red are you for real? I don't actually think you are sitting there balling your eyes out. its just a phrase.

im mocking you for banging on about something where the answer has been explained to you a while back.

It wasn't a joke. I was deadly serious. As it happened I went for any team to win in extra time at 8/1 and lost, which I blame on you for not answering.

statman you copied the comment that sums it up. I didn't say at the world cup.

if I had then id agree.

but thanks for telling us what people mean. you have obviously surveyed the global population which is good of you.
-------------

Why would I need to do a survey to know what people mean when they talk about the World Cup? I'm old enough to draw upon my own experiences. If they are talking about qualifying, they say qualifying.

statman because you told me what other people think.

when people start using that to back their point up it usually means they don't have one.

you think what you think. but that doesn't change that what I said was factually correct.

it also doesn't change that the words I used were used at uni and everyone knew what the guy meant.

so it kinda makes your point redundant in terms of this thread don't you think

No I didn't. Which makes your last post redundant. Maybe try going back and reading what I did say.

Everyone one at Uni!! Everyone?? Now is that another ambiguous comment or a porkie???

statman you said you know what people mean.

its a was a statement telling us what people generally mean when they say something.

how would you know that?

red. did I say everyone at uni?

no.

theres a key difference in the sentence. the point being that everyone who knew about it i.e. the people that played in halls football with him, knew what he meant.

do you need every little thing explained for you or are you just desperately trying to find something you can argue successfully?

----------------

From how the discussion pans out? When it goes on to be about the World Cup rather than the World Cup qualifiers I know they meant the World Cup! It's a crazy system I know, but it seems to work for me.

so statman you are referring to the people you have spoken to only.

as am I.

so I don't know what sort of point you were making but it seems rather irrelevant don't you think.

Of course i am talking about people i have met. Do people really need to quantify that they are drawing upon their own experience every time they post on a message board?

Ive never met a person that has referred to a World Cup qualifier as a World Cup fixture. They always say its a qualifier. I think the point I am making is quite obvious.

When you write a sentence like this:

When people refer to the World Cup they are usually talking about the finals.

yes you do.

it sounded to me that you were making a general point rather than drawing on your own experience.

the point you are making is obvious. but given that every person who played football with the guy I am referring to knew exactly what he meant, clearly I don't agree with you.

and nor would he.

as I said before. I think part of it is down to the children on here too quick to react rather than read carefully.

several people have used the term 'at the world cup'. no wonder they are confused.

So what did you think I was using as a source of reference? A poll is carried out?

I've no idea what you are talking about when you say everyone that he played football with understood. I must have missed that part of the discussion or forgotten it.

I thought you were talking generally and effectively speaking for people that you have no right to.

if that's not what you were doing fine. but I think it was a fair assumption to make given your wording.

the guy is someone I knew at uni from halls football. he wasn't even good enough to get into the uni side so that's how little of a deal I am making of it.

no. im talking about the guy I knew that played in a world cup fixture.

I thought thats what you were referring to.

is any of this really worth dragging up? I have explained who I know, where from and what I meant by my statements.

just because of the children on here who thought I was lying doesn't mean I need to continually justify myself.

So someone at uni once said he played in a World Cup fixture? If that is all he said, how do you know it was only a qualifier? How would you know it wasn't the actual World Cup?

comment by Raj (U17528)

posted on 29/5/13

i was there when it all happened and he flew out so i knew it was a qualifier.

but in the years that followed when we talked about if people didn't know when they found out they didn't assume we meant finals.

maybe its just how it looks in writing rather than speech.

but i think its more likely that the children on here didn't stop to think because they thought they had something

comment by Elvis (U7425)

So how do you know that they didnt assume he/you meant finals? They must have asked, or not mentioned it? If they had to ask, you then referring to the game as a World Cup fixture was misleading. If they didnt ask, then you have no idea that then didnt assume it was a World Cup finals fixture.

Raj

Your story about people at uni knowing what he meant is bollox, as im sure when he was involved in the qualifiers it was obvious at the time the finals werent being played, but were us on here didnt know the full story hence you are being ambiguous

Exactly. They must have had extra info from the conversation. If they didn't how does Raj even know that they didn't assume it was a finals fixture.

That's the problem with making stuff up. When someone with half a brain analyses what you've said, it starts to unravel.

comment by Raj (U17528)

because statman as the conversation moved on it became obvious because of the country playing. they have never played in the finals.

but no one ever said they thought he meant finals. no one ever asked if it was a group game or knockout phase. etc etc etc.

why are you banging on and on looking for something that isn't there?

red if you read back I explained that im referring to the conversations in the years after.

do keep up.
