Has Football Changed For Better Or Worse?

Whether or not football has become better/worse is subjective. Some aspects are the game are worse but there is no doubt in my mind that it is probably more exciting due to the coverage available now.

International football has gotten a lot worse from what it was 10 years ago, which is a massive shame as I used to be a country over club kinda guy.

Completely agree with this. I've kinda lost a lot of passion for the international side of football. Yes I still watch it, but it's different now... It's all about the big team fans booing their rival players, big name players not playing for the badge, throwing fits because next man slept with his wife. Go round his house, ffs and knock him out.

I used to love watching the international tournaments. Euro 96.. France 98, Euro 2000 Japan 2002. It all went a bit downhill then after that.

Football was a working mans game, I have always considered myself as a typical working man, a typical Chelsea fan (warts and all) and a typical football fan (warts and all).

Recent studies have said the old way of looking at classes is outdated and needs revising, that there are no longer the 3 classes I was used to growing up, Working, Middle and upper, but something like 7 and that most people do not sit in the Working class section as they used to. I took the test and found myself in the Established middle class bracket. Apparently the middle class bracket (okay there are a few sub catergories in this class) is the one most fit into these days, the working class is a minority.

I guess a lot hads changed and it isn't just football.

2002 WC was the best. I remember being in year 6 and we were allowed to watch the Brazil v England game in the morning at school. I believe all primary schools in the country did this. But we lost because of that goofy mug.

I have high hopes for the 2014 world cup, I am hoping to see a power shift back to south america... Although the Germans are looking strong this time round.

Easy credit for finance and housing etc has pushed every one up the class scale (and ultimately put us in this financial crisis).

there is an old saying that you get the friends you deserve....

I think football will get the fans it deserves eventually. It has become a monster created by many and will end up eating itself.

be interesting to see what can be made of the aftermath.

It may be nostalgia but I am old enough to remember the 82, 86 and 90 world cups... and the ones since have just not had the same feeling....

even watching Brazil has lost its old magic...

"hat there are no longer the 3 classes I was used to growing up, Working, Middle and upper, but something like 7 and that most people do not sit in the Working class section as they used to."

There have only ever been two "classes" for me.
Working. And ancestral/feudal wealth (monarchy, Duke of Westminster etc) .

If you work, you are "working" class.
The other lot by definition don't have to work.
Distinctions by education, earnings etc are long gone.
Only distinctions by social circles/protocols remain.

Agree lucas, chasing money all the time,at some point it will be pointless cos there's only so much to chase, cos as it stands most clubs are operating on massive debt.
It seems like it's just a merry go round to service debts.

I really hope it does eat itself because the beautiful thing about football is you don't need money. Kids will always play football in the streets all over the world and there will always be fans who want to watch football. Stuff like agents, Sky, corporate boxes, prawn sandwiches aren't actually needed to make football enjoyable.

Lucas - couldn't have put it better myself

I also blame people for creating forums for football fans to spout their biased opinions, and WUM type comments which is ruining the game.

Exactly, grouping/labelling things isn't necessary but then saying that I think everyone love making lists.

Player goes into the area, he's brought down and is awarded a penalty AND the defender is sent off. For me it's not a sending off just for being the last man, that means he's rewarded twice with the defending team punished twice, the game is as good as dead then

---------------------------------------------------------------

If a player doesn't get sent off for being the last man, it would open up a whole world of trouble.

football imo is a lot worse. the game is more enjoyable to watch with players being fitter and the game being faster etc but morally worse than it was comapred to the 70s and 80s. football managers get sacked after only a few bad results. chelsea sacking title winning managers due to not winning the european cup. mancini's job being talked about being on the line when they could finish 2nd and win the fa cup. short memories

even watching Brazil has lost its old magic...

-----------------------------

Has the internet not stifled this excitement.

I too thought something similar, but maybe it's not that Brazil have lost their magic, but we are seeing more of it from non-Brazilians on things Youtube etc.

Also more coverage of International football means the World Cup is not the only option to watch Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Holland, Italy etc.

Luis Suarez ruined world football.

I am slowly getting tired of football!

Every weekend we see great skill, great goals, great saves, and exciting moments!

Yet, all I read or hear about after the games is who said what to who, which tackle was worst, what did the crowd sing, who was abused, who felt abused etc etc..

Football used to be enjoyable, it used to be about goals and skill and saves, now it is all about who is offended, who is the worst offender, what is the newest offended bandwagon to jump on, it is not enjoyable anymore cos too many people are too offended by stuff that takes away from the actual football that has been played!

We have become soft as a nation, we find offense in every little incident and as such the game itself has become a sideshow, that is sad!

I have mixed feelings about football, I miss being able to afford to go to games but I like that I can watch my team every week.

So better or worse? Neither, just different.
