thats funny because i remember giggs winning SPOTY then being shít the following season.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
How old was Giggs then?
That's true, Rob. Spurs have a habit of bottling in general though.
I'm not saying that they can't finish above Arsenal but I do think this plays on the minds of everyone at the club.
I think Arsenal will finish 4th again, but Spurs should push them close.
Interesting that you've been tipping Arsenal to improve and fight for the title but then think Spurs will finish above them.
Not like you to be inconsistent to make a point.
And was Giggs at his peak that year?

does it matter how old he was?
his performance dipped massively.
lets not kid oursleves, giggs is a freak of nature in regards to his fitness.
carrick will be long done beofre he is anywhere near Giggs's age.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
That was based on my strong belief that Arsenal would invest heavily this summer. So far my 'faith' in them has been misplaced.
But to be fair, did I or did I not say a few weeks ago that there would be a few teams challenging for the title and that 75 points (or close to it) might win the league?

You said he was the best winger in the world. When he wasn't, and now saying he can't improve on last season which was probably one of the worst performances from a United winger I've seen since Jordi Cruyff.
There is room for improvement for many of the players in our squad. Doesn't mean they all will. But it's not delusion to expect better performances from Nani, Welbeck, Valencia and Young - all of which were terrible last season.

Robb,
I can recall Spurs bottling it a few times in the 80s, despite it being a pretty successful time for them on the whole. Recall us scoring a last minute equaliser in the League Cup final and winning it in extra time, in the year when they were going for 4 trophies I think. Ends up with none and they blew up in the title race once or twice as well.
They seem to have recently picked up where they left off. A long-standing trait if you will. Flimsy at the crunch.
I was convinced they'd pip Arsenal last season. So not sure what too think now, probably Arsenal against the odds again.
Regarding Utd, I still expect you to compete and it might be a good thing for Moyes that you go into the season, as it stands as third favourites. You're not expected to regain it, a solid challenge would be deemed acceptable, wouldn't it?
does it matter how old he was?
---------------------------------------------------------
It matters a lot! Carrick is playing at his peak and has been steadily very good for a while now. His style of play isn't dependent on pace or physicality so he could carry on doing what he's doing for a good few years.
Giggs had a better than usual season that year and most people feel he got a sympathy vote. There was no sympathy in the votes for Carrick last year.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Absolutely. As long as we compete i'm happy.

-------
of course it doesnt matter, people's performances drop at different ages.
the fact is giggs had a very good season, then flopped the following.
there is nothing to say the same wont happen to carrick.
havent read all the posts so dont know if its been said
but maybe UTD keeping the same squad may benefit them in the long term this season?
I thought moyes being the better choice for manager was to keep consistency which managers like mourinho dont generally do. Thye like to splash the cash and change things which takes time
although I think that is city more than chelsea so far
on paper city are strongest imo but they will need to gel
one problem UTd dont have is the gelling of players
there is nothing to say the same wont happen to carrick.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anything can happen in football but what gives you any impression that it will suddenly happen to Carrick?
His game and role in the side is very simple. I can't see what will happen to him to make him a liability to us.

i'd say as he gets older the liklihood increases, its not rocket science.
at some point soon his performances will dip.
he doesnt have any fecking pace as it is, and that will only get slower
Obviously he'll get 'worse' the older he gets but it will be a gradual thing and very noticeable.
We won't be playing Cardiff later this year and suddenly Carrick will be pushing his zimmerframe up the pitch to try and intercept a pass from Bellamy.
one problem UTd dont have is the gelling of players
---
You sure about that? The players looked like they'd never played together in their life at times last season.
and very noticeable
---
thats my concern
This mentality thing is nothing but an overused term. The biggest teams mostly win so its perceived that they have a winning mentality. Smaller teams lose more so have a losing mentality. Arsenal are a bigger club than Spurs.
Nothing to do with "mentality" and stuff.
Oh and the season why Spurs finished 5th was because they had their best defender out for the season and Sandro their best CM for the last 3 months.
Now I can't remember either Arsenal or CFC player having a season ending injury. Also Bale was injured for a crucial two weeks or so. Mentality is just an excuse. Liverpool had a winning mentality in the 70/80's. Now what has happened to them?
If we sign a new CM then Anderson will barely play any big games unless there's an injury.
----------
why, is powell ready to step up
lets not kid ourselves, we need a new midfielder as we only have 3 natural cm at the club now ( 4 if you include possibly fletcher)

True but I think the point is that we are not signing a young CM as backup for Ando. We are trying to sign a first choice CM to partner Carrick which means that Clev and Ando will be backup players and Ando looks like being fourth choice. Not an ideal platform for him to "turn the corner" imo. And being fourth choice (if he is that) as a 25 year old isn't a great vote of confidence from Moyes. Thiago wouldn't accept that role at Barca at the age of 22, never mind 25. And he was being kept out of the side by much older players - not players younger or the same age as him.
