AVB- Easy
so if we get into the champions league next season and have to travel to Russia / Ukraine for a midweek game are we going to leave our first team squad at home ?
=================
I think we can all recognise the difference between the group fixtures in the EL compared to the CL....
I shall reserve judgement until we are out of the group stages. The effort put in now will mean we can travel 'weak' for the final matches. We complain the new signings don't have time to gel.
I would rather the travelled and trained than stay on London. international weeks are coming up so I don't see the problem.
We are at home this weekend. Less travel. If we were away then I may have a different view.
Tbf Youve got to remember that football games are the players workplace. Whether or not you are actually on the pitch, there are many things that can be learned just by being part of a squad on foreign soil.
Maybe travelling, watching or playing then flying back to the UK is a sort of jet lag training- getting the boys prepared for our CL away days next season!
I'm saying that players are at the peak of thier fitness right now, during December we have 8 games in 28 games with training every day, they're pros not second rate semi pro players
"The effort put in now will mean we can travel 'weak' for the final matches."
If AVB has any nous then that is the rationale for the travelling squad.

what on earth does this have to do with giving yourself the best chance to win the game v west ham on sunday. the FAR more important game?
it wouldn't matter if they were the fittest people in the world, or the least fit. you surely just give yourself the best chance you can to get the desirable outcome in BOTH games.
taking such a strong squad to Russia a few days before we play west ham is not doing that!.

This is what I was under the impression we're doing. win the group nice and early. Don't need to bother with last few games

Also, tbh I don't see west Ham as that much of a threat.
Carrol is injured and they've got nothing else up front.
They're also missing Downing & Cole.
"during December we have 8 games in 28 games with training every day"
The squad already have blocks of 7-8 games every 22 days til November. If Hull are beaten in the League Cup that pattern will extend up to the new year. In FA / League Cup 4th / SF rounds, and that extends til the end of January.
Nobody can say they didn't see what is potentially coming down the track.

they are not good. but so what? we need to make sure we get the job done!
Sorry Chronic
But if Spurs really want to be with the big boys, then they are going to have to play full strength teams if they are in the CL, so I don`t know what all the fuss is about jsut because AVB rightly is taking the Europa League seriously. I and I am sure our loyal travelling supporters do not want to see a bunch of YTS boys representing the club in any game thank you very much.

Genius
I don`t get what the modern supporter wants really. The players all get paid oddles of money to play football. I want to see as good as team out on the pitch representing Spurs in every game. Years ago it used to be the case, just because the squads are now massive, it gives managers an excuse to play weakened teams, and it usually backfires.
Frankly of the two fixtures, West Ham will be infinitely the easier of the two. And just to disregard Anzi because of their financial woes is being naive in the extreme. Any game in Russia is never a gimmee.

sorry.
but why are we talking about cl?
we are playing a Europa league group game against team at the bottom of the Russian league with no wins in 11.
dunno why everyone keeps banging on about CL when we are not in it. if we were to meet a shambles of a side in the CL then I would say the same thing. but we wont. so we would have to play a stronger team. horses for courses.
"Same could be said of Anzhi"
Same could be said of any opponent.
The squad concept still seems to be beyond some.
Just because the a listed match squad is strong on paper, does not mean the best XI in that squad will be the starting XI (or play at all) .
AVB is now also being judged on his ability to put the weakest possible sides to comfortably beat an opponent. He has the squad now to be able to try that for every game.
Frankly of the two fixtures, West Ham will be infinitely the easier of the two. And just to disregard Anzi because of their financial woes is being naive in the extreme. Any game in Russia is never a gimmee.

firstly. anzhi are bottom of the league. no wins in 11.
secondly, if they actually beat us, then it wouldn't actually mess us up at all as we would still almost certainly qualify from the group.
if we mess up v west ham it will hurt us much more.
its really quite simple. not sure what all the fuss is about. everyone is totally missing the point.

I understnd where youre coming from but 3 points:
1- AVB knows better than anyone in this country what it takes to win the Europa, he doesnt consider it to be second string and fair play to him. I dont think its a coincidence that because of his attitude other PL managers have decided to take this competition much more seriously.
2- Maybe Andre considers that taking a mixed squad rather than a so called 'B team' ensures that no players can take for granted that they are too valuable and that they are an automatic pick for any PL games. Concentrates their mind Im sure
3- There will be many more bruises picked up playing West Sham at the weekend than Anzhi this tonight!
Frankly of the two fixtures, West Ham will be infinitely the easier of the two.

bollox!
I think we're giving WHam too be credit.
We could play our first XI team, rest the entire squad and play our second team on Sunday and win both games comfortably.
WHAM are toilet and we should put them to the sword with ease
