If we don't make any signings, we can kiss our PL trophy goodbye and forget about th CL. It's as simple as that
Spurs' Achilles heel is their mentality.
I expect them to get into a position to finish above Arsenal again and then just bottle it.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Mentality means nothing if there are a ton of new players at Spurs. How would the likes of Paulinho, Soldado and any other new signings have to be tarred with a brush that affected players from 2 years ago?
Spurs' biggest problem is a strength in depth. This past season they would have gotten 4th place had Bale not gotten injured in the run in (and they had a reserve winger of note). Not because of some mystical mentality!
we will be looking at 60 + games next season.
all of them will get plenty of game time.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
We only played like 52 games last season. And yes, there would be rotation but I doubt Anderson would ever get picked for any other games that didn't have 'Norwich H' and 'Cardiff A' in their title
Rooney, Young, Valencia, Nani, Kagawa, Welbeck, Ando, Cleverley, Jones, Smalling, Buttner, Vidic
,,,,,,,,,,,,,
only rooney and kagawa have potential to be much better.
----------------------------------------
Even if you, almost inexplicably, cannot see that these players have the potential to play better.... Then at least you can work out that they can play MORE.
I'd expect United to be at least as good as last season, but Chelsea and City will definitely be better.
If our wingers can get it together this season we'll be fine. Winning it last season by such a margin with the wings barely contributing anything was a bit of a fluke.
Rob, it's in Spurs football club.
People talk about the winning mentality and atmosphere at United - Spurs have a nervous bottlers mentality running through their club as well.
You only have to speak to Spurs fans that aren't deluded to know that they are always nervous about their club ever achieving what they should.
They are convinced they are cursed as they have a habit of making a pig's ear of things.
That is something that is very hard to shake off.
The mentality between Arsenal and Spurs is one of the biggest factors in why Arsenal always finish above them. You may not believe that but I certainly do.

You can definitely sense it with their crowd towards the end of the season. Poor passes are met with moans and groans, the crowd get all panicky if they go a goal down. Must get to the players. Arsenal aren't much better for it but they are better.
Robb,
oh dear, i was out by 8 games
now also work out where we came in each competiton, and work out the games we missed out on and it will be 60 plus
lets not also forget Carrick is 32 now, its only a matter of time before his age catches up with him in terms of his performances.
The mentality between Arsenal and Spurs is one of the biggest factors in why Arsenal always finish above them. You may not believe that but I certainly do.
This is spot on, and it's why I said Spurs are bottlers. They invented the word.

Hippo talking rubbish again I see.
the only players you named who have played consistently better than they did last season are kagawa and rooney. everybody else might have had one good season here or there (like valencia or nani) but you are deluding yourself if you think these players will all suddenly be much better this season for no reason at all.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Of all the players Ji mentioned all of them could play better than last season where we won the title.
Even if half of them play better than we have a better existing squad. Not one of our wingers played well last year. Imagine if one or two of them do?
How many of the players Ji listed had a season they could call 'at the top of their game' last year?
None of them. But the possibility remains that they'll push on with a new manager there to impress.

Of course but it won't be this season. You would have seen signs of it last season if a decline was happening. Right now Carrick is playing at his peak which suggests he has at least this and next season (14/15) before he starts a decline that requires a replacement.
i think this mentality stuff is usually nonsense. city had a losing mentality until they won the league. bayern had a bottlers mentality in europe until they won the cl. spain had a losers mentality until they won the euros and they haven't looked back.
------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree with Hippo!
Nah Bale is off, whenveer you get into business with Madrid you end up losing out. I think the move should happen in the next few weeks, it's a shame the league will be losing a talented player but Spurs will be more vulnerable and easier to beat now.

Of course mentality is important. It's been one of the things that has been so good about United.
Of course bottlers can overcome that, but it's still important.
I only have to direct you to England and penalty shootouts.

How can a United fan not believe in a winning mentality?
what`? what are you on about.
-------------------------------
Is it that hard?
I'm saying that, even if they continue to play at the level they do, be that inconsistent or "average"..... If they can play more games than they did, last season.... We will still see an overall improvement to the squad.
But, any sensible, non "must sign world class players only" fan would know that any of the younger players, Welbeck, Smalling, Fabio, Jones etc have the potential to have that breakthrough season that we have seen time and again. Even the older players like Clevs, Ando and, dare i say, Young... Could truly shine with a properly uninterrupted, injury free season.
Hippo, you used to say Valencia was the best winger in the world and now you are saying he's only had a good season here or there. Stop talking crap.
Darren
But the penalty shoot out thing has gone on for 30 years and is a long established choke.
But Spurs have only 'choked' in the past 2 seasons.
11/12 - Because of Harry's court case
12/13 - Because of Bale's injury.
This season they have a better manager and also have already started buying players and will continue buying players when Bale goes. They will have much better strength in depth.
How can a United fan not believe in a winning mentality?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I personally believe in a winning mentality but I don't think too much should be thought of regarding a losing mentality.
Especially when there are very good reasons for the past 2 seasons of 'chokes'.
