I think you have to take into account inflation since you bought your kit as a child. In real terms it may be less of an increase than you think. Inflation increase prices relative to wage increases.

I do not buy kits anymore, just by your nephew a Utd branded shirt or something. It will stay in fashion longer than the kit
Or buy him a kit from a few years ago, or from before he was born, go retro, it'll last longer since you don't need to update it.
Though I guess children don't appreciate classics.
