The first quarter-final match threw up an intriguing encounter between Tyke and his Genoa against champ Junior and his Palermo. In what was a tight first-half with each player having chances, Junior took the lead in the first half and started to assert himself more in the second half, Tyke’s defence held well with a beauty of a goal line clearance, whilst the same couldn’t be said for his attacking which was hopeless. However just when it looked like Junior would be in the semi-finals, Tyke’s attack came good and a goal in the 93rd min resulted in the tie going to golden goal. Clearly buoyed by that late goal it took Tyke only 4 mins to get the golden goal and end Junior’s second title reign. Perhaps it was cruel on Junior, but it just goes to show how fine the margins are decided in these tournaments. Thanks for a good game Junior, that golden goal was for beating me in the SPL Tournament final!
Another intriguing game saw favourite Sideshow up against SpursBoy with Lazio facing Atlanta. SpursBoy showed it pays to do your homework on your respective opponent as he tightened up his defence and took his chances to frustrate Sideshow in a 2 – 0 victory which saw the tournament wide open and the favourite out. SpursBoy showing some true SpursBoy form here, whilst Sideshow exits in another hard pill to swallow manner.
The third quarter-final between RVPM and TopLad proved to be the most enthralling of them all. In a game played in snow, RVPM took the lead in his first knock-out match, only for TopLad to take control of the match hitting him with not one, but two goals. However RVPM wouldn’t be denied his day and got himself back in the game to even the score and avoid golden goal by scoring a late winner to book himself a semi-final place with Udinese and dump TopLad and his AS Roma out of the competition.
The last quarter-final saw Kent face off against Bubbles Sampdoria who were the lowest rated team in the tournament. From what I could ascertain Kent dominated this game and the final score of 1 – 0 to Kent did flatter Bubbles somewhat. So Kent with an invigorated passion was through to the semi-finals, whilst Bubbles exited in the quarter-finals for the second time in succession.
The first semi-final saw Tyke against SpursBoy with Tyke having registered his first ever victory against SpursBoy last tournament this could prove to be close. The match started with Tyke edging it and then taking the lead on the half hour mark. This fired SpursBoy up who equalized from a corner and showed some excellent clinical skills to score a further two goals to go into half-time 3 – 1 up. He would then score as the second half began with Tyke not taking long to reply. The chances and possession fell to Tyke after this, but SpursBoy soaked it up and won the match 4 – 2 to secure a place in the final and the chance of a fourth title. Tyke did well enough in this tournament and can consider himself unlucky to play a player in such devastating form.
The next semi-final saw RVPM against Kent in what should’ve been a close match with Kent slight favourite in my opinion. Kent started off the match bright enough with the post denying him the opening goal; this would be as good as it got for him. RVPM displaying he can compete with the best of them by tearing Kent to pieces on the counter and racking up four goals to show for it, leaving Kent shell-shocked in an ultra-impressive 4 – 0 victory and a place in the final to go with it. Kent did well to get this far, considering he only won two matches!
So the final saw seasoned contender SpursBoy against RVPM who not many would’ve expected to get this far. In a thoroughly even contested final, SpursBoy proved once again he was adapt at set-pieces scoring a corner to put himself in front, RVPM wasn’t just going to roll over and he started to boss the match, but just couldn’t put his chances away and SpursBoy as he often does made him pay with a penalty in the last minute of the match to win 2 - 0. RVPM proving what I always say that anything can happen once you get in those knock-outs and he had a brilliant run to the final of which I’m sure he is proud. The winner though picks up his first title since November and takes his total to an unmatched four. It’s hard to deny him this title as he won every single match and finally hit his top form which is very, very tough to compete with! Congratulations four time champion and ranked number one player SpursBoy.
The Official Tournaments are taking a break for now, but fear not as the spin-off tournament is back and the theme is ‘British Summer’ so hopefully I’ll see you on the 25th August for that one where a certain Voom will be back too. The rankings will be updated this week.
