martinez says whelan was persuasive yet whelan was in the press nearly every day trying to flog him to liverpool.

because i that very same article, martinez claims whelan was very persuasive in keeping him there, yet whelan popped up at every opportunity on sky sports to say how good martinez would be for liverpool etc etc
at no point was martinez offered the job. he may have turned down any further talks, but he was never offered a job

No reason?? He hopped on a plane to go to henry for an interview...hardly the actions of the man that wanted to stay at the club...all the while, whelan was doing his utmost to get his compensation.
in exactly the same way that moyes claimed he "would have" signed a contract at everton, martinez needed to do something to save face.

they quite clearly told wigan that he was being interviewed as part of a group of potential candidates. no offer was made to him.
the bottom of the article tells you everything about the motivation from whelan as he goes into the compensation amount and that he hopes liverpool will honour it....obviously the actions of someone wanting to keep their manager
