Hearns was favorite for that fight. A big light-middle, vs a former lightweight.
Hearns arguably one of the biggest punchers of all time at that weight class. Huge reach and height advantage, great jab.
Duran had just come off a loss to Hagler as well.
Sluggers beat swarmers
Sorry D4 but there's more than a bit of revisionist history going on there. Your points about Hearns jab/power are correct but the Duran fight was one of the fights that made Hearns name. Remember Hearns hadn't fought Hagler at that point.
When Hearns fought Duran, Duran was the big favourite to win.
Demspey beating Willard.
Ali beating Foreman
Marquez KOing Pacquiao
Pacquiao beating Del la Hoya
Sorry you are wrong, Hearns was a 2/1 favorite

Hearns was already a two weight world champion, was beating Leonard till he got KOed and was a known fearsome puncher.
He had great wins over the likes of Cuevas and Benitez, Benitez who just had a win over Duran as well.
Dempsey beating Willard's a cracker actually. One of the all time great upsets.
Pacman/de la hoya's another. I can remember banging on to my mate (who doesn't really follow boxing) about how this fight's a freak show and it embarrasses boxing because DLH will obviously win etc etc.
Show's what I know!
Del la Hoya was drained to feck, not sure that was a big upset.
I guess i can say that in hindsight, but yes it was upset
I wouldn't class boxrec as an accurate source of bookies odds from the 80's but surely you agree the way Hearns stopped Duran was a major upset?
That's the point May, our views now are in hindsight!
I admit the manner of Hearns victory was shocking, because no had ever done that to Manos de Piedra before, but what a punch, 99.9999% of boxers would have been out cold.
I was a bit too young at the time to follow it, so I can't appreciate as much because you have hindsight.
Hearns's style was all wrong for Duran.
i'd say froch bute was a upset as the media really wrote carl off
May (U16980)
Oscar was a heavy favorite, 3/1-4/1 on
People were calling it a mismatch and that Pacquiao could get seriously hurt.
68/1 for the round 8 stoppage by the way.
Pretty sure that counts as an upset
and the manner of the victory just made it a bigger one
I thought Froch would win that one, a lot of people were picking Bute but quite a few thought he was overrated and not tested at the highest level and his chin was always suspect.
Yeah i though Froch would too because of the level of opposition he constantly faced, i didn't expect that sort of knockout though, amazing win.
Disagree with Duran being stopped due to one punch D4. It was just complete domination from start to finish.
Great win, Froch was a beast that night.
Watch the Bute vs Andrade fight, Bute should have been KOed in that if not for a corrupt ref, stopped a few times in the amateur, Triple G stopped in some tournament.
Hearn's was throwing bombs and had Duran on the back foot, just trying to survive, but the punch that finished it was a monster.
If Duran somehow made to round 3, he could have turned the tide.
Hearns tried the same tactic with Hagler, and we all know what happened there.
Don't agree, Hearns was too aggressive in the Hagler fight. It was a tear up and Hearns couldn't cope with that.
He wasn't using the same tactic in the Duran fight though. Hearns was completely in control and only aggressive when he knew he could be without much risk. He waited until he could finish it and did.

I've seen both fights D4. I stand by my point though. Hearns was not even close to being in control in the Hagler fight. It's mayhem.
However, he has Duran under control. He takes a few shots but generally you can see Hearns is landing more shots and just biding his time before he stops Duran.
I think, I mean more about going for the early KO. After the first minute of the Duran fight, once Duran had been down, Hearns was throwing bombs.
The first round and a bit Hearn was doing the same thing against Hagler, the difference was Hagler took those shots and game back with his and took the fight to Hearns.
Duran never looked comfortable.
I'm not sure how you can compare the two fights in any way to be honest.
Hearns wasn't going for an early KO against Duran, he was controlling him by boxing and going for a stoppage ifvpossible.
Hearns was just trying to survive in the Hagler fight and he chose to do that by going toe toe rather than trying to box.
Very different approaches in each fight.
D4 thought Pacquaio would beat Hearns.
I sure I remember you saying that.
