Commentry just covered Wilding and Ball. Wilding is a youth midfielder and Ball is a striker

The Shrews have only had 3 shots on target and got all 3.

Naylor off and Keegan on. Interesting substitution!

Centre Forward off for a midfielder as well - Is Brown in Cotton Woll for the weekend? - Thought he might have given the youth team striker a run

posted on 9/8/11

Brown kinda pulled up while running for a long ball. Looked like he may have tweaked something

SoD to write a book " How tpo get injured without really trying", should be a best seller.

My Gawd, I do not really want to hear the Mason problem - hopefully it will be minor. My only look at the games is Rovers Player, why was neither the Sharp nor Hayter injury tackles on Player?

Brilliant team performance from the starting eleven and the three subs. Apart from a few defensive wobbles early on we never looked in any danger. Oster was playing a Franz Beckenbauer role in front of the back four while Mason did the advance probing with Bennett increasingly coming into the game from the left wing. The two goals from Mason and Bennett were of the highest quality which made the sickening tackle from behind leading to Mason's stretchering off such a downer. I can't see any Championship side giving us as much room to play as Tranmere did but it was good to see. I hope Mason isn't too badly crocked and that Naylor is fit to play against West Ham.

There's the match report. It needs a bit of tidying up which I'll do tomorrow (its getting late here and I'm up at 5!)

Night night!

What pleased me was,
3 goals,
clean sheet,
more attacking options of play than last season,
What annoyed me was,
When are refs going to punish tackles from the rear, they are red cards not yellow!
Brilliant performance tonight.
Sean have a word before the game with the Ref.
Technically we are too good for the opposition hence the frustration of defenders and the bad, very bad tackles injuring our players. The Ref must give them the right and proper protection.

O'Driscoll had a right go at the Tranmere manager tonight after Mason was stretchered off and they were still flying in with dirty tackles - totally unnecessary injury as they were never going to score 3 goals at that point to take it to extra time let alone 4 to win!. The Tranmere manager just shrugged and held his hands out as if to say 'i can't stop them'

Apart from the obvious injury, it was a great match and the best value £7 I've spent in a long time. Yes there's still work to do but the defence looked solid and Friend is doing a good job as captain (never imagined he could shout like he was doing tonight) Bennett, although he misplaced a few passes, was iimpressive, his pace gave the Tranmere defence loads of trouble

I don't buy into the whole "its SOD's fault our players get injured" He has got us starting to play that passing, fluid football that we were known for up until about Christmas last year. The downside to this is teams that cannot cope with this will try to kick us off the park.

But it felt good to see them win at home at last

Totally agree Alex, its not much consolation when one of your better players goes off after another shocking tackle whether the card is red or yellow but it might make the opposition thiink twice before making such tackles if they know they'll be sent off

The worst thing for me is if we didnt have these injuries, with the signings we have made I do believe we could have competed a lot more easily this season (ok nothing's easy but you know what I mean)

Well, you all know what I think about the theory of manager's tactics getting players injured by now.

What peed me off about losing Mason and Sharp for that matter was the way both tackles were unnecessary. In Sharp's case he was miles away from goal and facing away; Mason's was a case of a tie that was already lost for Tranmere.

To be honest, I'm not sure what refs can do. about it. They ref the games as they see them, and like players, differ in standards (from day-to-day as well as between themselves). I can't comment on yesterday's tackle on Mason but thought the Dunk/Sharp tackle merited the yellow it received. The commentators yesterday remarked that they didn't think Welsh's tackle on Mason looked as bad as the one on Sharp.

What does have to happen is the authorities have to start using post-match video evidence to disuede played from bad tackles. They could review the tape and award further disciplinary points. Most of the videos have the benefit of slo-mo so the reviewing official can look at other aspects like was it possible to get the ball? was the tackler in control? Did the player on the receiving end make more of it?

On Saturdays game, were they to do this, Lua-Lua would have his disciplinary point for a yellow rescinded (he didn't dive); Dunk would be upgraded from 1 to 2 as would Naylor. A very nasty tackle on Friend, which I believe went unpunished would also get 2 points.

Justice would be done. Dirty players would find themselves banned more often.

What you need in football is the same as you do in rugby.. Very strong no nonsence refs (ie Jack Taylor in football) Fred Lindop and me. Get the captains together at the beggining and tell them who is boss and what is what and they tell team orior to k o. THEN STICK TO IT. In a County match at rugby league I sent a player off in first minute for a deliberate trip. (In rugby league the hands have to be on the player before you could use your leg to effect a tackle). By the way after the initial disaproval and comments "But it is a County Match" my reply "He should have thought about that before he did it" Simple banter between player and ref as on a football pitch. Not being god but ensures who and what you as a ref will stand for. Prior to one of the last games at Belle Vue I was talking to the ref and linesmen as they warmed up and discussed the difference in rugby and football. All three stated that they wished they had the power as rugby refs.. His name was Mr Trevor Kettle

Fuzzy I would like to take issue with your opinion on the Dunk tackle.

How can you say Dunc’s tackle was a yellow, I had good vision of it on Saturday and Dunk had two feet off the ground, a jump tackle and coming from the back of Sharp. He never touched the ball only making contact with Sharp and it is, therefore, a red card.
I refereed off and on for 20 years and can defend a ref normally because you cannot see every tackle with players getting in the way but on that occasion he was not more than 15 feet away with clear vision. He got it wrong
I wasn’t at the game last night and therefore cannot give my opinion on the Mason tackle.

What can Refs do?

Well it goes without saying they have a duty of care to stop such out and out dangerous tackles. He should hammer that home with the players before the game starts.

What can Donny do about it?

Well what about Sean doing the Ferguson gamesmanship bit and give the ref ear ache before the game starts. It’s out of character for Sean I know but our talented players need the correct protection.

3 players stretched off in two games if it carries on NY and Bally will be playing by Christmas and we can’t have that.

I like the idea of reviewing incidents later by video and then giving a greater of lesser punishment. I would also like to see a club being able appeal against yellow cards. Food for thought!

I see Lewis Dunk got booked in the game against Gillingham. Says it all doesn't it?

I will play against Dunk any day of the week even now. he would not last 90 mins. but I would get the early bath ha ha all to myself. There are always ways my friends, perhaps you should read MY version of SIMPLES, Been sent off twice at football and only twice at rugby, (both occasions the games were abandonded for brawls ) but of course I was not on the pitch by then. Not dirty, just hard and sometimes clever as well as lucky. Just like Dunk and the defender last night eh.
