Away goal

It's just as fair a system as anything else.

Also, if the away goals rule hadn't stood, Bayern Munich would have played last night's game very differently. Knowing they would be through unless Arsenal scored three added to their complacency. Without the rule extending their cushion, they would have approached the game differently and I doubt Arsenal would have ended up with such a positive result.

is that it's still active when it goes to extra time

It's a clear advantage to one team to have an extra 30 minutes to score an away goal

The away goal itself isn't a problem unless you go out to it - hence the flurry of furious Arsenal fans asking for it to be banned. Why didn't they ask prior to kick off ?

Also, we have to remember that teams base their style of play and tactics around the away goal

I like away goals in the champions league. They add an extra tactical dimension to the ties. However...

It is a very difficult call to make, the extra time away goals rule. How do you compensate for a team having to play the extra 30minutes (and then potentially take penalties) at their oppositions home ground in front of a 80/20 support split without allowing them the away goals rule throughout all of the active play?

There's a just enough argument to say that, after 5 penalties each, away goals should count for those too.

The fact is that scoring 3 goals away from home is a better achievement than scoring 2 goals away from home. Thus if the scores are tied you should go through with more away goals.

This.

All this away goal talk is just a knee-jerk reaction from Arsenal fans, nothing was said before the match.

Arsenal went out because of how poorly they played at home.

And for those who say, it's a clear advantage to the away team to have an extra 30 minutes to score an away goal, should there be extra time, this also means that the home team have an extra 30 minutes of home advantage. I don't like the rule though. If 2 teams are level after 180 minutes of football, neither is more deserving of victory than the other.

It's a fairer way to decide a tie than pens.

I like the away goals rule. It's a good way to get away teams to come out and try to score rather than parking the bus.

To be honest I've always disliked the away goals rule, this stems from times United have drawn 0-0 away and 1-1 at home and gone out. I don't consider a team going through after those results to be deserving of it!

Previous posters have mentioned an advantage of playing at home, well I consider it to be a disadvantage considering anything conceded at home has double the consequences.

Teams can play away from home with a little more freedom feeling less anxious about conceding, I view playing away as an opportunity rather than a disadvantage, and I'd expect the top managers view it the same way!

NB, you get the home team parking the bus instead!

Always have said, that I don't see why their is a need to go into E.T with a blatent advantage.

90 minutes at their ground, 90 minutes at your ground with the away rule in effect. after the 180 minutes, it goes to penalties.

totally agree

The only thing I disagree with it, is that it's still active when it goes to extra time, giving the the away time extra time to score a goal which equals a goal and a half.
======================================

while that is true, you could conversely say that the home team gets the advantage of getting to play an extra 30 minutes and potentially penalties infront of their supporters
