My mistake. I was thinking Jara was from Villa, but that was Lichaj.
You're right, both Sammon and Martin were deemed not good enough by their respective clubs in the Premiership, same as Jara and Lichaj. I didn't say that makes them rubbish by the way, it's just a simple statement of fact.

Dunne is towards the end of his career and no longer quick or sharp enough at the highest level. I think he'll be excellent in the Championship, if fit. Your pair aren't comparable and have been released because their clubs do not rate them highly enough to keep them. The Comedy Chilean is at the age where he should be at his peak, but has been deemed not good enough for a relegation-fighting Premiership side. Smith is a different proposition where his club thinks he is potentially a top-flight player. Obviously at his age the lack of experience is the thing rather than the lack of talent.
Yeah that's what held Owen and Rooney back isn't it?
If you're good enough, you're old enough as the saying goes. So however you want to dress it up both of us have defenders not good enough for the PL but one with PL experience and wanted by teams in La Liga, the other played for Millwall

A bit yawn, but anyway: if you're talking about Jara and his "Premiership experience", he had a few games for the Baggies a couple of seasons ago. They didn't think he was up to it and loaned him out to the Championship, Brighton and then Forest last year. Maybe his limitations will be less exposed at this level. And if not, you have Eric in reserve. Loanees are a different kettle of fish: the old adage: "if you're good enough, you're old enough" means much less than in Brian Clough's day: players need to learn their trade a bit more these days, maybe strikers occasionally being an exception as in the cases you state. I have no idea whether Smith, if he signs, will do well for Derby, but at least Spurs appear to think he is a player they want to keep and not get rid of. I hope they are a decent judge of a player, in the same way that you hope that Villa and West Brom are not.
