass he been playing well on the wing though? And when I say playing well, I mean is he a threat to the opposition?

Yes, and yes.
He might not have scored the goals but the fact that he's been there to take the shots suggests he has been threatening. He's also been very good on the edge of the box; he might not have been attributed the direct assist but he is very often involved in the play leading to the goal. He makes fantastic runs that make space for the likes of RvP and Rooney to exploit.
How anyone can criticise him is beyond me.
He was our outstanding attacking threat against Madrid, especially in the first half of the OT game where they really couldn't deal with him.
What annoys most, is that all of this criticism has started after he delivered two of his best performances of the season against Madrid. It's almost as if fans want him to fail. All of a sudden we have the board clowns like Stretty and W&R seemingly taking the attitude that he isn't allowed to be a good player. If Hernandez had performed against Madrid how Welbeck did, they'd be queuing up to lick his balls.

I was not always his biggest fan but he is slowly winning me over, he's been much more of a threat down the wings this season than any of our recognised wingers including nani
