Evra to Monaco ??

At this moment in time.....I think Baines is the better player of the two. But's that's laregly down to Evra coming towards the end of his career. Evra from 3 seasons ago was a beast.

If it happened, I'd wish him well. Love paddy and love him even more for sticking it to Suarez in the return match.

It would seem Monaco are now taking a few of our players.

Apparently Nani and Anderson are on their way.

As for the OP, Baines is the best left back in the league. If Evra wanted to go then Baines would be a great replacement.

Stretford, we must also consider what Baines brings in an attacking sense. His corners and free kicks are up there with the best.

Not just free kicks. he gets forward brilliantly (like the Evra of 2007-2009) and links up well with the left winger. He has done this well particularly with Ashley Young for England.

I'd be sad to see Paddy leave though. However he's been here quite a while now and he is on slope as it were.

Last chance really to get any kind of money for him. He might fancy the idea of returning to Monaco and becoming captain and retiring there. Good luck to him I'd say.

So you guys are with me in thinking this would be a great move for all involved.

Even Everton who would get 15 million or more for Baines.

i dont think Baines is that good.

his defending at times is very suspect as seen midweek for England.

and his cheeks are always feckin red!

Evra's defending at times is worse than "suspect" mate. It's the same for most attacking full backs. Rafael has his moments too.

posted on 5/6/13

I also don't think Baine's that good. Offensively, Baines is arguably the most offensive fullback in world football( tied with Lahm) but defensively i have my suspicions.

We can sell Evra and get Luke Shaw or Lucas Digne from Lille (who Martin Ferguson, SAF's chief scout suggested we sign). He is 19 and was sensational in Ligue 1 and better than Buttner.

Hasn't Baines been Everton's POTY three seasons running now? I'm sure he has you know. You don't get that by being dodgy in defence.

And their defensive record is consistently very impressive too season after season.

Sorry guys, but Baines is a top player I think. He's been the best left back in the PL for the last 18-24 months and I include Cole, Evra and Clichy in that as well.

The reason Baines' defending may have been suspect is because he was playing with an injury! He had to come off for Cole in the first half.

S_Ender, no where have i said Baines is not a top player.

Danny Alves was the best FB in Europe for about five consecutive seasons - creating chances more than playmakers in top teams; making UEFA and FIFA's teams of the year - but i still had my suspicions about him in defence (largely proven right).

Plus, Baines is no spring chicken. He would have little sell-on value. Look at how young we got Evra.

I just feel we can do better overall: Luke Shaw has impressed (he is 17 and the potential to improve is frightening); Lucas Digne is 19 - a player our chief scout, Martin Ferguson, recommended for Sir Alex and put in a spectacular full season for Lille.

Both would be cheaper too and would give us more years. It is a no-brainer to me.

The problem with Luke Shaw is that he's dead set on going to Chelsea. Apparently he's a Chelsea fan and it's pretty much certain to happen.

Regardless of who we think might be better.

We all know, deep down, that it won't be Ronaldo, Bale or Fabregas that we will be signing this summer.......it's RARELY the case with United.

We'll be going after players of less calibre. Rightly or wrongly but that's the United way. We don't sign superstars very often, do we?

Baines, Fellaini & Strootman would be a good summer's business for me anyway. It would make our already strong squad even better. And I'd prefer to keep hold of Rooney as well if we can.

I agree Utd will make more modest signings.

But then again we did get RVP last summer so never know.

i disagree mate there, its not the utd way, its been Fergies way.

its like ive said before, if moyes has a 60 million a season transfer kitty, he may decide to try and sign one 60 million pound player or 2 30 million pound players, whereas fergie would mostly split it over 3 or 4 players.

time will tell

Very true. But if ever there was a time we need a "rare occasion" signing, it is now.

I think Moyes needs a BIG signing it would help him a lot.

Imagine the lift a massive name coming in would bring after all the sadness of Fergie retiring.

Its why I linger (pray) hopes of a Ronaldo return. But deep down I know it aint happening.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

It happend last summer. RVP.....and he won us the title back.

I'm living more in hope than expectancy over getting Ronnie back or somebody of that genuine world class ability like Bale or Fabregas for example.

Deep down I know it won't happen.

Although it could be for the better. We already have a great squad with only a few gaps that need plugging. Midfield being the main one obviously.

Two international midfielders, Like Fellaini and Strootman would improve our squad A LOT.

Baines would only come in I reckon if Paddy does choose to leave which I think he might because Monaco will offer him mega money I'd imagine for his "retirement" package.

posted on 5/6/13

I'd rather keep Evra - a popular and respected figure in the dressing room and still good enough on the pitch - for a couple more seasons and give Fabio or another youngster time to grow into the role long term. Baines would be a fairly short-term replacement.

posted on 5/6/13

Far too many people are up Evra's backside mainly because he is a character.

Th fact is he is clearly past it. He had 2 awful seasons after the world cup and although he improved a bit (not buy much) he is still nowhere good enough as he was in 06-10.

He is easily the biggest liability in our defense and facks up in nearly every big game. His concentration levels are gone and he doesn't seem to track back at all to defend.

I cringe when people think we should keep Evra because he is a dressing room character. So what? He has been a poor defender for 3 years now. If Monaco are offering us 10m then there should be no question to keep or sell him.

Don't forget we have Fabio who has clearly shown he has the ability. The only doubt was about his fitness and I think he'l overcome like his brother did.

If a good offer comes get rid of Evra. God knows how Fergie made him a captain.

posted on 5/6/13

Only problem with playing Fabio at LB is that he is right footed which certainly isn't ideal if United deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation as it relies on the fullbacks getting forward and supplying crosses and the last thing you want is a fullback who when he gets forward has to turn back onto his stronger foot all the time before he crosses the ball.

I like Baines and if Monaco are willing to pay £10m for Evra then it makes a lot of sense to bring in a tried and tested Premier league player and England international who is four years younger than Evra. Baines has been consistently excellent for years now and i always thinks it makes sense to sign players who are hungry to test themselves at a bigger club and hungry to win trophies. Baines is in that category.
