United need one world class player to be an exceptional team.
-----------------------
False. We need a top class left back, top class left winger & at least 2 top class central players to be an exceptional (ours in 07-08, Barcelona, Munich in relent time) team.

Artur

Had Nani not been wrongly sent off we may very well have made it at least to the semi finals.

In an ideal world I would love to have an actual left winger, who that is I don't really know. That would then allow Kagawa to play centrally who although still has much to prove is a brilliant player IF used properly.

If we ended up with Baines I'd be happy though, he's a great player with a good attitude and it would give us an extra dimension on the left where he could combine with Kagawa.

For me the player I would love to see and who I think would really improve us is Modric. Answering KM's hypothetical question, yes I probably would, those 2 would be brilliant for us and allow Kagawa to work centrally.

We were world class in 07-08? I dont think so... we have a great defence and attack, but our midfield was still a liability, covered up by Ronaldos goals. We were fortunate to win the champions league that year... stands out teams in recent years have been Bayern and Barcelona.

The midfield was not a liability, he said 'exceptional' and I would agree with that, the team in 2008 had quality all the way through. The best CB pairing in the world, the best LB in the world, one of the best GK in the world, Scholes, Hargreaves and Carrick in the middle all very good players, and an attack of Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney.

Yes. Either way we were far better in 07-08 then we are now. I don't even think we are better than Atletico Madrids etc these days.
Plus we are about to lord our marquee player for 2 midtable team players.
Plus we played far better football back then than we do now & a player here and there won't change much.

Midfield a liability in 2008? You must be joking?! Carrick, Hargreaves, a still working Scholes, a fit Fletcher and Anderson who was good in his first season.

Agreed. I rate Fellaini and I think he and Carrick will form a pretty tasty base for the front 4 to work off but ideally (even more than Fabregas) i'd have Modric and Carrick together.

Modric is so good with the ball under pressure and is also a very good passer and mover too.

It baffles me when people don't rate him. It really does.

Not a lot of people usually agree, but I've always thought that Paul Scholes was at his best from 2006-08.

I know what you mean. I felt that when he came back from his eye 'injury' he was a very fresh and driven player.

Scholes and Carrick were nothing special, Hargreaves was hardworking, but wouldn't call any of them world class... I remember numerous games where our midfield was overrun but Ronaldo would bag us a winner against run of play.

We don't need 1 player. We need at least 2-3 first team players to start challenging for Europe & play good football.

We tried and failed to sign Fabregas so who else is there? People keep naming the likes of Gundongan but it's cringe worthy how many times it has to be pointed out that he's simply not available.
----
Do you want a list?
Gustavo - Better player than Fellaini and only cost Wolfsburg £17m, only a few months difference in age.

Paulinho - Like Gustavo was available for £17m and we just ignored him.

Marchisio - Said this when linked to United: "You never know what will happen in football. I would not be the first player to leave his boyhood club." Would cost a similar amount to Fellaini. The amount of top class CM's Juve have would mean he would be available.

Kondogbia - Just 20 years old, quality last year, will only improve. Release clause thought to be around £14m.

Koke - Highly regarded at Athletico, would probably cost a fair bit but another top class young player.

Vidal - One of the best midfielders in the world, would probably take a massive bid for him.

Then there's other players like Morgan Schniederlin (sp?) who would be better options than Fellaini.

My point is, there's plenty of players out there who are well within our price range. All of them are quite feasible targets (bar probably Vidal).

This is true.

At least most of Robb's claims have some basis in reality...
