Oh and glad Monty is not in there.. Don't rate him.. Only bowls well with another spinner in the team. Otherwise he doesn't do it..And a strike rate of 75 aint good enough.
I think they'll stick with Finn over Bresnan.
Either way I can't see them doing anything other than having 4 out and out bowlers. No need for 5 at the moment (if they did I'd go for another seamer).
Root deserves to bat higher, but equally Compton batted well in NZ, Cook and Trott are invaluable and Bell is apparently irreplaceable, regardless of form.
Root to open. Ridiculous to have a guy who is close to 1000 runs before the end of May languishing at number 5.If Tremlett is fit you also have to consider him
Can't see bresnan playing over Finn. If he does play over Finn it's sends out the wrong message to NZ and later on Aus.
Root should not and will not open. Root is the future sure we can all see that but what ha Compton done to loose his role as opener, nothing. He did a great job in the difficult conditions in India and did ok in NZ where no one really stood out. Compton averages 40 in tests, and deserves to stay as opener. Roots chance will come but you can't move others around who are doing well just to accommodate one player.
"Roots chance will come but you can't move others around who are doing well just to accommodate one player..."
Why not? Australia did and had success for years. If you intend on being at the top you have to be ruthless. Geoff Boycott got dropped after scoring 246 in a test match! Roots the man in form. You don't win anything simply by being loyal.
Boycott was indeed dropped after scoring 246, against India. However he was not dropped to make way for anyone else or to allow some one else to move up the order. He was dropped because of what was widely described as his selfish batting, not for the first time. On the first day he scored only 106 runs and set out to bat out the day. He fell out with Close because of this so was dropped for those two reasons.
It's nothing to do with being loyal to Compton, its keeping a man in his position when he's doing well, loyalty doesn't come in to it. Also just a couple of months ago Compton scored two hundreds against NZ where as Root didn't pass 50. I can't see anything other than root at 5. However Compton is under huge pressure to score heavily or he will make way.
It doesnt matter who England put out.
NZ are going to get thrashed either way.
As a Yorkshire fan - it will be a waste to see Bresnan with England squad & then not play when we (Yorkshire) could really do with him for a very tough match vs Somerset at Taunton.
I meant Warwickshire at Edgbaston (NOT Somerset at Taunton)
Got the fixture list muddled up.
Bizarre that everyone is suggesting Finn or Bresnan.
Sury its Broad or Bresnan and to be honest I am surprised Bresnan got the call ahead of Onions.
Root, in this squad should bat 4, with Bairstow 6.
However, if I was a selector, Compton would be back up - I know that is harsh.
But, Root would open with Cook. Crackers to not play him there in the right squad. Trott, KP, Bell then Bairstow or Taylor.
"It's nothing to do with being loyal to Compton, its keeping a man in his position when he's doing well.."
Ah, ok....they sound exactly like the same thing Bearded but never mind that. I used the analogy of Boycott because it proves your never invulnerable to being dropped. Did Compton do well against NZ? Yes I suppose he did but you pick horses for courses. It would be - as i have said a number of times - a waste to bat Root at either 5 or 6 when in the form of his life. I hope the selectors don't do it because it will only add uncertainty to his future role. Compton looks uneasy as opener and I think would fit in lower down the order. however i do think unfortunately because the selectors lack imagination Root WILL play lower down the order.
They might sound the same thing but they're not. Picking guys when out of form, maybe Bell and Broad for example, is showing loyalty however picking a guy who's scored two hundreds in his last three tests is picking them because they deserve it.
Wish the weather forecast wasn't so dire.Who ever wins the toss will have to bowl first.. Nz will bowl first anyway.. even if there was 5 day full days. If England win the toss and bat first.. Just shows the lack of thinking on their behalf
The strange thing is Compton is a number 3, who is opening.
Root is an opener who they bat at six.
If England win the toss and bat first.. Just shows the lack of thinking on their behalf
.............
Bit of an idiotic comment considering no one has seen the state of the wicket yet.
Doesn't matter what the wicket is like. If you want to win you bowl first.. stands to reason.. You need to bat once.. The weekend forecast is horrendous. England need to bowl the Kiwis out in less than 3 sessions. Newzealand will bowl first.. no matter because they know they have less of a chance of losing that way.

Wish Michael Vaughan would shut his gob. On about Root and Bairstow..Untill they actually get a fair amount of international runs. Both are in the low 30's average so far.

NO, just I have preferances in MY THREAD. and you are not one of them.
Whatever, you big girl.
Bit of advice though, next time you do a thread about cricket, learn about the game first.
Just watched the Weather forecast for Lords over the next 5 days, Sunday looks the worst , most other days look overcast ( perfect for Jimmy to reach 300 ), however will there be lots of going off for bad light ?
